Liew: Semiconductors, drones to drive Malaysia's transformation
KUALA LUMPUR — Malaysia needs to transition from being primarily a trading nation to becoming a technology-driven country that develops solutions for real-life problems, anchored by the semiconductor industry and integrated with drone technology.
Deputy Minister of Investment, Trade and Industry Liew Chin Tong said the shift is necessary as the world currently faces headwinds in global trade, presenting significant challenges.
He said that drones could be a key enabler of transformation across various sectors of the economy, particularly when linked to Malaysia's semiconductor industry.
'Our mindset should not be just about selling drones. We must begin asking ourselves how we can move from selling drones to applying and using them in new ways.
'Drones can be linked to semiconductor, as Malaysia has a very interesting and sophisticated semiconductor industry,' he said in his keynote address at the DronTech Asia 2025 Soft Launch Ceremony, here, today.
Liew added that drone technology has rapidly evolved to become more efficient and essential, and Malaysia should play an active role in this technological evolution.
Meanwhile, he said a programme such as DroneTech Asia 2025 could serve as a catalyst to inspire the nation to take drone technology more seriously.
DronTech Asia 2025, jointly organised by Aerosea Exhibitions Sdn Bhd and GML Exhibition (Thailand) Co Ltd, will be held at the Malaysia International Trade and Exhibition Centre (MITEC) from Sept 30 to Oct 2, 2025.
Aerosea Exhibitions Sdn Bhd chairman, Tan Sri Asmat Kamaludin, in his opening remarks, said the event will host over 100 participating companies from 15 countries and is expected to receive 5,000 trade visitors.
'DronTech Asia 2025 will present an extensive programme of high-level conferences, technical talks by industry experts, live interactive demonstrations, and showcases of the latest in drone technologies,' he said. — BERNAMA

EPF weighs £1.4bil sale of UK private hospitals
EPF has appointed broker Knight Frank to offer the 12 properties for sale, people with knowledge of the process said. KUALA LUMPUR : EPF is preparing to sell a portfolio of UK private hospitals that are valued at about £1.4 billion (US$1.9 billion). The fund has appointed broker Knight Frank to offer the 12 properties for sale, people with knowledge of the process said. The hospitals, which an EPF-led consortium bought for about £700 million in 2013, are operated by Spire Healthcare Group Plc, the people said, asking not to be identified as the process is private. Representatives for EPF and Knight Frank declined to comment. Healthcare property has seen a flurry of interest this year as investors seek out alternative assets with long-term indexed-linked leases. KKR & Co is vying with Primary Health Properties Plc to buy Assura Plc, a UK landlord that mostly owns doctor surgeries as well as a portfolio of private hospitals that it bought for £500 million last year. Aedifica SA agreed yesterday to buy rival Cofinimmo in a deal that creates a healthcare REIT with a combined gross asset value of more than €12 billion euros (US$13.7 billion). The use of private healthcare in the UK has grown as the country's National Health Service (NHS) struggles to bring down waiting lists that were swollen during the pandemic. A record 4.7 million had private health insurance through their employer in 2023, according to data compiled by the Association of British Insurers last year. The NHS also uses private hospitals to carry out procedures. The state backed healthcare provider spent £2.1 billion in private hospitals last year, according to a report by LaingBuisson. It spent a further £1.5 billion at private clinics. The UK government announced earlier this year that the NHS would use private healthcare to carry out additional appointments, scans and operations in order to reduce waiting times.

Kota Kinabalu: Preparations are underway for Sabah to host the two-day Asean Travel Exchange (ATE) 2025 this month, says State Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Seri Christina Liew. Basically, ATE 2025 is a premier Business 2 Business (B2B) networking event in Sabah, connecting travel trade sellers and regional buyers to foster partnerships and collaborations on June 19 and 20. The Minister said the State Government through the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Environment (KePKAS) will host this inaugural mega tourism event at the Sabah International Convention Centre (SICC). Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor has been invited to officiate at the opening ceremony on June 19. Liew said KePKAS supports the proposal for four organisations to establish strategic partnership with Sabah Tourism Board (STB) in organising ATE 2025. They are the Asean Tourism Association (Aseanta), Federation of Asean Travel Associations (Fata), Malaysian Association of Tour & Travel Agents (Matta), and AirAsia Group. They comprise 125 sellers and 229 buyers,' said Liew after a courtesy call by a delegation from the organisers, recently.
