School bus accident on West Park Road leaves children injured

The Citizen28-07-2025
An incident occurred on July 28 when a school bus transporting children rolled over on West Park Road in Montgomery Park. SCP Security responded promptly to the motor vehicle accident, where a taxi overturned while carrying a load of schoolchildren.
Jaun van der Westhuizen, from SCP Security, reported that they received a call for assistance at 07:15 that morning. 'SCP Security got called for a taxi that lost control and rolled while transporting schoolchildren on the famous West Park Road,' he said.
The security team arrived on the scene within minutes to find chaos, with children climbing out of the vehicle, some crying, and others in shock or injured, said Van Der Westhuizen.
Fortunately, there were no life-threatening injuries reported. 'Approximately eight children were injured and were transported to the hospital by ER24, Help24, and Netcare911. Witnesses at the scene indicated that the taxi was speeding and had overtaken another vehicle before losing control.'

He emphasised that residents in the area have expressed growing concerns about the safety of West Park Road, citing reckless driving and speeding as significant issues.
This incident follows a tragic accident on the same road just three weeks prior, where three people lost their lives.
SCP Private Fire Search and Rescue and the City of Johannesburg were called to that scene to extricate the deceased from the vehicle.
Van Der Westhuizen questioned how many more lives needed to be lost before something gets done on this road.

Kameeldrift murders: No arrests after brutal home invasions

It has been days since two brutal murders shook the Kameeldrift community in Gauteng — yet police have made no arrests. Pretoria Rekord reports that in two separate incidents just days apart, a father of three was gunned down during a home invasion, and another resident was shot and killed on his property. Despite growing pressure from residents and grieving families desperate for justice, both cases remain unsolved. In the early hours of last Monday, 46-year-old Jaco Strydom was shot and killed during a home invasion. According to his family, Strydom woke to the sound of intruders breaking in through a sliding door. In a desperate attempt to protect his wife and three sons, he grabbed a steel pipe and confronted the armed attackers. He was shot during the struggle and collapsed in his son's bedroom. He died a hero, just hours before his youngest child's sixth birthday. Only a few days before Strydom's murder, another man was attacked and killed during a robbery. On the evening of July 24, a violent home invasion in Buffelsdrift, within the Kameeldrift policing area, resulted in the death of Mossie Mostert. One of the attackers was seen on camera walking in his yard just before four suspects — dressed in blue overalls — stormed the property. Mostert's son rushed over and found the house had been ransacked. His 82-year-old father was discovered outside, severely assaulted and tied with wires. He was transported to a hospital in Montana but was pronounced dead on arrival. Only cash and a cellphone are believed to have been stolen. Despite the murders happening in close proximity and within days of each other, no arrests have been made.
