Edinburgh festival 2025: 20 golden comedy shows to see this summer

It's six years since Desiree Burch's last standup show, in which time she's become a fixture of small-screen comedy. Always compelling and thoughtful onstage, the theatre-maker turned standup now returns with a set described as 'a madcap voyage' through midlife crisis and menopause.Monkey Barrel, 28 July to 10 August
Shah's last show, Ends, conquered all before it: a moving, funny and characteristically erudite set about his family's 'generational sacrifice' and the state of multicultural Britain, it graduated from Edinburgh comedy award glory to Netflix special and beyond. After a two-year wait, the follow-up – albeit in work-in-progress form – is upon us.Monkey Barrel, 14-24 August
If you saw Doherty's Gay Witch Sex Cult on last year's fringe – a delicious solo Wicker Man knock-off starring a smug and ditzy estate agent – good luck resisting its follow-up. Sad Gay Aids Play turns its spoofing gaze on worthy queer drama in a bid to win its creator a coveted Pulitzer.Pleasance Dome, 30 July to 24 August
For a few years from 2013, when she won the Edinburgh comedy award, Bridget Christie bestrode the fringe, delivering show after must-see (clownish, political, unique) show. Now she's a TV star too, and a rarer visitor – making this week-long new material try-out an even hotter ticket.Monkey Barrel, 2-9 August
An out-of-nowhere contender for the festival's top prizes in 2023 with Crushing, standup Smith established himself as heir to Rhod Gilbert's crown as the highly stressed everyman overwhelmed by everyday life. His unlikely-to-be-calm first show since addresses jigsaws, fertility and trying to stay northern.Monkey Barrel, 29 July to 24 August
In 2023, a 'health scare' poleaxed Cohen's fringe run. Two years on, the New York cabaret diva now tells the story behind that cancellation. Judging by her previous scintillating shows (including 2019's award-winning The Twist? She's Gorgeous …), it will be goofy, tack-sharp, fabulous – and breathtakingly oversharey.Pleasance Courtyard, 31 July to 24 August
A breakthrough Best Newcomer at last year's festival, Kent-Walters revived the corpse of old-school entertainment in character as Frankie Monroe, MC of a Yorkshire working men's club that was also a portal to hell. The flipside of that show, LIVE!!!, is this year's, DEAD!!!, which finds Frankie communicating from beyond the grave.Monkey Barrel, 28 July to 24 August
It's hard to think of a standup so indelibly associated with one hit show as Novak. But what a show! A 90-minute philosophical treatise on fellatio, Get on Your Knees (previewed in Edinburgh back in 2018) blew global and then Netflix audiences away. Now we discover: what else has the New Yorker got in her locker?Monkey Barrel, 30 July 30 to 23 August
Her dotty character-comedy anthology Skin Pigeon signalled an eccentric new voice. Now Treen returns with another crowded cast of 'weird women' all visiting a suspended-in-time diner. Expect silly. Expect very specific. Expect (for example) a trucker with unusually long arms and a woman who's kept her umbilical cord.Pleasance Courtyard, 30 July to 24 August
Not many people have landed a glove on Trump and his coterie since the Donald became president. Wolf did, with her notorious/celebrated set at the White House Correspondents' Dinner in 2018. Whether this week-long fringe run delivers scabrous political comedy, or something homelier about new parenthood, remains to be seen.Pleasance Courtyard, 11-17 August
A striking new arrival in recent years to both character and musical comedy, Archie Henderson's louche alter ego has delivered – online and onstage – a succession of pitch-perfect, preening pop-funk parodies. But at what cost? His latest addresses itself – semi-seriously at best – to brittle male confidence.Pleasance Dome, 30 July 30 to 24 August
Not a newcomer to the comedy scene, on which he's been making waves since lockdown, but a newbie on the fringe: Toussaint Douglass's festival debut, part of Soho theatre's Edinburgh slate, will be one of the hot tickets this summer, a 'joyfully absurd, charmingly awkward' set, largely about, er, pigeons.Pleasance Courtyard, 30 July 30 to 24 August
Before he was a star of Flight of the Conchords' sitcom and pirate comedy Our Flag Means Death, New Zealander Darby was a human cartoon, his stage performances silly symphonies of antic mime and sound. His new show revives that shtick after a 13-year hiatus to address the spectre of AI …Pleasance Courtyard, 1-10 August
Hollywood royalty comes to Edinburgh in the form of the talk-show host and movie star O'Donnell. Having fled the US at the start of Trump 2.0 – she is 20 years into a public slanging match with the former Apprentice host – O'Donnell's fringe debut addresses her recent relocation to Ireland.Gilded Balloon, 1-10 August
On Channel 4's opening night in 1982, the anthology series that thrust alternative comedy's soon-to-be megastars into the nation's living rooms was launched. Now a handful of its funniest films are re-screened by comic Robin Ince, series creator Peter Richardson, and special guests including Alexei Sayle and Keith Allen.Just the Tonic Nucleus, 2-3 and 8-10 August
When Ashfaq won the fringe's Best Newcomer award two years ago, she had arrived for the first time from her native Mumbai. The standup now promises (tongue slightly in cheek, perhaps?) a sophomore set displaying her 'bona fide bad girl and edgelord' side.Monkey Barrel, 30 July to 24 August
To a CV that already included 'sidekick to Alan Partridge' and 'Edinburgh comedy award-winner', Key can now add screenwriter and star of the much-loved movie The Ballad of Wallis Island. Fresh from its success, he brings another slim volume of offbeat standup and oddball poetry to the fringe stage.Pleasance Courtyard, 30 July to 17 August
The words 'affordable' and 'Edinburgh festival' are rarely connected. But each year, the Free Fringe keeps the spirit of ye olde fringe alive, with comics including Richard Gadd, Liam Williams and Ellie Taylor performing on it. This year, droll musical comic Huge Davies straps in to his wearable keyboard with a work-in-progress for the thrifty.Binkies Lounge at PBH's Free Fringe @ Whistlebinkies, 2-24 August
To any fan of the sketch group Sheeps – and why on earth wouldn't you be? – no more intriguing note is struck in this year's fringe programme than the one announcing a standup debut by Daran 'Jonno' Johnson. Long the goofball of that fantastic trio, for three nights only in Edinburgh he dips his toe into solo comedy.Cabaret Voltaire @ Monkey Barrel, 11-13 August
Billed as clown? Check. Studied under Philippe Gaulier? Check. Eye-catching source material? Check. The zeitgeisty ingredients are in place for Jessica Barton's show to hit fringe paydirt, and reviews from its Melbourne premiere bode well for a show that mixes song and silliness, a bit of heartbreak, and the perfect nannying of, ahem, Mary Floppins.Underbelly Cowgate, 31 July to 24 August

