Can Gut Bacteria Be The Key To Banishing Forever Chemicals?
PFAS (Perfluoroalkyl and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances) have been shown to cause health issues like decreased fertility, cardiovascular disease, developmental delays in children, and increased risk of certain cancers. Now, researchers say a microbe naturally found in the human gut may be able to absorb these forever chemicals and help remove them from the body.
The researchers introduced nine of these bacterial species into the guts of mice in an attempt to 'humanize' the rodents' microbiomes. They found that the bacteria quickly absorbed PFAS that were consumed by the mice, which were then expelled in their feces.
Notably, as more and more PFAS were introduced, the microbes worked harder, consistently helping withdraw the same percentage of the chemicals. Within just minutes of PFAS exposure, the bacteria accumulated between 25% and 74% of the chemicals.
While the findings are promising, the results have yet to be verified in humans. The researchers aim to utilize the study's findings to develop probiotic dietary supplements that can enhance the levels of these microbes in the human gut.
In May, The Dallas Express reported that the Environmental Protection Agency announced it would roll back limitations on certain PFAS in drinking water. Standards for PFOA and PFOS, two primary subtypes of PFAS, will remain at four parts per trillion; however, utilities will be given an extension to 2031 to comply with the limitation.
Despite the health risks associated with PFAS, they remain ubiquitous in human environments, found in a wide range of products, including food packaging, waterproof clothing, and non-stick pans. Since they take thousands of years to break down, these forever chemicals continue to accumulate in both the environment and human bodies.
'Given the scale of the problem of PFAS 'forever chemicals', particularly their effects on human health, it's concerning that so little is being done about removing these from our bodies,' said Dr. Kiran Patil, of the University of Cambridge's MRC Toxicology Unit and senior author of the report.

In Luke's case, "he's very overwhelmed by texture, color, smells." Simpson explained, "He will only eat white rice. And he has to inspect each piece of rice before he eats it. So it's beyond picky eating. A lot of control issues. It's very overwhelming.' The diagnosis will be chronicled in season 19 of RHOC, which Simpson admitted she often "didn't even know if [she] could continue to film" due to the stress and uncertainty. 'There were so many times when he would say he was starving… because he was starving. But he would refuse to eat. And as a mom, that was so frustrating," she explained. "I didn't know what to do because on one hand he's crying and telling me he's starving, and on the other hand, he refuses to eat anything that I offer." 'Every day is challenging,' she added. Today, Luke's therapist and nutritionist help him to improve, and he's added french fries, sliced bananas, potato chips, ice cream and plain turkey that 'doesn't have any lines or blemishes in it' to his diet, and they continue to work on ways to decrease his fears and anxieties surrounding food. Researchers make disturbing discovery about health risks lurking in common products: 'Highlights the critical need for further exploration'
A new study may help to unpack possible effects of microplastic pollution, including from biodegradable alternatives, on metabolism and gut bacteria. The findings suggest some concerning signs that demand further exploration into long-term health risks that could be linked to microplastic exposure and ingestion, such as the potential for gut inflammation and microbiome disruption. Polylactic acid, or PLA, is a bioplastic commonly marketed as biodegradable or compostable, and it's often used in food packaging. Made from fermented plant starch rather than fossil fuels, when broken down under the right conditions, it can degrade into lactic acid, generally understood as safe. However, PLA can also break down incompletely, resulting in some divided opinions on the material and its potential health and environmental advantages over traditional plastics. Researchers from China say their new findings indicate that PLA microplastics can break down into nanoparticles inside the body and potentially trigger a range of harmful biological responses. In their study, published in June online by the Journal of Hazardous Materials, mice were orally exposed to a daily dose of PLA microplastics. Researchers noted that "the particles retrieved from mouse feces exhibited a significant size reduction, breaking down from the micrometer scale to the nanometer scale." Short-term oral exposure appeared to impact gut microbiota and induce inflammation, while longer-term exposure seemed to cause persistent changes, including to the metabolism. The co-authors of this new study say the research "highlights the critical need for further exploration into the long-term health risks of microplastic exposure," even when it comes to materials manufactured to be biodegradable or compostable. While microplastic pollution has been studied in marine animals and environments, as well as the occasional tortoise or donkey, this study focuses on the potential for serious risks to human health and looks at PLA microplastics in particular. In 2019, a research team, with support from the World Wide Fund, estimated that people may consume up to 5 grams of microplastics per week — roughly the weight of a credit card. Some studies have also investigated possible links between microplastic exposure and chronic illnesses, such as endometriosis, though these studies have largely looked at traditional plastics. When PLA microplastics are used, it tends to be because of their eco-friendly image as a biodegradable alternative to traditional plastic types. Leveraging safe, sustainable alternatives to fossil fuel-based products is critical, but this study shows that bioplastics may still pose health threats inside the body, meriting further investigation. The researchers suggest that nanoparticles resulting from PLA breakdown could disrupt gut bacteria and contribute to inflammation, which has been linked to a range of illnesses from liver disease to neurodegenerative disorders. While more research is needed to provide a complete and thorough understanding of the potential impacts of microplastics — including from bioplastics — on our well-being, this study points toward the possibility that reducing their use could come with some health benefits. Attorney General Pam Bondi announces dismissal of charges against plastic surgeon accused of faking COVID-19 vaccine cards
Attorney General Pam Bondi announced Saturday that she is dismissing the criminal charges against a Utah plastic surgeon who was currently on trial for allegedly issuing fake Centers for Disease Control and Prevention COVID-19 vaccination records cards to people who sought fake vaccine cards. Dr. Michael Kirk Moore, whose criminal trial was currently underway in Utah, was indicted by the Justice Department in 2023. Moore, his medical corporation and three co-defendants were accused of allegedly destroying more than $28,000 worth of government-provided COVID-19 vaccines and distributing at least 1,937 falsely marked COVID-19 doses on vaccine cards in exchange for direct cash payments or donations to a charitable organization. Moore pleaded not guilty to the charges, while one of his co-defendants entered into a plea agreement for a misdemeanor charge and another co-defendant entered into a diversion agreement. One co-defendant is currently on trial with Moore. A Justice Department spokesperson did not respond to questions on whether or not the charges against them would be dropped as well. In court filings, attorneys for Moore argued that the CDC vaccine regulations in place were unconstitutional. The Biden Justice Department alleged that Moore was not administering COVID-19 vaccines in exchange for the payment, and was administering saline shots to minors, at the request of their parents, so children would think they were receiving a vaccine dose. Moore and his co-defendants were also charged with conspiracy to convert, sell, convey, and dispose of government property; and the conversion, sale, conveyance, and disposal of government property and aiding and abetting for their efforts to forge the vaccine cards. The fake cards were sold for $50 each, charging documents said, during the scheme they allegedly operated between May 2021 and September 2022. "Dr. Moore gave his patients a choice when the federal government refused to do so. He did not deserve the years in prison he was facing. It ends today," Bondi wrote on X, thanking Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, who has a history of casting doubts on the efficacy of COVID vaccines, for raising awareness of his case. "She has been a warrior for Dr. Moore and for ending the weaponization of government," Bondi wrote. In a post on X on Saturday, Greene called Moore a "hero who refused to inject his patients with a government mandated unsafe vaccine!" It was not immediately clear if the charges were being dismissed for Moore's co-defendants. The announcement comes as the department is facing uncertainty after a clash between Bondi and FBI Deputy Director Dan Bongino over a Justice Department review of the Jeffrey Epstein investigation, which led to Bongino not showing up for work on Friday, as sources say he is considering leaving his post over the dispute.
