Among on-ground victims of Ahmedabad air crash, couple heading home from Aadhaar centre
On June 12, Meghaninagar residents Chetnaba (39) and her husband, 42-year-old Ranbirsinh Chavda, left home to get their Aadhaar card updated at the nearby municipal office.
Soon after, as the news of a plane crashing in the area began flashing in, the first instinct of the couple's family was to call them. As their phones were found switched off, the anxiety grew.
When frantic searches at the Civil hospital in Asarwa and Sola hospital yielded no results, a family member decided to give their sample for DNA testing.
'The next day, we reached the crash site looking for some information. The police deployed there showed us a photo of a half-burnt Aadhaar card which was found at the site. It had Chetnaba's photo and name,' Kiritsinh Chavda, elder brother of Ranbirsinh, told The Indian Express. Soon, the scooter that Chetnaba and Ranjitsinh were travelling in was also found in a charred state.
The family still didn't lose hope. But as DNA test reports came in on Wednesday, their worst fears were confirmed – Chetnaba and Ranjitsinh were among the victims of the air crash.
The couple was cremated at the crematorium in Chamunda.
The family, a native of Varsoda village in Mansa taluka of Gandhinagar district, had been living in Meghaninagar for years. They were parents to a 19-year-old daughter and a son, 8. The daughter got married last year. Ranbirsinh worked at a hotel near the airport and was provided with an electric GPS-enabled two-wheeler by his employer.
It was this feature of the vehicle that helped the family members identify the couple's last location.
'When we enquired with the hotel, the last location of the scooter was found at the crash site. The last location of the mobile phone was also the same. But still, we were hopeful that they were alive and lying injured at some hospital. But later, we found the partially burnt green number plate and a completely charred scooter from the site,' said Kiritsinh.
On Wednesday, along with their mortal remains, the jewellery of the couple was returned to the family.

Supreme Court sets aside Madras HC order directing arrest of TN police officer in abduction case
The Supreme Court on Thursday set aside a Madras High Court order directing the arrest of Tamil Nadu Additional Director General of Police HM Jayaram in a case pertaining to the abduction of a 17-year-old boy, Live Law reported. The top court also transferred the investigation in the case to the state's Crime Branch-Criminal Investigation Department. The Tamil Nadu government agreed to it. Further, the Supreme Court urged the chief justice of the Madras High Court to transfer matters related to the abduction to a bench different from the one hearing Jayaram's case, The Indian Express reported. The Madras High Court had on June 16 ordered Jayaram's arrest in a kidnapping case that also named Kilvaithinakuppam MLA Poovai M Jagan Moorthy as a suspect. The police officer claimed that he was subsequently taken into custody for about 24 hours, while the state government maintained that he had merely joined the investigation. The case stems from a police complaint filed by one Lakshmi, whose elder son married a woman from Theni district against the wishes of her family. Fearing retaliation, the couple went into hiding. In a bid to trace them, members of the woman's family, with the help of hired men, allegedly abducted Lakshmi's younger son from their home. The 17-year-old boy was later found abandoned near a hotel with visible injuries. During the investigation, the police discovered that an official vehicle linked to Jayaram was allegedly used in the abduction. The woman's family had reportedly also sought help from Moorthy. The MLA is accused of being involved in the abduction and is also alleged to have later prevented the police from questioning him by having party supporters gather around his residence. On Wednesday, the Supreme Court had described the High Court order directing Jayaram's arrest as shocking. 'I have been a judge for 18 years,' Bhuyan had said. 'I never knew I had this power [to direct arrest].' The Supreme Court then asked the Tamil Nadu government why the officer was suspended if he was not arrested. On Thursday, lawyer Siddharth Dave, representing the Tamil Nadu government, said that Jayaram was not suspended because of the High Court order, The Indian Express reported. He said that the official was suspended as per the provisions of the All India Services (Discipline and Appeal) Rules, 1969, under which a civil servant against whom a criminal inquiry is pending can be suspended.

