Sadiq Khan calls on Britain to recognise Palestine

Telegraph23-07-2025
Sir Sadiq Khan has joined a growing number of senior Labour figures calling on Sir Keir Starmer to recognise Palestine as a state.
The Mayor of London said on Wednesday that the Government should 'immediately recognise Palestinian statehood' and argued that there 'can be no two state solution if there is no variable state left to call Palestine'.
His intervention comes amid growing calls among senior Labour figures, including at least three Cabinet ministers, for the Government to bring forward its recognition of Palestine.
The UK is planning to formally designate Palestine as a state, in defiance of the Israeli government, but says it will do so with allies 'at the point of maximum impact'.
However, Sir Keir is facing severe pressure from members of his own team to do so earlier, including Wes Streeting, Shabana Mahmood and Hilary Benn, according to reports.

In a statement, Sir Sadiq said that the 'absolutely harrowing scenes of suffering in Gaza are being made worse by the day, with no sign of the crisis abating', including 'starving children searching hopelessly for food in the rubble' and 'family members shot dead by Israeli soldiers as they search for aid'.
He said: 'In heartbreaking scenes, innocent lives are being torn apart before the eyes of the world.
'The international community – including our own government – must do far more to pressure the Israeli government to stop this horrific, senseless killing and let vital life-saving aid in.
'Nothing justifies the actions of the Israeli government. The UK must immediately recognise Palestinian statehood. There can be no two state solution if there is no viable state left to call Palestine.'
His words echoed a rare intervention on foreign policy by Mr Streeting in the Commons chamber on Tuesday, immediately before MPs rose for the summer recess.
He said: 'I sincerely hope that the international community can come together, as the foreign secretary has been driving towards, to make sure that we see an end of this war but also that we recognise the state of Palestine while there is a state of Palestine left to recognise.'
Ms Mahmood, the Justice Secretary, and Mr Benn, the Northern Ireland Secretary, have raised the issue in private meetings with Sir Keir in recent months, according to The Guardian.
Earlier this month, almost 60 Labour MPs issued the same call in an open letter to Downing Street.
Their intervention was prompted by the announcement by Israel Katz, Israel's defence minister, that he would force all residents in Gaza to move to a camp in what remains of the city of Rafah.
David Lammy, the Foreign Secretary, has ramped up his rhetoric towards Israel in recent weeks, telling the BBC on Tuesday the country's military actions in Gaza were 'grotesque'.
The UK is among a list of 27 countries that have called for an immediate end to the war, while Antonio Guterres, the UN secretary general, has said 'last lifelines keeping people alive [in Gaza ] are collapsing'.
At a meeting of the Commons Liaison Committee on Monday, Sir Keir said the Government would recognise Palestine 'at a time most conducive to the prospects of peace'.
Later this month, France and Saudi Arabia will chair a UN conference on the issue, which could provide a forum for allies to recognise Palestine.
But a joint recognition statement has already been delayed once by a lack of progress in ceasefire negotiations between Israel and Hamas.
The US has backed proposals for a 60-day ceasefire, which is under discussion at peace negotiations in Doha.

Social media images of Gaza cafes can't hide truth: Israel is starving Palestinians

Israel's prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, and his supporters have variously argued that there is no starvation in Gaza, or that if there is hunger it is the fault of Hamas – who they accuse of stealing aid – or the United Nations. In a recent interview with the New Yorker, Amit Segal, the chief political correspondent for Israel's Channel 12, said he did not believe there was hunger in Gaza. Israel's consul general in New York said that there was 'no deliberate starvation in Gaza, only a deliberate disinformation campaign orchestrated by Hamas'. Social media has also helped spread misinformation about hunger in Gaza, with photographs and video of cafes being presented as evidence that there is no famine. One Israeli creator on YouTube with more than 400,000 subscribers posted a video entitled 'Summer 2025 (Genocide Never Tasted So Good)', which highlights the existence of several small cafes in Gaza City in an attempt to disprove the existence of food shortages. But Israeli government data clearly shows that it is starving Gaza. UN-backed food security experts said that Gaza is currently experiencing a 'worst-case scenario' famine. Even Netanyahu's biggest ally, Donald Trump, has said there is 'real starvation' in the territory. Despite such conclusions, pro-Israeli figures have continued to cast doubt on the veracity of images of malnourished children. In an interview with Piers Morgan, the US media personality Megyn Kelly dismissed such images as having been 'manipulated', before claiming that Hamas and 'frankly a lot of Palestinians' are 'masters of propaganda and they're fine having their own children starve just as long as they can put them on camera'. Such attitudes are reflected in the comments under the Gaza cafes video, where a typical post reads: 'It is hard to imagine that people can be so easily fooled into passionately believing the 'genocide' and 'famine' in Gaza when evidence against such false narratives is so readily available.' But while a small number of cafes are open in Gaza – including some of those in the video – they are operating in a severely limited capacity due to spiralling prices and scarcity of key ingredients, according to Salah Ahmad, the co-founder of HopeHub, an organization that created co-working spaces for remote workers and students in cafes across the territory. Basic ingredients are hard to obtain, and prices fluctuate wildly from day to day: a kilo of flour can cost $12 one day, and $40 the next. Consequently, the small array of snacks these cafes are able to still offer are usually extremely expensive, Ahmad said. 'When you see a small coffee shop or cafe selling drinks or cakes at high prices, it does not truly reflect the reality most people in Gaza are living,' Ahmad said. 'In many cases, it is just a small business. The owners are simply trying to survive and feed their families with a sense of dignity.' Of the five cafes in the video, one was not currently open because they ran out of supplies, one said it was reopening after being shut down for several weeks because there were no supplies, and another said it was no longer selling food, Ahmad said. Often, cafes in Gaza remain open even when they do not offer food, as they provide internet connections and electricity from solar panels, Ahmad said. HopeHub is still operating two co-working spaces out of cafes – one in Khan Younis and one in Deir al-Balah. Further confusion has been created by the fact that some of the cafes are posting pictures and videos from before they closed down on. Hamada Ice Cream shop, which has not been open for weeks, recently posted a highlight reel of the pastries, cakes and drinks the cafe once served. 'Me and 2 million Gazans are waiting for this moment Oh God, make things easy and these days pass safely, O Lord,' reads the video's Arabic caption. The few cafes that are open are obviously not able to serve Gaza's entire population, Ahmad said. 'Most people in Gaza right now are poor and trying to survive,' he said. Those who do go to the cafes 'might be employees who still receive salaries from international organizations, remote workers, or journalists', he said. 'They are holding on to hope, clinging to familiar routines, trying to stay connected to their memories of a more beautiful Gaza. For them, going out for a coffee is not about luxury. It is about staying human.'