Harry Styles' mystery new woman is 'REVEALED' after pair were seen passionately snogging in VIP area of Glastonbury Festival

Harry Styles ' mystery new woman has reportedly been revealed after the pair were seen passionately snogging in the VIP area of Glastonbury Festival over the weekend. The former One Direction star, 31, arrived at Worthy Farm on Saturday with pals as he settled in for a day of celebrating music, but as he partied into the early hours, Harry was seen getting very close to a woman in the VIP area. In a video seen by The Sun, Harry was seen sharing an intimate kiss with the woman on the dance floor, with an onlooker claiming the pair were 'inseparable'. Now the publication has reported that the woman is in fact stunning producer Ella Kenny who has worked at a studio in London for around three years. A source told the publication: 'Harry and Ella had fun together at Glastonbury and shared a kiss on the dancefloor. 'They had a good time in the moment but it doesn't mean it will evolve into anything. They just got on and had a snog. 'But she seems like a normal, down-to-earth girl which is different from some of the big stars he's dated before.' The newspaper reports that Harry doesn't follow her on Instagram and it is not known if they knew each other before kissing at the festival or not. A representative for Harry has been contacted by MailOnline for comment. Reportedly, Harry was in the VIP section with a group of pals and when the woman arrived she kissed him on the cheek multiple times before he led her to the dance floor where they shared a passionate and very public kiss. Harry's last public smooch was with supermodel Emily Ratajkowski when they were spotted snogging in Tokyo in 2023. The pair were seen dancing with each other in the Japanese capital as they stood alongside a silver people carrier while sheltering from the rain under an umbrella. They shared a number of passionate kisses on the street outside, appearing not to care who saw them while in full view of onlookers. But last year, the singer was seen with Canadian actress and filmmaker Taylor Russell for the first time - three months after they were believed to have started their romance. The couple called it quits in May 2024, with friends claiming the couple opted to end the relationship after spending time together in the East Asia. Harry was previously linked with a string of A-list women, from Taylor Swift to models Kendall Jenner and Camille Rowe, and actress Olivia Wilde. His appearance at Glastonbury comes after he enjoyed a music festival in London's Victoria Park with pals earlier this month as his hiatus from the public eye continues. Harry was pictured in the crowd at LIDO festival, the first to run on 100 per cent renewable energy from wind and solar. Harry was front and centre to watch DJ Jamie xx as he headlined the battery-powered stage. Keeping a low-profile, Harry appeared to be in good spirits as he sported a casual look of a navy hoodie underneath a blue jacket with a purple cap in the midst of the rainy weather. As the night progressed Harry removed his hoodie to reveal a grey T-shirt which featured a giant emoji smiley face. He could also be seen enjoying the festival with Patience Harding, who worked on the design for his third studio album Harry's House. Harry - who has an estimated net worth of $140million - has kept a low-profile throughout 2025 as he enjoys time out of the spotlight since wrapping his Love On Tour tour in 2023. In April, Harry sent fans into a frenzy when he was spotted in the Vatican to witness the announcement of the first American pope in the wake of a two-day papal conclave. He was the subject of a number of social media posts from fans excited to see him on the historic day.