Man shot dead outside police station in Ghaziabad; accused on the run
A 27-year-old man was allegedly shot dead outside a police station in Ghaziabad following an altercation between two groups late Wednesday. The police said the incident occurred when one of the groups reached the police station to file a complaint after some people fired at their house. Surendra Nath Tiwari, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Rural), said they received information at around 11.45 pm at the Muradnagar Police Station that some people had fired at Ravindra Sharma's house in Milak Rawli village. 'On this information, a team of police was immediately rushed to the spot, and carried a search operation to arrest the accused, Monty,' said Tiwari. Tiwari said the team searched his house but did not find him there. 'After this, Ravindra Sharma and his family members came to the police station and were in the process of registering an FIR. His family members and some of his acquaintances were on the road outside the police station. They saw accused Monty and his partner Ajay on the other side of the road, and tried to stop him,' said the DCP. According to the police, Monty fired at these people, and Ravindra Sharma's son Ravi Sharma received a bullet injury. 'He was taken to the District hospital in Ghaziabad, where the doctor declared him dead,' said the DCP. Tiwari told The Indian Express that the police received a complaint from Ravindra Sharma, and have registered a case of murder. 'We are taking all the necessary legal action, and have sent the body for post-mortem. Teams have been formed. Continuous efforts are being made for the arrest. Soon arrest will be made and necessary legal action will be taken,' said Tiwari. Tamil Nadu's pregnancy registration system exposes Aadhaar tampering to hide child marriages in Krishnagiri
Six teenage mothers using tampered Aadhaar cards to show a higher age were discovered, thanks to the State government's Pregnancy and Infant Cohort Monitoring and Evaluation (PICME) system in Denkanikottai. On Wednesday, a 17-year-old girl was intercepted by Collector C. Dinesh Kumar at the Comprehensive Emergency Obstetric and Newborn Care (CEmONC) centre at the government hospital. He felt she looked younger, though she insisted she was 18. 'She didn't look 18. When I checked her ID, I noticed that she was 17 in March, when she got married, and was now two-months pregnant. An entry was made and a case under the Child Marriage Act and the POCSO Act will be registered,' he said. The Collector's visit followed the detection of six persons as underage mothers though their Aadhaar cards showed a different date of birth. The PICME portal registers and tracks pregnancies to prevent infant and maternal deaths, and to bring all births into the institutional delivery system. PICME registration is mandatory to get a birth certificate. According to Deputy Director of Health Services G. Ramesh Kumar, there had been six cases of underage mothers from Kelamangalam block. Two of them were carrying Aadhaar cards with dates of birth that did not match the ones shown on their Aadhaar ID on the UIDAI portal. Recently, a 29-year-old man produced a tampered Aadhaar card for his wife, showing her age as 19, while the seeded Aadhaar identification mentioned her age as 14. Three Internet centres had abetted the forgery. New system The Health Department had since alerted the Tahsildar and the Collector. 'Tampering was possible in the earlier system, where the PICME portal was manually fed using the ID produced by the mother. But on PICME 3.0, which is linked to the UIDAI portal, tampering is impossible,' Dr. Ramesh said. Once the Aadhaar number is keyed in, it will reveal all the details. 'An OTP is sent to the phone number seeded to the Aadhaar number, without which we cannot proceed into the PICME portal,' said Sacharita, Block Medical Officer, Thally. 'I have apprised the UIDAI too about this, and complaints have been lodged against those Internet/photocopy centres and the Aadhaar cardholders, spouses and their families. We are registering cases invoking both the Child Marriage Act and the POCSO Act,' the officer added. Last month, a man and his wife ended their lives after a case was registered against them for child marriage. Their 17-year-old daughter was married off to her maternal uncle, became pregnant, and underwent an abortion. 'She had attempted suicide, and the private hospital where she was admitted alerted us. The girl was from a community we focus on in Bargur, because it has the highest incidence of teen marriages. Cases were registered against both families. That is how stringent we are in dealing with child marriages,' the Collector said. Typically, any teenage pregnancy that comes into the hospital system for the mandatory PICME registration is routed through an AR entry at the hospital, where the police is intimated and a case is registered. The Health Department has been quietly intimating the police, and POCSO cases are being registered, Dr. Ramesh Kumar said. 'We've had experience of girls running off to Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh once the police get involved and then, tracking the pregnancies becomes difficult. It could also result in maternal mortality. So, we requested the police to wait till the mothers give birth to take action against their husbands and families,' he added. Between April 2024 and March 2025, a total of 545 cases of child marriage were registered, which included migrant women. This, according to Dr. Ramesh Kumar, is probably the lowest in western Tamil Nadu, according to PICME data. The highest number of child marriages are reported in Kaveripattinam, Bargur, Shoolagiri, and Kelamangalam in Krishnagiri district.
