Ipswich Town legend George Burley has been nominated for an award for a book he co-wrote about his time as manager of the club. Burley, 68, and co-author Neil Prentice have been shortlisted in the Illustrated Book of the Year category at Thursday's Sports Book Awards for 'All To Play For: Ipswich Town FC The George Burley Era 1994-2002'.It documents his time as manager of the club for which he played more than 500 times from 1973 to 1985, having joined as a teenager."Coming in as a 15-year-old, it shaped me as a person, not just a footballer," he said.
Burley led the Blues back to the top flight, where they finished fifth in their first season, winning him Premier League Manager of the Season in 2001.He said the team "never gave up" and were determined to do better each season, especially going against bigger clubs. His co-author Prentice, an Ipswich Town fan, recalled that Burley had taken the team to the play-offs three times before finally winning promotion."It is the resilience that is the story," he said."For me personally, at the age I was at the time it happened, it was very, very memorable."

Former Arsenal forward jailed in UK on cannabis smuggling charge
LONDON, June 5 (Reuters) - Former Arsenal and Ipswich Town forward Jay Emmanuel-Thomas was on Thursday jailed for four years for orchestrating the smuggling of 60 kg of cannabis into Britain's Stansted Airport. The 34-year-old, who was released by Scottish second division club Greenock Morton after being charged last year, pleaded guilty at Chelmsford Crown Court last month. Britain's National Crime Agency previously said Emmanuel-Thomas had recruited his girlfriend and another woman to travel to Thailand, where Emmanuel-Thomas briefly played in 2019, to collect the cannabis and smuggle it to Britain. The two women were also charged with smuggling cannabis but the prosecution offered no evidence against them and the charges were dropped on Wednesday, the NCA added. Emmanuel-Thomas sat in the dock as Judge Alexander Mills told him: "Your transition from professional footballer to criminal represents a substantial fall from grace, one that effectively ends the only career path that you have ever known." He will serve 40% of that sentence in custody before he is released on licence. Prosecutor David Josse said the 60 kg of cannabis had a street value of approximately 600,000 pounds (roughly $816,000) and a wholesale value of around 250,000 pounds, though Emmanuel-Thomas was paid 5,000 pounds for his involvement. "This was an isolated incident (and) a catastrophic error of judgment," Emmanuel-Thomas' lawyer Alex Rose told the court.

How does Delap compare to Jackson?
Chelsea's acquisition of Liam Delap from Ipswich Town signals more than just another youth-focused signing; it marks a statement of intent. The highly-rated forward arrives at Stamford Bridge not to warm the bench, but to stake his claim as the spearhead of a new attacking era. Meanwhile, the jury remains out on Nicolas Jackson. Despite flashes of promise, the Senegalese international has yet to fully convince the Chelsea faithful that he can lead the line for a club with ambitions of challenging for the Premier League and making a serious return to the Champions League how do the two strikers stack up? What does Delap offer that Jackson might lack, and vice versa? Let's take a closer look at how these two frontmen compare as Chelsea shapes their forward line for next Jackson edges Delap slightly in height, it's the England Under-21 international who holds a clear advantage in the air. Delap's aerial prowess became particularly evident during his time at Ipswich Town - a side that operated with the least possession in the Premier League. In such a system, Delap's role was pivotal. He wasn't just a goal threat; he was a release valve. His ability to hold up the ball under pressure gave Ipswich's defence much-needed breathing room, while his strength and timing in the air made him a menace for opposition backlines. Whether contesting long balls or attacking crosses, Delap brought a physical edge that added structure and bite to Ipswich's forward play - qualities Chelsea may find there is the simple fact that Delap (12) scored more goals in the league than Jackson (10). By no means are either of these numbers outstanding, but this was the Englishman's debut season in the top-flight division as a starting forward, and he played for a side that was relegated and had the third-worst attack in the league. Delap's shooting accuracy, excluding blocks, is at 60.38% whilst Jackson is at 54.69% for the same category. Delap is also better at dribbling past players. The former Manchester City youth academy player completed almost twice as many dribbles per 90 as Jackson does. Aesthetically and statistically, Delap draws inevitable comparisons to a certain Chelsea legend. Dare it be said: there are shades of Didier Drogba in his game. Like Drogba, Delap boasts a towering presence, the physicality to lead the line on his own, and the raw power to bully defenders. He's also deceptively quick, capable of stretching defences and creating chaos in transition. While matching Drogba's legacy is a nigh-on impossible task, the early signs suggest Delap shares more than just a few traits with the iconic a new striker at Stamford Bridge and his stats show he's not there to make up the numbers.
