Teacher knocked unconscious in Dundee school when raging pupil threw her 'like a ragdoll'

The Courier22-04-2025

A Dundee school teacher was knocked unconscious and left covered in blood after being thrown 'like a ragdoll' by an angry pupil.
After carrying out the vicious attack, Keiran Matthew put his feet up on a teacher's desk and said: 'The stupid cow deserved it.'
Dundee Sheriff Court heard how the female teacher at St Paul's Academy in Kirkton was lucky not to have sustained life-threatening injuries at the 18-year-old's hands.
Matthew, who has diagnosed attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and a learning difficulty, pled guilty to attacking the woman in a corridor on March 22 2024.
The horrific assault unfolded after the then-S5 pupil refused to get changed separately from other pupils before PE.
This measure – agreed by Matthew, his foster mum and the school – was put in place because of previous aggression towards other children.
Fiscal depute Laura Bruce said Matthew was described as a 'couple of years behind' in his development and was educated outside mainstream classes.
On the afternoon in question, Matthew – around 6ft in height – was said to have been 'agitated' and 'heightened' over the pre-PE changing.
The teacher who would be attacked was deemed to be a 'safe' person for him and had previously succeeded in de-escalating volatile incidents.
She took the decision to have two other teachers and pupils placed in a locked classroom away from Matthew, who sat with his head down at a table.
Mrs Bruce said: 'The accused then realised they had gone to the ICT class and moved towards the door and said 'I'm f*****g going in there too'.
'He tried to exit to the corridor where (the teacher) had her back to him.
'She recalls him gripping her in a rugby-style grip with her arms pinned to her sides and the next thing she felt was the horrific impact of her head striking the floor.'
The court heard the teacher blacked out momentarily but regained consciousness and made a bloody handprint on the wall as she tried to get to her feet.
Staff came to her aid after she screamed for help while bleeding profusely.
'She was blinded by her own blood, which covered her face and top with a large amount of blood seen on the floor,' Mrs Bruce said.
'Another teacher had witnessed the accused lift her completely off her feet, throwing her to the floor deliberately and landing headfirst.
'Another said she appeared to be like a ragdoll flying through the air.
'The accused sat at a teacher's desk, with his feet on the desk and using his mobile phone.
'He told a teacher 'Sir, it wasn't an outburst of anger – she deserved it'.'
During a phone call to tell someone he hit a teacher, Matthew again said 'she deserved it'.
He later banged on the desk and said: 'The stupid cow deserved it.'
A colleague took the injured teacher to Ninewells Hospital because of an expected 20-minute wait for an ambulance.
She was given 10 stitches and had to return for a CT scan because she was confused and unable to finish sentences.
The woman was diagnosed with concussion and plastic surgeon Dr Ketki Kaushal said the assault could have been life-threatening.
It was revealed she sustained a Y-shaped wound to her forehead, which would leave an 'obvious and permanent' scar for life.
After being cautioned and charged, Matthew, of Dundee, replied: 'I am sorry.'
He pled guilty to seizing the teacher's neck and body, throwing her to the floor, causing her to strike her head and be rendered unconscious.
He admitted the assault was to her severe injury, permanent disfigurement and the danger of her life. He will be sentenced at a later date.

Young driver who rammed police car at Fife petrol station is jailed

A danger driver who rammed a police car at a Fife petrol station and two weeks later mounted a pavement to evade officers, has been jailed for more than two years. Daryl Morrison was driving while disqualified on both occasions, Kirkcaldy Sheriff Court heard. The 21-year-old appeared in the dock from custody to plead guilty to four charges – two each of driving dangerously and while disqualified on December 23 and January 6. Prosecutor Sarah Smith told the court Morrison was disqualified from driving in March last year and was also previously banned in 2021. On December 23, he was in an Audi when he drove at speeds of about 90mph on the A92, then turned off to Cowdenbeath and stopped at Beath Service Station in High Street. Two police vehicles blocked the entrance and exit to the forecourt and an officer shouted for him to turn off the engine. Morrison hit a police car as he forced his way out and made off at speed, abandoning the Audi elsewhere in the town. At around 3.50pm on January 6, police saw Morrison in a BMW parked outside an address in Wellesley Road, Methil, and approached him as he sat in the driver seat. The fiscal depute said Morrison mounted the pavement and drove at one of the officers, who had to get out of the way. The constable's right hand made contact with the bonnet and he was injured, according to the charges. A child and elderly woman were nearby as Morrison mounted the pavement and drove off at speed, the court heard. Morrison's defence lawyer referenced a psychiatric report in pointing out her client has ADHD and this provides context – but not an excuse – for the driving. The solicitor said her client used driving as a 'coping mechanism' and 'form of escape'. She added: 'His position is he panicked coming across police and acted in the manner he did.' She said remanded Morrison, who has analogous previous offending, is remorseful and intends to turn his life around upon his release. Sheriff Krista Johnston said she took into account his young age and the requirement to apply young person sentencing guidelines, background reports highlighting adverse childhood experiences and his ADHD diagnosis, as well as his early guilty pleas. However, the sheriff said his record shows a 'great deal of time, effort and expense' has been put into supporting him within the community in a bid to rehabilitate him but he has continued to offend. She said he showed 'utter disregard' for the safety of others and jailed him for a total of 25 months, backdated to January 14 when he was remanded. Morrison was also banned him from driving for four-and-a-half years.

