Legendary 80s Metal Band's Founding Guitarist Reimagines Iconic Debut Album Track

Miami Herald27-06-2025
K.K. Downing, the founding guitarist of the legendary 80s metal band Judas Priest, has released a brand new version of the band's hit track "Never Satisfied" from their 1974 debut album Rocka Rolla - and the newly recorded version of the song also includes former Priest vocalist Tim "Ripper" Owens.
"We just had fun in a spare bedroom, trying to create something different," Downing, 73, recently told Ultimate Classic Rock in an interview about the song, reminiscing about writing it with the band's original lead vocalist, Al Atkins. "We wrote quite a lot of stuff and then we went on the road. In my memory, 'Never Satisfied' was always in the set. When Al left and Rob [Halford] joined, then we were on the road for at least a couple of years. We had the song in the set [at that time] with Rob singing it as well."
Last year, the band reissued Rocka Rolla in honor of its 50th anniversary and included a full remix of the entire album - which, in turn, got Downing back into the band's first output. From there, the idea to rerecord the song just came naturally to him.
"I thought, 'I'm just going to plug the guitar in and have a go at jamming along to a couple of these songs,'" he told the outlet. "I just had fun doing it and I thought I would put the track down and ask Ripper if he'd do the courtesy of throwing a vocal on there. It came about really quickly and it was fun."
For Owens' part, he wanted to really honor the original track as much as possible, particularly in the way it was recorded. "It's really cool," the singer, 57, explained to Ultimate Classic Rock in a separate interview. "It's me singing it, but staying true to the melodies. I changed a little bit, added a little bit of rasp [and] some high notes."
The vocalist hopes that this new version will lead to more rerecordings in the future - and there's a lot to mine there, if they go down that route. "I said, 'Ken, let's record the whole damn thing. I don't care, let's have fun,'" Owens told the outlet. "You want to do 'Rocka Rolla,' okay. 'Run of the Mill' [would be fun]. I've always wanted to do 'Cheater,' because I felt the guitar with more balls [would be good]. I think he's just having some fun and there'll be some more coming, I hope."
Interestingly enough, the band's 1974 debut and their 1976 follow-up Sad Wings of Destiny were owned by the band's original label, Gull Records, for nearly 50 years, as the band broke their contract with the label to move to CBS Records in 1977. Because of that, they were unable to do anything with the music from those albums as they were not the rights holders.
However, Gull sold the masters and publishing to Reach Music and Exciter Records in partnership with the band in 2022, which allowed the band's longtime producer, Tom Allom, to oversee the remixing of Rocka Rolla that was released for the album's major milestone anniversary. Allom will also oversee the remixing of Sad Wings of Destiny for an upcoming 50th anniversary rerelease.

'Little House on the Prairie' star admits it was 'horrible' dating Rob Lowe during his heartthrob era

Melissa Gilbert is reflecting on her past love life. During an appearance on the "I Choose Me With Jennie Garth" podcast, the "Little House on the Prairie" star got candid about navigating fame from a young age and explained how dating Rob Lowe impacted her view on relationships moving forward. "I guess looking back on those six years, I mean, I was such a baby when Rob and I were together," said Gilbert, who dated Lowe on and off from when she was 17 to 23. "It was very tumultuous. I felt like a bit of an old sage in the business at that point because I'd been doing it for so long. And I was still on 'Little House on the Prairie' when we met, and it had already been years, and he was sort of starting out." "He'd done a little bit of television. And so I was able to sort of sit back and watch this meteoric rise happen. I don't think I was prepared for the stuff that came with it, necessarily. I was prepared for all of having to go to premieres and things and award shows and all of that, but I wasn't prepared for the fandom and, frankly, the girls." "I always thought that every girl and woman was my sister. We're sisters, but it was not evident at all when Rob and I were a couple. I mean, it was like I didn't exist. They just pushed right past me and stuck phone numbers in his pockets and stuff." Gilbert admitted that period of her life was difficult. "To say it was disconcerting is doing it a big disservice," she said. "It was hard and horrible." A representative for Lowe did not immediately respond to Fox News Digital's request for comment. Despite the challenges, Gilbert said the relationship helped her learn a lot about desires when it came to finding love. "I think I learned a lot about what didn't work for me, actually, and what I wouldn't stand for later on," she said. "They're hard because they usually are born of heartbreak and angst, but those are really valuable and important lessons… We had some really, really, really fun times." Last year, Gilbert - who landed the role of Laura Ingalls Wilder at the age of 9 - opened up about her decision to leave Hollywood. "All of the pressures, I faced all of them," Gilbert explained to People magazine at the time. "When you live in Los Angeles, it's like living at the mall when you work at the mall. Literally, everyone is in the business. When you walk into a restaurant, every head turns to see who walked in. Everybody's always looking, curious, competing and that's a really difficult thing, especially for a female actor. It puts a lot of pressure on staying thin and staying young, and really it makes it hard to feel comfortable in one's own skin, because [of] the aging process." "No matter how much we push it downstream, it's inevitable," she continued. "So are you going to age comfortably and happily? Are you going to fight it, be unhealthy and feel like there's something wrong with you for aging and that you're defective because you've gotten older?" Gilbert and her husband, actor Timothy Busfield, moved to Michigan in 2013. The actress spent the next few years without Botox or facial fillers. She even had her breast implants removed in 2015. The 60-year-old film producer emphasized aging is a "blessing." "I had to get out of there [L.A.], because it felt like I was not being authentically myself," she told People. "In the five years that I was in Michigan, all of that stopped. … I stopped everything and just focused on being as physically and emotionally healthy as I could. And I think that shows, 'Yes, I'm aging, but it's not a curse — it's a blessing.'"

