New Yorkers rise up over pink phallic sculpture that 'squirts' from its top

Daily Maila day ago
A 10ft-tall phallic-shaped sculpture that squirts liquid from its top has shocked and disgusted New Yorkers.
The 'Foot Fountain (pink)' has a flesh-colored foot at its base and features several tongue-protruding adornments.
It is topped by a sprinkler that spouts water when passersby pedal on a nearby machine.
It is slated to grace Manhattan's High Line Park through May 2026 - but viewers have so far reacted with a mix of shock and disgust.
'This is disturbing,' one person responded to an Instagram post by the park promoting the piece.
'Is this a joke?' another asked.
'Um. That doesn't look like a foot,' a third chimed in.
'I'm thinking the "foot" part of this installation was a last-minute creative decision,' another joked.
One user commented on X: 'They knew what they were doing with this...
'It mimics a penis with warts, shooting semen out the top... they added the foot because well ya know can't legit have it only be a giant pink d*ck.
'Imagine the children's thoughts passing on by.'
Another simply said: 'Oh it's a squirting c*ck statue.'
The artist behind the piece, Mika Rottenberg, has described her work as 'an overindulgent creature from my drawings.'
'It first appeared as a small sculpture while I was doing some craft work with my daughter during the pandemic,' she said in a statement on the High Line's website.
The Argentine-born artist explained that the piece was originally conceived for a museum in Switzerland to work as irrigation fountain to water flowers.
'Here on the High Line, instead of nurturing the well-tended gardens, I thought it should nurture and cool passersby on hot days, and share some of its overenthusiastic spirit!' she said.
The works of Rottenberg, who was born in Buenos Aires and lives in Manhattan, have been featured at museums and galleries around the world.
This isn't the first time the High Line has featured unique art.
Last summer it debuted a 16ft pigeon in the same place where Rottenberg's sculpture now stands.
The pigeon was meant to challenge the grandeur of traditional monuments that celebrate significant historical figures in the city.
The name and size of the bird was also meant to poke fun at the 'the typical power dynamic between bird and human' as it towered over pedestrians and drivers.
In his sculpture description, Ivan Argote explained that the pigeon represents the city's evolution and confronts its viewers with the constantly changing relationship with the natural world and its inhabitants.

Love Island hunk in talks for spin-off show just weeks after split – and it will be his fourth villa appearance

A LOVE Island hunk is in talks for one of the franchise's spin-off shows, just weeks after splitting from his villa girlfriend. Gearing up for a FOURTH villa appearance, Casey O'Gorman is in talks for Love Island Games after winning All Stars at the start of 2025. 5 Fresh from his split from Gabby Allen, whom he won this year's season of All Stars with, Casey could soon be getting pulses racing with a new cast of Islanders, and maybe even falling in love all over again. A TV insider tells The Sun: "Bosses in the US have approached Casey's team as they are keen for him to take part in the upcoming second season of Love Island Games. "They always take people from international versions of the show, and they think Casey would be perfect as he's done the UK version three times so he's a very familiar face. "He's also recently split from Gabby Allen, so now is the ideal time for him to do it as Casey rarely stays single for long." The Sun has contacted a representative for Casey for comment. Back in May The Sun revealed the couple had called time on their romance three months after winning Love Island 's spin-off show All Stars. They then said in a joint statement: "After much thoughtful consideration, Gabby and Casey have decided to go their separate ways romantically. "This decision was mutual, and they both remain on good terms as friends with a shared respect for each other." Gabby added: "Gabby is grateful for the memories they've created together and wishes Casey nothing but the best as they both move forward on their individual journeys. She's excited for what the future holds." At the time, a source told The Sun: "Both have confided in quite a few friends about this and so it's not really a secret in their circles, but they've made the decision to part ways this week." Axed Love Island star Alima reveals hidden romance with another Islander They added: "They had a really good relationship and enjoyed each others' time but the reality is that they are focusing on different things and they both have realised that. "Neither of them have parted ways badly but they just knew it wasn't going to work anymore." Gabby appeared on Love Island: After Sun recently, where she briefly spoke about her split from Casey. The blonde beauty appeared on the show, which is hosted by Maya Jama, with her All Stars pal Kaz Crossley. Casey O'Gorman's love interests Lea Broc – Casey dated Lea for three years up until 2022. It was later claimed that he had cheated on the French influencer. Claudia Forgarty – Casey was coupled up with Claudia on the show in 2023 but ditched her when a new bombshell arrived. Rosie Seabrook – Casey left the villa with Rosie and they briefly dated in the real world before calling it quits. Georgia Harrison – The hunk had a fling with Georgia before his second stint on the show. It ended badly between them when she famously told him she had seen his late grandfather. Joanna Chimonides – Casey was briefly couple up with on All Stars series one. Kaz Kamwi – Kaz was another short lived romance on All Stars. Eve Gale - Casey ended up leaving the villa with Eve but there romance was also not to last. Tina Stinnes – Casey and Tina slept together when they appeared on Made In Chelsea together. When host Maya spoke to the stunning former Islanders, Gabby got grilled about her split from Casey. Maya chatted to the girls, turned to Gabby and said: "Gabby, what happened with you and Casey?" "How long have we got?" Gabby joked. She then said: "You know what, not really that much to report." Gabby noted how she and Casey were at "very different stages in our lives". Kaz then interjected when she said: "Casey he's a lovely boy, but emphasis on boy," seemingly throwing shade at her pal's ex. "I love Gabby, but a relationship, you just need a bit more depth. "We're looking for our husbands," she concluded. 5 5

