Tigers fans fume after young gun allowed to join Lachie Galvin and leave NRL club
Wests Tigers fans are questioning why the club would allow young hooker Tallyn Da Silva to leave, after it was revealed on Friday he's been granted permission to negotiate with rivals. The 20-year-old is seen as a gun NRL prospect, but has been stuck behind Api Koroisau at the Tigers.
Da Silva has played 23 first-grade games since his debut in 2023, and looks every bit an NRL-level player. But he's spent the majority of 2025 in reserve-grade due to the fact the Tigers have Koroisau entrenched as their No.9.
Da Silva is contracted to the Tigers until the end of 2026, but the reported on Friday he's been granted permission to negotiate with rival clubs and is free to walk early if he can secure a deal. The Tigers had already stated the 20-year-old was free to leave if they extend Koroisau's current contract (also ending at the end of 2026).
The Daily Telegraph is reporting the Tigers and Knights have discussed a swap deal between Da Silva and Kai Pearce-Paul, as well as a loan for the remainder of this season. But the situation has progressed to Da Silva being free to leave immediately if he can secure his future.
It comes as another hammer blow for Tigers fans given young half Lachie Galvin recently walked out to join the Bulldogs. Speculation is rife that the Dogs are also eyeing a play for Da Silva, with regular hooker Reed Mahoney given permission to find a new club.
One person wrote on social media: "This club has made some dumb choices over the years and this one is right up there." Another commented: "Classic Tigers now losing their second best young player."
While a third kept things in perspective, saying: "Still very young. Don't think he would have debuted at any other club apart from the Tigers. Would have liked him to repay the faith though I'm sure he will continue to do well elsewhere."

Tigers management have reportedly been torn on what to do with Koroisau and Da Silva. Koroisau is still one of the best hookers in the game, but Da Silva is viewed as a future superstar who will have a long career in the NRL.
Galvin rejected a $5 million contract extension with the Tigers earlier this year, and instead opted to test his value on the open market. After months of turmoil at Benji Marshall's club, the Tigers eventually bit the bullet and allowed Galvin to walk early. He signed with the Bulldogs not long after, and made his debut for Cameron Ciraldo's side in Round 14.

‘Setting the tone': Joe Montemurro opts for mix of experience and potential with first Matildas squad

Photograph: Darren Pateman/AAP Joe Montemurro will use the start of his tenure to test the depth of Australian women's football, after the new Matildas coach announced an extended squad for four friendlies that lacks star power and is awash with fresh and fringe faces. Continuing the experimentation of interim coach Tom Sermanni, nearly half of the 33 players called up by Montemurro for the series against Slovenia and Panama have fewer than 10 caps. Advertisement Related: Matildas usher in new era after key interim role is filled perfectly by Tom Sermanni | Joey Lynch Notable absences include stand-in captain Steph Catley and forward powerhouse Caitlin Foord, who are taking personal leave. Tameka Yallop is out with injury, Katrina Gorry remains on leave and Sam Kerr's return to playing remains a mystery. Mary Fowler's extended absence also continues as she recovers from an ACL injury sustained during Manchester City's FA Women's Cup semi-final in April. Along with six uncapped players – including Young Matildas Grace Kuilamo and Adriana Taranto, who have received their first senior call-ups – Montemurro has brought back into the fold a handful of experienced Matildas who have been on the fringe in recent years. Advertisement Dynamic midfielder Alex Chidiac returns off the back of a successful A-League Women season with Melbourne Victory after which she received the Julie Dolan medal for best player in the league. Chidiac most recently stepped out in the green and gold for some token minutes during the 2023 Women's World Cup. Chloe Berryhill (nee Logarzo) and Emily Gielnik will also join the squad after returns to form and fitness. Berryhill's long-awaited return to the national team was cut short in December last year when she suffered a concussion in the 27th minute. Montemurro said the long international window allows him to lay the groundwork for the major tournaments on the horizon, chiefly the home 2026 Women's Asian Cup and the 2027 Women's World Cup in Brazil. 'This window is about setting the tone,' he said. 'We're laying the foundations for the next phase of our journey as we build relationships, create an understanding of our style of play, and enhance the high-performance environment that enables our players to thrive. Advertisement 'We wanted to use this window not just to prepare for the matches, but to really explore the talent that's coming through.' Holly McNamara, Jamilla Rankin, Natasha Prior, Bryleeh Henry, Winonah Heatley and Jessika Nash – all relatively new to the national set-up – will have another chance to shine with senior players out of the mix. One exception though is breakout star and debutant from the Argentina series Kahli Johnson who has been ruled out with an injury she picked up in the second match. Ellie Carpenter is back after taking a short break to get married, and goalkeeper Mackenzie Arnold, midfielder Hayley Raso and forward Sharn Freier have all recovered from injury. The former Lyon and Arsenal coach said his selections represent a good balance of experience and potential. Advertisement 'Slovenia and Panama have been strategically scheduled to give us the right mix of conditions and opposition as we begin this phase,' he said. 'With the blend of players in this extended squad, these fixtures allow us to explore tactical ideas, build cohesion, and gradually shape the way we want to play moving into the next cycle.' Not all players in the extended squad will be available for both the Slovenia and Panama series. Matildas squad Mackenzie Arnold, Chloe Lincoln, Sally James, Teagan Micah, Jada Whyman; Alexia Apostolakis, Ellie Carpenter (vc), Charlotte Grant, Winonah Heatley, Clare Hunt, Alanna Kennedy, Jessika Nash, Courtney Nevin, Natasha Prior, Jamilla Rankin; Chloe Berryhill, Kyra Cooney-Cross, Alex Chidiac, Jacynta Galabadaarachchi, Alana Murphy, Amy Sayer, Adriana Taranto, Emily Van Egmond (vc), Clare Wheeler; Sharn Freier, Emily Gielnik, Bryleeh Henry, Michelle Heyman, Grace Kuilamu, Holly McNamara, Hayley Raso, Remy Siemsen, Kaitlyn Torpey

