Defunct rainwater harvesting pits in Gurgaon's Sector 40 trigger waterlogging, dengue fears
Gurgaon: In Sector 40, rainwater isn't recharging the ground — it's inundating the parks. According to residents, MCG has failed to maintain or expand the rainwater harvesting systems in the area despite repeated waterlogging issues and increasing risk of mosquitoes breeding. Out of the sector's nearly 20 parks, only six have rainwater harvesting pits, and they too, lie defunct and clogged with silt, residents said. Instead of seeping into the ground, the rainwater accumulates in low-lying areas of the parks, forming pools that take four to five days to drain, they added. This not only wastes precious water but also becomes a breeding ground for mosquitoes and other vector diseases," said RK Mahendru, RWA general secretary, Sector 40. In July, MCG issued a contract for cleaning rainwater harvesting pits in the area. But residents allege that the contractor abandoned work within just 15 days. "MCG also carried out surveys of parks and greenbelts and marked spots for new pits and upgrades. However, all of this remains on paper. Even the existing pits that were built more than a decade ago haven't been cleaned since," said Abhimanyu Yadav, RWA president, Sector 40. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Is this legal? With the ongoing monsoon, they fear a public health crisis may be looming. "What's the point of preaching about water conservation when the systems to do so are deliberately neglected?" Yadav added. Meanwhile, MCG chief engineer Vijay Dhaka said, "I will get the matter looked into and action will be taken accordingly." BHU VC urges univ officials to fast-track admin duties
Varanasi: Banaras Hindu University (BHU) vice-chancellor Prof Ajit Kumar Chaturvedi on Saturday urged the university officials to work towards strengthening the institution's positive perception among stakeholders by ensuring greater administrative efficiency and accountability. Addressing key officials of the central registry at a review meeting, Prof Chaturvedi emphasised the need to reduce procedural delays and foster a responsive work culture. "While we all walk an extra mile to perform our duties, we must ensure that delays or bureaucratic procedures do not impact the overall efficiency of the institution," he stated. The meeting was attended by joint registrars, deputy registrars, assistant registrars, the controller of examination, and additional controllers of examination. Registrar Prof Arun Kumar Singh briefed the vice-chancellor on key administrative tasks and challenges being faced across departments. In response, Prof Chaturvedi called for fast-tracking critical processes and setting clear timelines to achieve institutional goals. "Fast-tracking administrative duties should be a norm and not an exception," he added. He urged officers to remain committed to making the right decisions and highlighted the importance of inter-departmental coordination. Vadodara hosts first ‘Prithvi Namaskar' eco-spiritual tribute
Vadodara: Vadodara on Sunday witnessed Prithvi Namaskar for the first time — an eco-spiritual tribute to Mother Earth conceptualised and led by Praveen Maripelly. The event brought together 100 participants from across the country, both in person and online, at the circular FC Arena 360 in Kalali. Participants stood in a circular formation, symbolically offering love and gratitude to the planet. Maripelly, founder of SN Foundation, described Prithvi Namaskar as a 14-step practice combining mindful breathing, chanting, and multi-planar body movements to express reverence for the Earth. "Among these steps, the Bhumi Namaskar specifically invokes a deep sense of appreciation for Mother Earth, who sustains all life," he said. "Unlike traditional yoga practices, this sequence was performed directly on the bare ground — without yoga mats — to symbolise a profound and personal connection with the soil, nature, and the planet's energy. Forgoing mats emphasised humility, grounding, and an embodied sense of interconnectedness with the natural world," he added. What made the event distinctive was that each participant completed the 14-step sequence 108 times, offering their breath, motion, and energy as a sacred tribute to nature. "This was not just a yoga session — it was a moving prayer, invoking gratitude and environmental consciousness," Maripelly said, adding that the practice also served as a call for collective responsibility to protect the planet.