Donald Trump claims Jaguar Land Rover is in 'absolute turmoil' after 'totally disastrous woke' rebrand

Donald Trump has claimed Jaguar Land Rover is in 'absolute turmoil' after the company's 'totally disastrous woke ' rebrand. The US President labelled the British car maker's recent advert, which featured brightly dressed models, as a 'total disaster' and 'stupid'. Trump was scathing of Jaguar as he compared the firm's fortunes to those of clothing brand American Eagle in a rant on his social media platform Truth Social. ' Sydney Sweeney, a registered Republican, has the "HOTTEST" ad out there. It's for American Eagle, and the jeans are "flying off the shelves",' he wrote. 'Go get 'em Sydney! On the other side of the ledger, Jaguar did a stupid, and seriously WOKE advertisement, THAT IS A TOTAL DISASTER! The CEO just resigned, and the company is in absolute turmoil. 'Who wants to buy a Jaguar after looking at that disgraceful ad. Shouldn't they have learned a lesson from Bud Lite, which went Woke.' Trump ended the post by saying that 'being woke is losers'. It was announced last week that Jaguar Land Rover CEO Adrian Mardell is to retire at the end of this year. Mardell, 64, has been at the company for more than three decades including the last two years as chief executive during one of the most transformative periods in the firm's recent history. Arguably his biggest involvement has been his role in Jaguar's controversial 'woke' rebrand and shift to an electric-only premium car brand from 2026. Last month JLR said it was axing 500 management roles, which are going as part of a voluntary redundancy programme for managers in the UK. A spokesman said: 'As part of normal business practice, we regularly offer eligible employees the opportunity to leave JLR through limited voluntary redundancy programmes.' Sales of the luxury car manufacturer appear to have nose-dived following its controversial move to scrap its iconic 'growler' big cat logo in November. The firm's rebrand saw it replace the well-known badge in favour of a geometric 'J' design - which lovers of the brand raged looked like the logo on a handbag clasp. And as the firestorm surrounding the famed car maker's change continues to engulf it, sales at Jaguar Europe have plunged a staggering 97.5 per cent. But the British car marque has insisted the reason for the freefall in sales is not because of a lack of support or an image overhaul - but because it has stopped making older models as it focuses on its relaunch with an all-electric offering. Defending the news, the firm said it was 'pointless' to compare figures for 2024 and 2025, as 'Jaguar is not currently on sale in the UK' while it goes through its 'sunset period' of radical change. A spokeswoman for Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) said: 'Jaguar's transformation towards a new portfolio of pure-electric vehicles was announced as part of the Reimagine strategy in 2021. JLR always envisaged a period when the current range would "no longer be on sale" before the introduction of the new Jaguar collection. 'Production of XE, XF, F-TYPE, I-PACE and E-PACE all came to an end in 2024 as part of that transition. This strategic "sunset" of the product range is going to plan and will allow Jaguar to transform and reposition the brand for the future. 'Comparing Jaguar sales to 2024 is pointless as we are no longer producing vehicles in 2025 with low levels of retail inventory available. Jaguar's rebranding is not related to a sales decline.' Jaguar has not announced an official date for when its new fleet of high-end electric motors will hit the forecourt. It stopped sales of current Jaguars on November 11 as it prepared for its next generation of luxury vehicles to arrive. Defending the campaign late last year, JLR's Managing Director Rawdon Glover told the Financial Times: 'If we play in the same way that everybody else does, we'll just get drowned out.'

Israel's Netanyahu to convene cabinet on Gaza war goals

JERUSALEM, Aug 4 (Reuters) - Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Monday he would convene his security cabinet this week to discuss how to instruct the military to meet his war goals in Gaza. "We must continue to stand together and fight together to achieve all our war objectives: the defeat of the enemy, the release of our hostages, and the assurance that Gaza will no longer pose a threat to Israel," Netanyahu said at the outset of a regular cabinet meeting. Israel's Channel 12 cited an official from his office as saying that Netanyahu was inclining towards expanding the offensive and seizing the entire Palestinian enclave. Israeli media reported that the cabinet would meet on Tuesday to make a decision on that. Netanyahu's office did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The Gaza war began when Hamas killed 1,200 people and took 251 hostage in an attack on southern Israel on October 7, 2023, according to Israeli figures. Israel's offensive has since killed more than 60,000 Palestinians, according to Gaza health officials. According to Israeli officials, 50 hostages now remain in Gaza, only 20 of whom are believed to be alive.