Dealer pedalled drugs from bra in Dundee city centre

A brazen drug dealer caught pushing street Valium in Dundee city centre has been jailed. Police CCTV captured Paula Bowman exchanging wraps of etizolam and cash on High Street and City Square on multiple occasions. Bowman – who has a lengthy criminal record – was given the chance to cooperate with social workers in a last-ditch attempt to avoid prison. However, the 53-year-old did not engage, with Dundee Sheriff Court hearing about the extent of her 'chaotic' lifestyle. A narrative of facts previously described Bowman's drug-dealing between September 2021 and July 2022. Footage in the first incident captured Bowman taking a wrap containing a white substance from her bra. A full search later revealed she was concealing 18 different wraps containing 327 white tablets. The narrative said of an incident just before 10am in June 2022: 'The on-duty CCTV operator observed the accused handing out several white tablets to numerous members of the public in exchange for money.' More than £1,700 in cash was recovered from Bowman, with the drugs recovered having a maximum value of £511. Bowman, of St Mary Street, previously pled guilty to drug-dealing and returned to court for sentencing after a social work report was prepared. 'The report makes extremely poor reading,' solicitor Anika Jethwa conceded. 'She's had long-standing drug problems, significant mental health issues and has struggled to deal with the death of her long-term partner. 'The difficulties this woman has are very much entrenched. 'The offences were committed in the city centre where she was hanging around with various like-minded people, involving herself in the supply of drugs. 'She's not going into town associating with these people any more.' Sheriff Tim Niven-Smith told Bowman, who repeatedly shook her head while being addressed: 'I was rather dismayed to find you did not really attend any of the appointments and the only times you did attend was because you were in crisis. 'It seemed to demonstrate quite eloquently you still living quite a chaotic lifestyle. 'You are just going to be a revolving door to custody. 'I appreciate you may have been concerning yourself in the supply of drugs as a means of funding your own addiction but you have still seen fit to bring misery to others in supplying drugs that have caused your life to spiral out of control.' She was jailed for a total of 491 days.

Schoolboy attacked teacher like a 'ragdoll' and left her permanently disfigured

A teenager who attacked a teacher and said 'the stupid cow deserves it' has been spared prison. Carol Shaw, who worked at St Paul's Academy in Dundee, was seriously injured after Keiran Matthew grabbed her and dumped her head-first on a concrete floor. She was knocked unconscious after being thrown 'like a ragdoll' to the ground, and left lying in a pool of her own blood while Matthew played on his phone and put his feet up on another teacher's desk. Matthew, who was 17 at the time of the attack but is now 18, walked free from court after his sentence fell within Scottish rules on avoiding short-term prison sentences for first offenders. The attack happened after Matthew refused to get changed separately from other pupils for a PE class. The measure had been agreed by Matthew, his foster mum and the school because of his previous aggression towards other pupils. But on March 22 of last year he became 'agitated and heightened' over his separation from other pupils, so Ms Shaw was called in because she was deemed a 'safe' person for him and had successfully de-escalated volatile incidents. Two other teachers and pupils were placed in a locked classroom away from Matthew, but Fiscal depute Laura Bruce told the court: 'The accused then realised they had gone to the ICT class and moved towards the door and said 'I'm f****** going in there too'. 'He tried to exit to the corridor where Ms Shaw had her back to him. 'She recalls him gripping her in a rugby-style grip with her arms pinned to her sides and the next thing she felt was the horrific impact of her head striking the floor. 'She was blinded by her own blood, which covered her face and top with a large amount of blood seen on the floor. 'Another teacher had witnessed the accused lift her completely off her feet, throwing her to the floor deliberately and landing head-first. 'Another said she appeared to be like a ragdoll flying through the air. 'The accused sat at a teacher's desk, with his feet on the desk and using his mobile phone. 'He told a teacher 'Sir, it wasn't an outburst of anger. She deserved it'.' He later banged on the desk and said: 'The stupid cow deserved it.' A colleague took Ms Shaw to hospital due to an expected 20-minute wait for an ambulance. She suffered concussion, was unable to finish sentences, and was given 10 stitches, leaving her with a large Y-shaped scar on her head. Plastic surgeon Dr Ketki Kaushal said the assault could have been life-threatening. Matthew pled guilty to seizing the teacher's neck and body, throwing her to the floor, causing her to strike her head and be rendered unconscious. He admitted the assault was to her severe injury, permanent disfigurement and the danger of her life. Matthew, who has ADHD and an 'extremely low' IQ range between 47 and 59, said 'I am sorry' when he was cautioned and charged with the assault. Solicitor Theo Finlay, defending, said: 'He has had longstanding issues managing his emotions. It is likely he was already in a heightened condition. He experiences nightmares and requires to be medicated. 'That is attributed to childhood abuse. He needs prompts to eat and struggles in noisy or busy environments. He was not being allowed into the changing room and had feelings of unfairness. 'He described becoming agitated. The teacher moved others away, which made him feel more agitated and singled out. At school he felt intensely disliked and frequently provoked by his peers.' Sheriff Tim Niven-Smith said the assault merited 18 months in prison, but this was reduced for an early guilty plea. The sentence then fell within Scottish sentencing rules on avoiding short sentences for first offenders, meaning Matthew was able to walk free from court. He was placed under social work supervision for three years and ordered to attend courses including one for anger management. Matthew was also placed on a Restriction of Liberty Order for 12 months between 9pm and 7am every night. Sheriff Niven-Smith said: 'It is difficult to imagine a more serious assault, having regard to the consequences of your attack for Ms Shaw. More Trending 'It is not over-egging the pudding or exaggerating to say your attack has affected her life in every aspect. 'She is permanently disfigured. Photos show an extensive, significant scar on her head. 'Until her promotion, she was the safe person for you to seek sanctuary with if you felt overwhelmed. She has dedicated her life to vulnerable school children such as you. 'You have robbed her of her career as she has been unable to go back to school due to panic attacks, nightmares and night terrors as a result of this assault.'