Hidden Master: The Legacy of George Platt Lynes review – eye-opening snapshot of New York's queer scene

George Platt Lynes was an American photographer who lived in Paris in the 1920s and then mostly in New York City for the rest of his life; he died in 1955. A gay man who was very out by the standards of the times, he was right in the middle of the one of the most flamboyant bohemian queer scenes of the period. And, man, did he have fun, shagging up a storm and taking nude pictures of beautiful men and women (but mostly men) when he wasn't earning work shooting fashion spreads for Vogue magazine. This documentary, directed by Sam Shahid, introduces his life and work in a deeply respectful, straightforward way, splicing in hundreds of examples of his mostly black-and-white pictures with curators, admirers and some surviving friends and acquaintances. Notable interviewees include portrait artist Don Bachardy, and the painter Bernard Perlin, seen in archive footage given he died in 2014, who was a very close friend of Platt Lynes and the executor of his artistic estate. Like so many other documentaries about dead artists that require cooperation from the deceased's estate, this sometimes gets a little hyperbolic about its subject's talent. Which is not to say that Lynes' work isn't worth exploring and celebrating, not only for its aesthetic merits but also for the way it captures a specific time and place. His commercial work was classical and elegant, tinged with a surrealism he learned first hand from Man Ray himself. His nudes and frankly erotic material are gorgeously sensual with a chilly, sculptural quality whose influence can be traced in later photographers of male nudes like Robert Mapplethorpe. Meanwhile, the snapshot the film offers of New York's queer scene in the 1940s and 50s – a shimmering fever dream of orgiastic (literally) cocktail parties, fuelled by passion and pomp – is an eye-opening delight. Lynes himself was in a long-running menage a trois with curator Monroe Wheeler and writer Glenway Wescott well before the word polyamorous was even coined, let alone 'throuple'. He was also very close to such figures as Gertrude Stein, who scolded him like a granny for dropping out of university, and Christopher Isherwood among others. His encounter with sexologist Alfred Kinsey (which became a friendship) resulted in the Kinsey Institute holding a significant chunk of Lynes' work, including a box marked 'private' that the curators teasingly insist they've never looked in out of respect for Lynes. The latter emerges as an irrepressibly charming figure, although perhaps not without a sinister, manipulative side that the film never really delves into. Hidden Master: The Legacy of George Platt Lynes is in UK cinemas from 11 July.
