CONCACAF chief rejects 64-team World Cup plan for 2030 - World
The South American proposal for the 2030 World Cup to feature 64 teams has received a serious blow with CONCACAF president Victor Montagliani rejecting the idea.
The opposition of Montagliani, who heads the confederation for the 41 member associations in North and Central America and the Caribbean, follows similar stances taken by UEFA and the Asian Football Confederation (AFC).
"I don't believe expanding the men's World Cup to 64 teams is the right move for the tournament itself and the broader football ecosystem, from national teams to club competitions, leagues, and players," Montagliani told ESPN.
The World Cup will expand from 32 to teams to 48 for the 2026 tournament in the USA, Canada and Mexico but CONMEBOL president Alejandro Dominguez recently proposed going to 64 nations for 2030.
Dominguez said such a move could be a one-off for the centenary edition of the tournament which will be hosted in Spain, Portugal and Morocco but also feature a game in three different South American nations.
But Montagliani said it was far too early to even be thinking about further expansion.
"We haven't even kicked off the new 48-team World Cup yet, so personally, I don't think that expanding to 64 teams should even be on the table," he said.
On Saturday, AFC president Sheikh Salman bin Ibrahim Al Khalifa also expressed opposition.
"Personally, I don't agree," the Bahraini leader told AFP, adding the 2030 edition had settled on 48 teams "so the matter is settled".
"If the issue remains open to change, then the door will not only be open to expanding the tournament to 64 teams, but someone might come along and demand raising the number to 132 teams," Sheikh Salman said on the sidelines of the 35th AFC Congress in Kuala Lumpur.
"Where would we end up then? It would become chaos."
UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin had called the proposal a "bad idea".
It remains to be seen what stance the FIFA leadership will take on the idea but secretary general Mattias Grafstrom said the world body would "analyse" the South American proposal.

Manchester City concluded a $150 million spending spree ahead of the Club World Cup by announcing the signing of Netherlands midfielder Tijjani Reijnders from AC Milan on Wednesday. Breakthrough season Reijnders has just been named as the best midfielder in Serie A after a breakthrough campaign in which he scored 15 goals and added five assists across all competitions for Milan, which endured a dismal season and failed to qualify for Europe. He joined Milan from AZ Alkmaar in 2023 for a fee of around 20 million euros (then $22.4 million) and recently signed a contract extension through to June 2030. That's the length of his contract at City, too. City is releasing De Bruyne to end his 10-year stint at the club and now has Reijnders and Cherki to link up with Rodri in an enticing midfield set-up. Reijnders said he was 'ecstatic' to be joining City. 'It is also a dream come true to play in the Premier League,' he said. 'This league has seen many of the best Dutch players perform through the years and it's an inspiration to follow in their footsteps.' City director of football Hugo Viana said Reijnders — who specializes in being a ball-carrying midfielder — will add 'extra energy, composure and creativity to our midfield.' City announced the transfer of Reijnders a day after the special transfer window closed but appears to have signed him in time for him to play in the new-look, 32-team Club World Cup, which starts on Saturday. City is in the same group as Juventus, Al Ain and Wydad Casablanca and its first match is on June 18. Rana Atef On Tuesday, the Saudi national team lost 2-1 to their Australian counterpart in the final round of the third stage in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers. Tennis: Wimbledon champion Krejcikova suffers shock Queen's exit - Omni sports
Barbora Krejcikova's preparations for her Wimbledon title defence suffered a major setback as the Czech crashed to a shock defeat against Rebecca Sramkova at Queen's Club on Tuesday. Krejcikova beat Italy's Jasmine Paolini in three sets in last year's Wimbledon final to win her second Grand Slam crown. But the 29-year-old's hopes of repeating that memorable triumph were rocked by her 6-4, 6-3 loss to Slovakia's Sramkova in the opening round of the Wimbledon warm-up event in London. The defeat extended a disappointing run for Krejcikova since her victory at the All England Club. She lost in the second round of the recent French Open and missed January's Australian Open with a back injury that kept her sidelined until May. Krejcikova, the world number 17, was also beaten in the US Open second round in the last Grand Slam of 2024. World number 41 Sramkova will face former US Open champion Emma Raducanu in the second round at Queen's. Raducanu, who famously won in New York as an 18-year-old qualifier in 2021, made a vibrant start to her grass-court singles season, routing Spain's Cristina Bucsa 6-1, 6-2 on Tuesday. The British star revealed before Queen's that she is still troubled by back spasms that have plagued her for much of a frustrating 2025 campaign. But Raducanu looked in fine fettle as she brushed aside Bucsa to the delight of the British fans in the Andy Murray Arena. "I must say I was quite locked in today," the world number 37 said. "I'm very pleased with my performance. "I was a little bit nervous at the beginning. It's my first time playing on this court at Queen's and the support is incredible. "I just want to stay here playing as many matches as I possibly can." In the first women's action at Queen's since 1973 -- the tournament has been solely an ATP men's event for 52 years -- Raducanu was joined in the second round by two of her compatriots. Katie Boulter won 7-6 (7/4), 1-6, 6-4 against Australian qualifier Ajla Tomljanovic. Heather Watson beat world number 27 Yulia Putintseva 6-4, 6-3 to book a clash with former Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina.
