Brazil beat Colombia in shootout in Women's Copa America final thriller

Khaleej Times6 days ago
Brazil successfully defended their Women's Copa America crown by defeating Colombia 5-4 in a shootout on Saturday to claim their ninth continental title after a roller-coaster final in Quito ended 4-4.
The decider at the Estadio Rodrigo Paz Delgado saw Colombia take the lead three times, only for Brazil to respond on each occasion.
Brazil great Marta forced extra time with a late equaliser and the veteran struck again in the 105th minute to seemingly seal victory.
But a resilient Colombia found yet another equaliser to send the encounter to penalties, where Brazil's experience ultimately prevailed.
"I think women's soccer has been growing a lot. I think the trend is for it to be more competitive. Everyone here deserved a match like this. Congratulations to Colombia too," Brazil's Amanda Gutierres said.
"This means a lot. I think it's Brazil's job. It's that mentality of never giving up. That's a source of pride for Brazil. I think it means a lot to Brazilians."
Both teams created early chances but the breakthrough came in the 25th minute when Colombia's Linda Caicedo capped off a tidy passing move with a composed low finish from close range.
Brazil got the equaliser in the dying moments of the first half when Angelina stepped up to calmly convert a penalty after VAR confirmed a foul by Jorelyn Carabali on Gio Garbelini.
Colombia regained the lead in the 69th minute via a Brazil own goal, defender Tarciane attempting a routine back pass to goalkeeper Lorena but unaware that she had already charged off her line to collect the ball.
Gutierres equalised for Brazil again 10 minutes from time with her sixth goal in the tournament, a fierce strike off Garbelini's pass, but striker Mayra Ramirez restored Colombia's lead by netting after a quick counter-attack eight minutes later.
'Las Cafeteras' were within touching distance of their first continental title until Marta, introduced as a late substitute, delivered a moment of magic with a stunning equaliser six minutes into stoppage time, forcing the game into extra time.
Marta struck again in the 105th minute when she tapped in a fine cross from Angelina but Colombia turned things around again as Leicy Santos' brilliant free kick sailed into the top corner in the 115th minute.
The penalty shootout mirrored the drama of the match, with Colombia taking the early advantage after Angelina's miss.
However, when Manuela Pavi failed to convert and goalkeeper Lorena saved Leicy Santos' effort Brazil held the advantage.
Marta had the chance to seal victory but Katherine Tapia's save sent the shootout to sudden death, where Carabali's miss finally handed Brazil their ninth continental title.

Manchester United seal €85m deal for RB Leipzig striker Benjamin Sesko

Manchester United have completed their third major move of the summer transfer window by signing RB Leipzig striker Benjamin Sesco in a deal that could rise up to €85 million. United are understood to be paying Leipzig an initial €76.5m plus a potential €8.5m in add-ons for the 22-year-old Slovenian who scored 39 goals in 87 games for the German club. Sesco – who was also wanted by Newcastle United but decided on a move to Old Trafford – joins Bryan Mbeumo (€75m from Brentford) and Matheus Cunha (€74.2m from Wolves) as the club aim to bolster an attack that has struggled for goals in recent seasons. United endured their worst their worst top-flight campaign in 51 years when they finished 15th last season and also lost to Tottenham Hotspur in the Europa League final. Only four other teams scored fewer than United's 44 goals in 38 Premier League games. Despite last season's struggles, that saw Erik ten Hag sacked and replaced by Ruben Amorim, Sesko believes he is joining the 'perfect place' to win trophies and improve as a player. 'The history of Manchester United is obviously very special but what really excites me is the future,' Sesko said in a statement on the club's website. 'When we discussed the project, it was clear that everything is in place for this team to continue to grow and compete for the biggest trophies again soon. 'From the moment that I arrived, I could feel the positive energy and family environment that the club has created. It is clearly the perfect place to reach my maximum level and fulfil all of my ambitions. 'I cannot wait to start learning from Ruben and connecting with my teammates to achieve the success that we all know we are capable of together.' Sesko is set to be unveiled to his new supporters on Saturday when United entertain Fiorentina at Old Trafford. His Premier League bow should come next Sunday when Amorim's side are at home to Arsenal on the opening weekend of the new season. Standing 1.95 metres tall, Sesko's towering physique, electric pace and eye for goal have earned comparisons with Manchester City's Erling Haaland. Like Haaland, he also made his name at RB Salzburg before moving to Germany in 2023. United are banking on Sesko's potential to fire them back into contention at the top of the Premier League. Between them, Sesko, Cunha and Mbeumo combined for 58 goals last season. United director of football Jason Wilcox said: 'Benjamin possesses a rare combination of electrifying pace and the ability to physically dominate defenders, making him one of the most exceptional young talents in world football. 'We have followed Benjamin's career closely; all of our data analysis and research concluded that he has the required qualities and personality to thrive at Manchester United. 'Working under the guidance of Ruben and our excellent performance team, Benjamin is joining the perfect environment to support him to reach his world-class potential. 'The desire that all of our new signings have shown to join the club this summer highlights the appeal and stature of Manchester United as we continue to build and develop a team capable of challenging for the biggest honours.' The rebuild under Amorim continues to gather pace. While Mbeumo, Cunha and Sesko have been brought in, there are a number of players heading out. Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho, Antony, Tyrell Malacia, Alejandro Garnacho were all told not to report back for preseason training with the rest of the squad as they looked to finalise moves away. Rashford has since joined Barcelona on a 12-month loan with the Catalan giants having the option of signing the England international on a permanent deal. Sancho has been linked to various clubs including Atletico Madrid and Juventus, Antony is keen to extend his successful loan spell at Real Betis for another season, while Scottish champions Celtic are reported to be interested in Malacia. Chelsea, meanwhile, are in talks with United to sign Argentine winger Garnacho who is valued at £50m by the club.

