UAE: From rescue radar to life detector, Dubai Police showcase latest gadgets
Dubai Police displayed their latest rescue equipment and technology at the two-day World Crisis and Management Summit (WCEMS) in Abu Dhabi.
Speaking to Khaleej Times on Wednesday, Hassan Al Maeeni, an officer from Dubai Police elite Search and Rescue brigade, said their objective was to showcase their 'commitment to emergency preparedness and readiness to respond to any types of crises and disasters.'
Among the technologies and advanced equipment displayed by Dubai Police were:
Life-saver radar
Al Maeeni described the rescue radar as a life saver as it can help find survivors buried underneath a rubble up to 10 metres deep. 'It can be easily deployed and it works in any type of weather and environment. It is also water-proof.'
It has been proven as a game-changer in search and rescue operations in disaster sites such as landslides, earthquakes and collapsed buildings.
'The rescue radar is placed on the surface of a rubble and the operator will use a monitor to control the customised sensors that are capable of capturing the body's natural temperature,' Al Maeeni explained to Khaleej Times.
All-seeing camera
The 360° search camera serves as the 'all-seeing eye' of emergency responders during rescue operations. 'They can searching through a rubble by inserting the camera. It can also communicate with the victim as it has a mic,' said Al Maeeni.
'The camera can be used in confined spaces and even dark areas as it has built-in LED lights,' he noted, adding: 'The camera also records the whole rescue operation.'
The life detector, meanwhile, is an acoustic device that senses life in disaster zones. 'It can be attached to any surface, and using the six sensors, will hear any movement and identify any survivors buried underneath a collapsed structure,' said Al Maeeni.
He added: 'The sensors — all six of them — are strategically placed in a certain rescue zone to detect auditory cues and help the rescue team pinpoint the location of any survivor. It also transmits real-time data and gives as an opportunity to communicate with the survivor.
Powered for rugged terrain
When it comes to rescuing someone in a rugged terrain, including undulating sand dunes, the Can-Am ATV serves as the go-to vehicle. Al Maeeni said the vehicle drastically reduces equipment switchover as the ATV is specially fitted with firefighting and rescue tools.
'It allows us to penetrate deeper into disaster zones, making on-site rescues more efficient,' he noted, adding: 'Officers operating are also highly skilled who can perform first aid.'
Meanwhile, a rescue drone can go along with the ATV, especially at night as the drone is equipped with thermal imaging, lights, and navigation aids to locate victims in inaccessible areas.

Employees in the UAE can now receive their salaries through digital wallets, as the use of this technology has grown exponentially over the past few years. On Monday, the UAE's second telecom operator, du, launched the 'Salary in the Digital Wallet' (SITW) feature, allowing the UAE workforce to receive their salaries directly into their du Pay digital wallets. Through the multilingual du Pay platform, UAE residents can transfer money globally, pay bills, recharge telco accounts, order a debit card, and make card payments. As reported by Khaleej Times, the use of digital wallets is growing in the UAE, especially among expatriates from Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, and other Asian countries for remitting money to their home countries. Currently, some of the popular digital wallets in the UAE include Apple Pay, Samsung Pay, and Google Pay, among others. To receive salaries in their digital wallets, customers will receive a unique IBAN when registering with du Pay. This will empower residents with instant access to their funds through the du Pay mobile application, along with a physical du Pay card for cashless transactions. The company said this digital wallet feature is especially beneficial for residents earning less than Dh5,000 per month, who typically have limited or no access to traditional banking services. Importantly, customers can open a zero-balance account with du Pay. According to Research and Markets, the prepaid card and digital wallet market in the UAE is projected to grow by 12.7 per cent annually, reaching a value of $8.28 billion (Dh30.4 billion) in 2025. It is expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 10.7 per cent, reaching $12.43 billion (Dh45.6 billion) by 2029, driven by increased digital adoption and government initiatives. 'The shift towards digital payment solutions is driven by a growing fintech ecosystem and enhanced payment infrastructure, while the rise of digital wallets is expected to further accelerate financial inclusion,' it said.

Trial users will continue to enjoy the original rates for one month before shifting to the new prices. Gift cards purchased under previous rates will still be redeemable under the Premium Individual plan. Spotify said the price adjustments reflect ongoing efforts to innovate and deliver value while adapting to market conditions. UAE: Spotify hikes premium package charges; users to soon pay up to Dh40 monthly
Music lovers in the UAE will soon have to pay more for their subscription plans as Spotify announced a hike to its premium plan prices. Speaking to Khaleej Times, an advisor at the streaming platform confirmed the new prices are set to be introduced for all plans from September onwards. "As we continue to grow our platform, we are updating our premium prices, so that we can keep innovating in changing market conditions. These updates will help us continue delivering value to fans," said the advisor. Users will be given a one-month grace period before the new price becomes effective, unless they cancel before the grace period ends. Earlier this month, Spotify had announced that it would be increasing prices and subscribers would receive an email explaining the price increase over the next month. The company had clarified the price would rise to 11.99 euros ($13.86) per month from 10.99 euros in markets including South Asia, the Middle East, Africa, Europe, Latin America and the Asia-Pacific region. Price increases in the past, combined with cost-cutting efforts in recent years, have helped Spotify achieve its first annual profit for 2024. Price increase On Saturday, some users received an email informing them of the same. For those who may not have received these yet, Spotify has advised listeners to check their junk or spam folders. The new rates will be charged from the customer's respective billing date in September. In case one is unable to recall this date, they can visit their account page to find the billing date. Here are the new prices: Premium Individual: The previous plan that used to cost Dh21.99 for a month will now be available for Dh23.99. Premium Student: The plan of Dh11.99 will now be available for Dh12.99. Premium Duo: The duo plan that used to cost Dh27.99 will now be available for Dh32.99. These users will have one month at the original price after the end of the trial. After this, the new price for the chosen plan will come into effect. Recent changes Spotify is also benefiting from Apple's approval of the Swedish company's US app update to show subscription prices and external payment links, after a judge barred the iPhone maker from charging commission on off-app purchases. The audio streaming company's CEO Daniel Ek said this change has led to "a very positive uptick" in the US. He also said that if similar rules are adopted in Europe and the UK, it would benefit both Spotify and other app developers. Spotify has been expanding its library of video content to attract subscribers, including through its partner programme, which is designed to help podcast creators by offering them monetisation options. A growing number of creators are joining the Spotify Partner Programme, resulting in a significant increase in video content on our platform, Ek had earlier said.
