Design Dysphoria Celebrates the Queer Creative Imagination at Gotham's Chelsea Gallery
For its second annual show, Queer-led design exhibitionDesign Dysphoriahas installed 'Give Them the Fantasy' atGotham's Chelsea gallery. Rooted in celebrating LGBTQIA+ identity, the exhibition falls during Pride month, further spotlighting the creative camaraderie and shared resilience of queer creatives and designers.
'While the queer community is intimately intertwined with the environments it constructs and inhabits, there continues to be a need and opportunity to establish new places that prioritize queer voices and camaraderie,' the collective said in a statement. The need for such dedicated spaces is increasingly relevant in the face of today's heightened anti-LGBTQIA+ rhetoric; however, the collective remains resilient, envisioning their shared 'fantasy' as a defiant, joyful, and beautiful place.
Among 24 artists across video, furniture, glass fixtures, lighting, and more, the show is curated by fellow designersLiz Collins, Grace Whiteside ofSticky Glass, and Erica Sellers and Jeremy Silberberg ofStudio S II. On view now, Collin's expressive textile art is pouring from a circular portal on a wall, while Whitesides' truly 'Sticky' glass objects are oozing as they hang from the ceiling. Throughout the gallery, amorphous glass vessels and an iceberg-like coffee table by Studio S II boast a slimy, alien-esque appeal.
Elsewhere, visitors will find blown glass objects byDeborah Czeresko, upholstered wall works byFrancheska Alcántara, a sculptural and corporreal floor lamp byJeremy Martin, 'performative' sculptures bySavannah Knoop, and many more unique design objects. While appearing like bold individuals in their own right, the curation of objects also share a spirit of surrealism, inbetween-ness, and sensuality characteristic of contemporary queer aesthetics.
Gotham Creative VP Rachel Berks shared 'With the opening of our new Chelsea location, which has a first-of-its-kind art gallery dispensary hybrid, we're thrilled to foster an environment where the Design Dysphoria curators and other artists can create an authentically queer space within the city's vibrant design community.'
Design Dysphoria's 'Give Them the Fantasy' exhibit will be on view at Gotham's Chelsea Gallery (146 10th Ave, New York, NY 10011) until August 1, 2025.

Pride events continue to grow in Kern County
BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — The start of summer brings quite a special celebration; Pride Month in Kern County. Some are ready to kick off the festivities. 'To have a place where you can also just step aside and realize where you are in this point in time and who you are with everyone else around you, that's the most important part,' said Victor Gonzales with Bakersfield Museum of Art. 'Now is the time to not be shy about expressing who you are or having your voice heard.' In the 7th edition of Art After Dark's Pride celebration, up to 800 attendees are expected. Partnerships have almost doubled compared to past years. 'In the past years we've had close to nine community partners…now it's up to 17,' said Gonzales. 'It's also a testament to how many people are participating with us, that want to be with us and want to be celebrating this event too.' Watch this drag queen give a master class on dealing with anti-LGBTQ+ protesters
Trying to talk to conservative Christians should come with hazard pay, but one drag queen is going viral for her unique way of turning the interaction around. While attending Canyon Country Pride on June 8, drag queen Cookie Pusss passed by a man named Paul who was holding a sign reading, 'I'm A Sinner' while encouraging Pride parade attendees to repent their sins, Queerty reports. 'Anything that does not reflect the nature and character of god is not to be worshipped,' Paul said of people glorifying pride as a virtue in the now-viral TikTok video. We've all been to Pride Parades where anti-LGBTQ+ Christian protestors have held up hateful signs and hurled bible verses at queer marchers, but Cookie Pusss managed to stop Paul dead in his tracks by asking him a random "get to know you" style question that turns the whole conversation around: 'What's your favorite pizza topping?' In an instant, Paul goes from having a scowl on his face to smiling, but seems unsure why he's being asked about pizza, calling the question a 'non sequitur' while they were having a 'good conversation.' You were just kind of spouting stuff. I think the cool stuff is getting to know you,' Cookie Pusss responds. The drag queen tells Paul that if he tells her what his favorite kind of pizza is, she'll listen to him 'talk about idolatry for like five more minutes.' Paul lights up and says, 'What a deal,' before telling Cookie Pusss that bacon is his favorite topping. The two have a short conversation about pizza as though they were friends and not on opposing sides of a vast political divide, before she says, 'Well, see, now we have something we can relate on.' See on Instagram The comment section of the TikTok video, which has already been viewed 670,000 times at the time of publication, is full of people who are pleasantly surprised that the drag queen was able to turn the conversation around so easily by talking to Paul as though he were a friend. 'I'm not joking this needs to be studied because you literally made him snap out of it for a second,' someone commented. 'Oh he flirting honeyyyy,' another person wrote. 'Wait a second, tricking them into a real convo might heal the entire world,' commented someone else. 'Honestly the way you switched him from hateful religious monologuing to actual conversation was brilliant, I hope that helped him see you and others within the LGBT community as a person,' another comment read. Cookie Pusss has tried other tactics with anti-LGBTQ+ protestors, including in April when she posed and twerked in front of them in a granny-square skirt, high-heeled boots, and a bikini-style top. But it was this simple question about pizza that seems to have made the biggest difference. Cookie Pusss did not immediately respond to Pride's request for comment.