Alice Cooper on reuniting with band after 50 years, new memoir and teaching Bible study

The hotel room is a combination of drab green and beige, but Alice Cooper is a vision in black. Sitting regally on a couch in his quarters while on tour in Germany, Cooper smiles often. His long black hair is combed back and his over-ear headphones on, fitting for the radio pro that he is in addition to his 50-plus-year career in music as a pioneering shock rocker. Cooper is eager to talk about 'The Revenge of Alice Cooper,' the first new album in more than five decades from The Alice Cooper Group. Yes, for the uninitiated, those early '70s anthems of rebellion – 'School's Out,' 'I'm Eighteen,' 'Billion Dollar Babies' among them – are the work of the Group: Cooper (initially using his real name, Vincent Furnier); guitarist Michael Bruce; bassist Dennis Dunaway; drummer Neal Smith and guitarist Glen Buxton. But the end of The Alice Cooper Group with 1973's 'Muscle of Love' album and the beginning of Alice Cooper, who legally changed his name as a solo star, just two years later with 'Welcome to My Nightmare,' blurred the distinction. Now, the original band is back with 'The Revenge of Alice Cooper,' 14 heavy-hitting songs including 'Black Mamba,' 'Wild Ones' and 'Up All Night,' that snarl and thunder far beyond expectations for guys approaching 80. Even Buxton, who died in 1997, lives on through a technological assist on the track, 'What Happened To You.' The engaging Cooper, 77 – on tour now and again this fall with Judas Priest – reminisced about playing with his old friends, shared some details about his upcoming memoir and expressed his appreciation about this year's induction into the Radio Hall of Fame. More: Surprise! Johnny Depp joins Alice Cooper for Ozzy Osbourne tribute Question: So for what, exactly, is The Alice Cooper Group seeking revenge? Alice Cooper: We were always the underdogs. The press said this band will last for one year, they're great onstage but not good musicians. Then we had all these platinum albums. There is no stage involved there. So they had to admit, we have to put up with these guys … The revenge is that 50 years later we do an album and none of us knew what this was going to be and it turned out we made a really good 1975-type record. We didn't break up with bad blood. We didn't divorce. We just separated and were best friends and my career went on and on and they all made money when I released an album and the back catalog sold (laughs). Did you record the album the old-fashioned way, with everyone in the same room at the same time? Yes. Why not show out the band? When we got together, it just jelled. The whole album is dedicated to Glen. He was everyone's favorite guy. And then we had (The Doors guitarist) Robby Krieger on 'Black Mamba.' He was the perfect guy for that song. And our (other guitarist) Gyasi Heus, who said he learned from Glen, he just killed it. How did you get Glen's guitar solo on 'What Happened To You'? Dennis Dunaway, who is my oldest friend, never threw anything away. He had tapes of us rehearsing in our parents' living room when we were 15 and also tapes of us writing songs that never quite made it. We took a Glen guitar part and isolated it and wrote a song around it so we could have him on the album. With technology now you can do that. I forgot how much fun it was to work with the original band, how funny they were. I was shocked at how well Neal and Dennis played. They played every bit as well as back in the day. Congrats on the nomination for the Radio Hall of Fame. Did you ever think you'd parlay a career as a rock star into a side gig as a broadcaster ('Alice's Attic' is syndicated around the country)? Radio has always been part of my life. Dick Clark once asked me 23 years ago if I had a radio show what would it be … and I said I would take it back to 1968 when DJs played what they want to play. He said, let's see if it works. And 22 years later, it's still working! (Cooper relaunched his original 'Nights with Alice Cooper' as 'Alice's Attic' in 2024.) More: My Chemical Romance announce 2025 tour with Alice Cooper, Devo: Tickets, dates, more You play a lot of classic rock bands on "Alice's Attic" (The Doors, Styx, Aerosmith, Led Zeppelin). Do you worry about the existence of rock bands in the future? We were in the golden age. If a label wanted you, you got signed for 15 albums and they would support your band until you could pay them back. Young bands don't have that support so I can understand how a young band can't survive right now. But the good point is, when we started, rock(ers) were the kids not invited to the party, the outsiders. Now it's getting back to that and young bands are in garages and playing clubs and guitar-driven rock 'n' roll. It's been a minute since your 2007 book 'Golf Addict' came out. Would you do a sequel? It's being written right now, more the classic story about who I am, how I became Alice, all the things about my family and coming from a Christian background. I was the prodigal son and went as far away as you could. Now I occasionally teach Bible study Wednesday mornings in Phoenix. Everything about me and the band was about coming out of the ashes and somehow winning even when you weren't expected to.
