Emirati youth to sail as traditional sea captains this summer with ADMSA's Nokhatha programme

AMEINAH ALZEYOUDI (ABU DHABI)This summer, Emirati youth will set sail in a unique cultural experience that will see them become captains of traditional wooden boats. The Abu Dhabi Marine Sports Academy has charted a course for the adventure with its 'Nokhatha Abu Dhabi' programme, set to launch on June 30.Through the programme, participants will learn the basics of dhow sailing, navigation, and seamanship. The initiative aims to promote the culture of traditional sailing among the youth and strengthen their connection with the UAE's maritime heritage. It will run for two months and is expected to attract over 200 participants, including sailors and sailing enthusiasts.
'Nokhatha Abu Dhabi is more than just a training programme,' Khalifa Al Suwaidi, Head of the Abu Dhabi Marine Sports Academy, told Aletihad . 'It is a cultural journey that seeks to pass down the rich maritime knowledge inherited from our ancestors to younger generations.' From reading wind patterns and understanding currents to mastering sail handling and dhow leadership, participants will acquire key skills that prepare them for competitive heritage races and potential inclusion in professional marine sports teams in the future.'Through hands-on training in sailing traditional dhows and exploring the secrets of the sea, participants will gain a deeper appreciation of our history and identity,' Al Suwaidi said.Beyond technical skills, the programme instils core values rooted in Emirati maritime tradition, such as teamwork, patience, commitment, and respect for elders, he added.There are life skills to be learned, too – from leadership and discipline to problem –solving in dynamic environments, effective communication, and teamwork.These competencies not only contribute to their sporting success but also shape resilient, responsible individuals capable of meeting academic and professional challenges with confidence.
Aligned with the goals of Year of Community, Nokhatha Abu Dhabi contributes to strengthening social bonds and promoting Emirati values through modern, impactful platforms.

Mohamed Salem Al Dhaheri, Vice Chairman of the UAE Jiu-Jitsu Federation, said: 'Jiu-jitsu in the UAE has proven its excellence and its ability to succeed at every opportunity, supported by the sport's continued growth and the achievements of our national team on both continental and global stages. Our athletes have consistently made the nation proud in regional and international arenas, and today's result is even more significant given the presence of top-ranked competitors from around the world. This success is the result of the Federation's ongoing efforts and initiatives to prepare our athletes to perform at the highest level.' Gold medallist Saeed Al Kubaisi said: 'I entered the championship confident in my ability to win gold, as it's the natural result of the hard work and intensive training we've put in over recent months. I want to thank the UAE Jiu-Jitsu Federation for the support they have given us, helping us reach this stage and make our mark at a global event of this scale.' Mehdi Al Awlaki said: 'The final was tough, but I never gave up and kept pushing until the last second because my goal was gold. I'm happy to take silver in such an important championship, and I'm confident there is more to come.' Tomorrow, Tuesday, Emirati athletes will compete in the open weight division, with Mehdi Al Awlaki, Saeed Al Kubaisi, and Mohammed Al Suwaidi in the men's category, and Asma Alhosani, Shamsa Al Amri, and Shamma Al Kalbani in the women's category.

12 Aug 2025 00:19 ABU DHABI (ALETIHAD)The UAE Muay Thai Youth Championship is set to be held on Friday in Dubai as part of preparing a competitive calendar ahead of next month's Youth World Championship in Abu by the UAE Muay Thai and Kickboxing Federation, the event will be hosted at Dubai World Trade Centre in Hall 3 and offers top development opportunities for local athletes, and advance the sport in the championship will feature participants from clubs across the UAE and abroad, aged 10 to 17, competing in over 90 weight categories divided into the following age groups: 10–11 years, 12–13 years, 14–15 years, and 16–17 to Ali Khouri, board member of the UAE federation, the championship's aim is to support youth ambitions and make the most of the summer break to hone emerging also reiterated that the organisers remain focused on next month's World Championships as an 'important step towards achieving our goal of taking the sport to the highest levels' when it held at the Space 42 Arena in Abu Dhabi.'This championship is an ideal opportunity for clubs and fighters from inside and outside the UAE,' said Khouri, 'and a vital platform for the federation to assess fighters' performances and discover talents to represent the national team at the Youth World Championship.'We are committed to ensuring the best organisational standards and providing all necessary resources to bring the youth national team to peak readiness for the upcoming global stage. We have completed all preparations and in a position to maximise the benefits gained.'This weekend's programme begins with the weigh-ins and medical checks for participants on Wednesday at the federation's headquarters in Abu Dhabi. The preliminary rounds will take place on August 15 from 3pm to 9pm, followed by the semi-finals on Saturday from 10am to 7pm.