Arne Slot 'very happy' with Liverpool squad as speculation continues over Alexander Isak

Arne Slot refused to be drawn on speculation continuing to link Liverpool with a big-money move for Newcastle forward Alexander Isak as the manager declared himself happy with his current squad. The 25-year-old has been linked with a British transfer record move to Liverpool after failing to feature in Newcastle's pre-season preparations. Liverpool have reportedly seen a £110 million bid for Isak rejected, with Newcastle apparently asking for £150m. Isak's future at Newcastle now hangs in the balance after the Swedish striker was reportedly told to train apart from the rest of the squad. Isak missed the Magpies' trip to Singapore and South Korea, citing a minor thigh injury, and instead flew to Spain to train at former club Real Sociedad. He has since returned to Tyneside. Premier League champions Liverpool have invested huge sums in the market this summer with a club-record deal for midfielder Florian Wirtz headlining a group of new signings that also includes forward Hugo Ekitike, left-back Milos Kerkez and right-back Jeremie Frimpong. But they have continued to pursue Isak as they seek a replacement for Darwin Nunez who is closing in on a £46m move to Saudi Pro League club Al Hilal. Asked about Isak on Friday, Slot said: 'As you know, from me and I think every manager works like this, you never talk about players that are not yours. I can talk about Hugo, who we have signed and who has done really well until now. 'We are very happy with the squad and have every reason to be happy because we won the league last season. OK, players left but we brought players in as well and youngsters are doing good. 'At this moment of time, Darwin might leave, indeed, but things are not signed so we need to wait a few days until that is completely done but there is indeed a chance he is going to leave.' Liverpool's spending spree of almost £300m has not included a central defender despite the sale of Jarell Quansah to Bayer Leverkusen. During pre-season midfielders Ryan Gravenberch and Wataru Endo, as well as full-backs Andrew Robertson and Kostas Tsimikas, have all filled in. But Slot does not see it as a lack of depth. 'Unfortunately, (Joe Gomez) has a minor injury at the moment but he will be back with the team very soon,' he said. 'We have numerous options who can play there. But as always, it's the same boring answer as players we may bring in or not, I am really happy with the players we have.' Slot is preoccupied with other tasks as well. Liverpool take on FA Cup winners Crystal Palace in the Community Shield on Sunday before beginning their Premier League title defence against Bournemouth at Anfield the following weekend. Liverpool are eyeing a 17th Community Shield title, with their latest coming in 2022. 'It's nice if you can start the season by winning something. We have a chance at the beginning of the season. We face a difficult Crystal Palace side. They have shown how hard it is to win a one-off game with them,' Slot said. And while the focus is on new signings, one player who has grabbed the limelight during pre-season has been 16-year-old winger Rio Ngumoha, who has registered three goals and two assists this summer with some eye-catching efforts – the most recent coming against Athletic Bilbao on Monday. 'That is sometimes also difficult and you never know how an individual handles the situation,' Slot said. 'A year ago, Trey Nyoni scored a goal against Sevilla when he was 17, very young. They have an incredible chance to work and be around players like Virgil van Dijk, Mo Salah and all these incredible players every day and see what they do to be ready to perform every three days … 'It's been a promising start for him and Trey Nyoni because Trey also played a very good game at Anfield four days ago.'
