The Scariest Thing in Alien: Earth Isn't the Xenomorphs. It's Tech Bros

Bloomberg8 hours ago
Watch enough of the Alien franchise and you'll realize this: The giant drooling monsters are not the real villains. Sure, they're grotesque parasites that kill humans in elaborate, horrific ways. But the true fiend is the company pulling the strings.
Ridley Scott's seminal 1979 film, Alien, was essentially about blue-collar workers who are sent on a suicide mission by a faceless conglomerate that doesn't give a hoot about its employees. James Cameron's equally beloved sequel, Aliens, put a 1980s spin on that concept, giving us a villain in the form of a greedy middle manager, played by Paul Reiser, who wants to monetize the acid-blooded xenomorphs as weapons of mass destruction. Last year's Alien: Romulus really drove the point home, focusing on a group of young people desperate to escape their indentured servitude in a rain-shrouded mining colony.
Now, the FX television series Alien: Earth, out Aug. 12, doubles down on the class warfare.

Jordan Chiles shows off sculpted figure in jaw-dropping dress at 2025 ESPYs

Jordan Chiles set fire to the red carpet at the 2025 ESPYs with a dress that quickly drew everyone's attention on Instagram and other socials. The 24-year-old Olympic gymnast showed up in a unique beige mini dress that highlighted her sculpted build and then flared out with a playful shape. There was texture to the fabric and the neckline plunged deep. It had some strategic cutouts that helped make it one of the most talked-about fits of the evening. Chiles is known for her powerful floor routines and confident stage presence and she's exactly the same at an event like the ESPYs. The look captured attention on Twitter and in her Instagram update from Thursday, July 18, where she shared several shots of the look. At the same time Chiles had her hair slicked back and a pose that showed off her curves. The comments section filled up quickly as usual. Celebs like Taraji P. Henson and Keke Palmer dropped fire emojis and praised the gymnast's look. The SI Swimsuit official account simply said 'SPEECHLESS.' Fans flooded in with everything from admiration to playful confusion over the optical illusion created by the wide skirt. Some joked about her looking like a 'living doll' or 'action figure come to life.' Chiles didn't take home an award this time but she owned the spotlight with a presence of winner. Her appearance came around the same time as the 2025 U.S. Classic which is a major meet she isn't competing in. She's keeping her name in the spotlight even when she's not on the competition floor. Chiles has never been shy about expressing her personality through fashion and this latest moment proves she knows exactly how to work it when everyone's watching. Read More!

James Gunn: Peacemaker Season 2 ‘Revolves Around' a Major Superman Movie Element

The following contains spoilers from James Gunn's movie, now in theaters. A significant plot element from James Gunn's Superman film will factor into Peacemaker Season 2. You may recall that Season 1 of the HBO Max series established that the titular Chris Smith's (John Cena) father Auggie (Robert Patrick) had inside his modest home a door that, using a keypad lock, opened into an incredibly/impossibly vast space dubbed the Quantum Unfolding Storage Area. Auggie used this XXXL area — a pocket universe, if you will — to store his White Dragon gear as well as son Chris' Peacemaker helmets. But in Season 2, it takes on greater significance. As teased in the stinger of the first trailer, Chris, once again in tighty-whiteys, opens a second door within the QUSA and runs into… his doppelgänger. In Gunn's Superman film, supervillain Lex Luthor (Nicholas Hoult) uses a pocket universe that he created to, among other things, host a black site prison. The concept there, Gunn says, is similar to Peacemaker's QUSA, minus some big bugs. 'What the whole season of Peacemaker revolves around' is the idea a pocket universe, Gunn says in Superman post mortem. 'The one in Peacemaker works better,' Gunn notes. 'Lex's version is much jankier.' Gunn says that, as suggested by Peacemaker's doppelgänger in the trailer, the Quantum Unfolding Area allows for multiverse-type twists, though on the DC TV series they're handled 'in a much different way' than we've seen in superhero fare over recent years. 'I think of Peacemaker as more of a high-concept story about one other world,' he explains. 'It's more akin to Philip Roth's [1996 novel] The Counterlife than it is to the third Spider-Man movie [2021's No Way Home]… I love that movie, but it isn't about that. It isn't Deadpool & Wolverine. It's really a very simple, simple story about [Chris Smith's] relationship to this one other world.' Gunn then makes clear that this 'pocket universe' DNA shared by Superman and Peacemaker Season 2 did not dictate John Cena's brief cameo in the big-screen launch of the new DCU. 'He would've been in there no matter what,' asserts the filmmaker. 'I like the idea that he's going on this incendiary talk show, and he's one of these a–holes that would be on that show.' '[The baby] continues to grow healthy and strong each day,' the star said of her little one on the way. 'I'm so excited for Calvin to have a little [sibling]; he sort of understands what's going on but when you ask him about the baby, he says he wants to pet it. So we'll see!' I can't believe I was going to have to wait until November to meet him, and he's here and healthy."
