PH lifts import ban on Dutch poultry products
In a statement on Friday, the DA Agriculture Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr. signed Memorandum Order 31 lifting the importation ban, 'following the World Organization for Animal Health declaration that the Netherlands is now free from avian influenza.'
Moreover, no new outbreaks have been reported by the European country since May 16, 2025.
The DA's import ban—which also covered poultry meat, day-old chicks, eggs, and semen—was imposed in December last year after Dutch veterinary authorities confirmed an outbreak of H5 (N untyped) Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) on November 17, 2024 in Putten, Gelderland, affecting domestic birds.
'Based on the evaluation of the Department of Agriculture, the risk of contamination from importing live poultry, poultry meat, day-old chicks, eggs, and semen is negligible,' Tiu Laurel said in his memorandum.
The DA said the order takes effect immediately and shall remain in force unless formally revoked, adding that 'all conflicting directives are considered rescinded.'
The Agriculture Department added that it was directed by President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. to diversify the country's meat and protein sources to safeguard food security amid rising global and domestic animal health threats. —Ted Cordero/ VAL, GMA Integrated News

DA issues temporary ban on import of cattle, buffalo from France and Italy
The Department of Agriculture (DA) on Sunday announced a temporary ban on the importation of live cattle and buffalo from France and Italy, following confirmed outbreaks of Lumpy Skin Disease (LSD), a highly contagious disease which causes fever and distinctive skin nodules in infected animals. The DA said the ban also covered products and byproducts, including embryos and semen, as provided for in Memorandum Orders 43 and 44 signed on August 1, 2025. The import bans exempt hides that have been salt-treated, or subjected to ante- and post-mortem, meal and flour from blood, meat other than skeletal muscle or bones; casings, gelatine and collagen, tallow, hooves and horns; and milk and milk products subjected to pasteurization. 'The import restriction will remain in effect until further notice, pending developments in containment and eradication efforts in the affected countries,' the advisory read. LSD is typically spread by blood-feeding insects such as flies, mosquitoes, and ticks. While it is rarely fatal, it can substantially reduce milk production, weight loss, and cause trade disruptions. The bans come as Italy reported an outbreak in Orani, Nuoro, Sardegna on July 18, as confirmed by the National Reference Centre for Exotic Animal Diseases. France reported an outbreak in Chambéry on June 23, as confirmed by the French veterinary office. Latest data from the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) show that Philippine production of cattle grew by 2.0% in the second quarter, while carabao fell by 2.9%. —KG, GMA Integrated News

DOST to focus on developing ASF vaccines
BAGUIO CITY — The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) is currently placing their focus on developing vaccines to combat African Swine Fever (ASF). During an interview at the Handa Pilipinas sa Bagong Pilipinas 2025 Luzon Leg on Thursday, DOST Secretary Renato Solidum Jr. said that the agency was still waiting for the bill on the proposed virology issued to be signed, but are currently looking into developing preventions for ASF. 'Even though we were still developing that bill in Congress and in the Senate, the lower house and the Senate in Congress, we have been funding virology and vaccine research projects… We're looking into ASF,' he said. 'The virology is not simply preparing for the next pandemic, but also to address current food security issues like African Swine Fever and plant diseases that are existing that are affecting our food production,' he added. Earlier, the DOST launched several rapid testing kits for ASF as part of their efforts to protect the Philippine swine industry. 'We showed the technology how to get DNA out of blood and how to analyze it faster. FL Liza Marcos vows help for Pinoy kids getting treatments in India hospital
First Lady Louise ''Liza'' Araneta-Marcos has vowed to provide support for Filipino children who are receiving treatments at the Apollo Hospital in India. The First Lady posted some photos of her visit at the hospital where she met children receiving life-saving treatments for serious conditions like biliary atresia, which the National Institutes of Health defines as a condition in infants in which the bile ducts outside and inside the liver are scarred and blocked. ''To every family I met today: please know that you will not be forgotten. We -- together with the driving forces behind Apollo hospital and the Philippine-India Chamber of Commerce — will do whatever we can to support you every step of the way," the First Lady said. She said the kids' parents made the painful decision to leave home and cross borders just to give their children a fighting chance as these treatments are still not widely available. ''What I witnessed was more than just medicine at work — it was the strength of a mother's love, the quiet courage of fathers, and the fierce will of children who simply want to live,'' she said. The First Lady joined President Ferdinand ''Bongbong'' Marcos Jr. in his five-day state visit to India. After New Delhi, Marcos and the delegation will proceed to Bengaluru.