'Gutted': Eagles great McGovern medically retires
A "gutted" Jeremy McGovern will leave the AFL as a West Coast great after being forced into premature retirement through concussion. McGovern announced his 197-game career was over on Friday, with the decision made for the key defender by the AFL's concussion panel. The 2018 premiership player suffered a head knock in the Eagles' round-eight fixture against Melbourne and was referred to the panel after failing to recover following the mandatory 12-day period. Lauded as the intercept king, the 33-year-old etched himself into West Coast history with his famous mark in their 2018 grand final win. Overcoming internal bleeding in the lead-up to the eventual five-point victory, McGovern's quality shone through when he ditched his man - Collingwood star Jordan De Goey - to intercept Adam Treloar's kick inside-50. The move kickstarted the chain that ended in Dom Sheed's match-winning goal. He finished that season with 77 intercept marks, the most in 2018. "It's been an absolute honour to pull on the West Coast jumper for the past 15 years and it's something that I will forever be grateful for," McGovern said in a club statement. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Waalitj Marawar 🦅 (@westcoasteagles) "As much as this isn't the way I would have liked to go out, I respect the decision. "I'm gutted I don't get to pull the jumper on and run out one more time, but sometimes this is the way the game goes." McGovern arrived at the Eagles from North Albany with pick No.44 in the 2010 rookie draft. But it wasn't until mid-way through the 2014 season, at age 22, that McGovern earned his AFL debut under former coach Adam Simpson. The lynchpin of the Eagles defence, McGovern established himself in 2015 and earned four-straight All-Australian nods from 2016 to 2019. He ends his career as the club's reigning John Worsfold medallist and as a five-time All-Australian, having collected another blazer in 2024. "To the club, I can't explain how much you have given me over my time here, and I can't thank you enough for drafting a fat kid from Albany and giving him a crack," McGovern said. "I've always loved the game and winning a premiership is every kid's dream, but the lifelong friendships and relationships you build through footy mean more to me than anything. "I will forever be indebted to West Coast, and I will always bleed blue and gold." McGovern's exit follows that of former West Coast teammate Luke Edwards, who stepped away from the game last October to focus on his recovery from multiple concussions. Collingwood duo Nathan Murphy and Josh Carmichael, Melbourne premiership player Angus Brayshaw and Western Bulldogs draftee Aiden O'Driscoll also had their careers cut short in 2024 because of concussion.

'I think y'all are terrific,' she said in an Instagram video. 'I just watched you play and I see that your fans are really loving you, so we want to make sure that we put you everywhere in the world so that everybody knows about you.' Goldberg and AWSN co-founder George Chung launched the network at the end of 2024, with Goldberg saying her motivation for the project was sparked by seeing women's sport not receive the same coverage as their male counterparts. Advertisement 'I knew that if I couldn't find these sports and watch the amazing female athletes playing them, others weren't finding them either,' she told Forbes at the time. 'I really hope shining a light on women's sports will help elevate female athletes around the world.' Netball Australia's chief executive, Stacey West, acknowledged the opportunities the new partnership would bring the league and netball more broadly. 'This breakthrough deal puts netball on screens across the globe and cements our place at the forefront of women's sport,' West said. 'AWSN shares our vision of taking women's sport to new heights. Together, we're creating a platform for our athletes and game to shine like never before.' The response to the announcement was swift and positive, with former Diamond and AFLW player Sharni Layton commenting on Goldberg's video saying: 'This is next level. Netball is going [up].' Advertisement Netball Australia chair and former Diamond Liz Ellis shared the video, adding that Super Netball was 'going places'. The partnership is inked through to 2027 and will result in 41 Super Netball matches being broadcast to the network's 900m-strong global audience. Other leagues featured on the network includes Australia's WNBL, as well as the WTA, Uefa Women's Nations League, Sweden's Damallsvenskan, European cricket, roller derby and softball. The WNBL joined the AWSN in November 2024, with then league boss, Christy Collier-Hill, saying: 'Reaching fans globally and showcasing our incredible athletes, clubs, and competition is a major milestone for the league.' It's a much needed win for Super Netball and Netball Australia, which have faced extensive off-court dramas in recent years, and will help to solidify the revival the sport is undergoing in Australia. The partnership also points to the continued growth of women's sport, and the business opportunities it offers.