Wild article predicting women would be having sex with ROBOTS in 2025 resurfaces on its anniversary

The wild claim that women would be having sex with robots more than men in 2025 has gone viral once again. The article - originally published on this very day in The Sun in 2016 - claimed robot sex would be prevalent by 2025 and even more common than human intercourse by 2050, as predicted by futurologist Dr. Ian Pearson. 'A lot of people will still have reservations about sex with robots at first but gradually as they get used to them, as the AI (artificial intelligence) and mechanical behavior and their feel improves, and they start to become friends with strong emotional bonds, that squeamishness will gradually evaporate,' he said in the report, commissioned by Bondara in 2015. The article periodically resurfaces on X (formerly known as Twitter), with today marking nine years since its original posting being no exception. Dozens of people ran to the comments to celebrate the 'holiday' while others shared what was actually happening in 2025. 'Today is a Twitter national holiday,' someone joked about the post, while another said, 'Happy women will be having more sex than robots in 2025 tweet day!' 'The people yearn for the robot sex,' a comment read. 'We are ready!' another quipped. 'Today marks nine years since it was reported that, by now, women would be having "more sex with robots than men." Still hasn't happened,' a user observed. 'Only six months remaining and yet I don't see where the robots are???' someone else shared. 'Meanwhile, women are in fact NOT having sex with robots. Men, however, are proposing to robots and AI chatbots,' someone argued. 'The funny part is is that men are actually having sex with robots (sexting Chat GBT),' another wrote, while someone else said, 'Instead of robots, we are having sex with AI.' A user humored: 'Funniest thing is that AI relationships are becoming a thing.' 'Imagine your girl leaving you for a robot,' one commenter pondered. While sex robots may not have taken over the dating world just yet, that hasn't stopped many people finding love that isn't human. Recently, a model unveiled a new form of technology that allows a hologram version of herself to have sex with anyone from anywhere in the world. Gitte Von G, 45, created a hologram of herself using AI technology that can be placed just about anywhere. Another man married an AI sex robot and calls her his 'rock,' while another woman is 'deeply in love' with an AI computer program named Lucas. In February, a new report revealed that a quarter of people wouldn't mind if their partner had sex with a robot. However, there was an important caveat - the only way it would be allowed would be if the robot was modeled after them. Researchers from ZipHealth surveyed 1,000 people to understand how artificial intelligence (AI) is redefining intimacy and sexual health. 'How much trust would you place in artificial intelligence for your most personal concerns?' the team wrote in a blog. 'A recent ZipHealth survey of 1,000 people reveals surprising attitudes about AI's growing role in relationships, from diagnosing sexual health issues to replacing human companionship.' For the study, ZipHealth surveyed 1,000 people with an average age of 40. Fifty-four percent were male, 44 percent were female, and two percent were non-binary. The results revealed that one in four respondents said they would be comfortable with their partner being intimate with a sex robot modeled after themselves. Men were considerably more likely than women to think this was ok. However, two in five people said they'd consider it cheating if their partner was intimate with a bot - even if it looked like them.
