I'm a chief technologist at Morgan Stanley. Here's what comp-sci students need to know to succeed on Wall Street.
Over the past few years, banks have become technology giants in their own right with big budgets, a focus on research and developing patents, and a constant demand for tools and products that will keep customers happy.
Wall Street has become a technologist destination that rivals the Googles and the Amazons of the world. An example of that trend is Hina Shamsi, the chief technology officer for the divisions that serve Morgan Stanley's wealth management and institutional businesses.
Shamsi, who also sits on the technology operating committee that drives tech and strategy across the firm, tells us about her career path and what she believes people should know about a career in technology at a bank. This as-told-to essay is based on a conversation with Shamsi, who's based in New York City. It has been edited for length and clarity.
I'm of South Asian descent. I grew up in Kuwait and Pakistan in a very conservative environment with very forward-thinking parents. I was the first in my family to leave home and go to North America for higher education.
If you had asked me years ago: Did I see myself on Wall Street as a chief technology officer? I would have said no.
I went to school at the University of Texas at Austin. I got a degree in mathematics and then a master's in operations research with a focus on computer science. Think about operations research as the mother of the modern-day AI used in solving large-scale problems. There were a couple of industries where this was being done, like the defense industry, airlines, and, to some extent, healthcare.
I always knew that I wanted to solve really big, hairy mathematical problems.
A friend in the airline industry told me his work was very much related to my academic background. I took a call from his company, Sabre. It's headquartered near Dallas and is very big in creating systems that help airlines plan out and optimize schedules, routes, and other decisions.
I took the job and fell in love with the industry. I spent almost 17 years in it before I got my first call from a financial services firm.

What attracted me to finance was the enormous opportunity it presented for innovation and transformation. This is a very dynamic industry, and it continues to mature. There's never a dull moment.
As a technology leader, you get an opportunity to work on wide-ranging emerging tech, like machine learning and artificial intelligence — you name it. But you also get to solve some of the most challenging business problems, as evidenced by our work rolling out our first two generative-AI products for financial advisors, in partnership with OpenAI.
Learning the business
Like the very large-scale systems I worked on in airlines, fintech is a very complex environment. There are high-scale, high-availability transactional systems. So my technology experience lent itself really nicely to financial services.
But I didn't know about the business. I had to learn it.
I read every material that was available to me in the bank's enormous amount of training content. But I think you can only go so far reading on your own.
I sat down with business leaders to really probe what's top of mind for them, the problems they are thinking about: What are your top three? You always want to have a pulse on what your industry is thinking about.
The second thing I did, which I really encourage people to do, is not just talking to senior people. Sometimes you get the best information by talking to people who are on the ground working on problems day in and day out. Whether you're sitting with the financial advisor and just watching them take a call, or you're sitting on the trading floor at an equity desk watching a trader use technology — there's no better way to know how good or bad your technology is until you observe it being used.
Even today, I take the time to sit with a financial advisor and ask them what their pain points are, what they like, and what they don't like. You'll be surprised how much you learn from putting yourself in their shoes.
Encouraging 'healthy debate' between tech and business leaders
Today, technologists have a bigger role in shaping the business through its products and the strategy itself, not just the execution.Long gone are the days when requirements came through over the wall and we were told, "Go develop this."
I can't underscore enough how important it is for us to be involved in the business-case development. The company leaders understand the business well, but they don't understand the art of the possible; they don't understand technology well. I describe it this way: The heads of the lines of business know the "what" and the "why," but they don't understand the "how." That is where the technology comes in.
Sometimes, business needs and technical realities don't align. It's a healthy debate, and it's critical to the creative process.
Business leaders have ideas and expectations that are sometimes, quite frankly, unreasonable because their role is to push and look at it from the customer's perspective. Then you also see technologists creating tech just for the sake of tech.
When you bring those two together, that debate is really good for the creative process. We encourage that because we want diverse ideas, so that when we produce something, it's been thought through well.
Advice for new grads
The single most important thing a computer science student today can do to prepare for working in tech on Wall Street is to think more broadly about their role, not just as a technologist but also as a business technologist.
What makes you stand out — and we interview thousands of candidates every year — is the niche skills, like expertise on cloud, as well as any experience with AI and machine learning. Those are the skills we're looking for.
Once you have the technical skills, the next step is to focus on learning the business through tangible experiences, like internships, as early as possible. Develop the skills you learned academically, and apply them to business-specific environments with the security and data privacy guardrails.
Complement the business mindset with the technical knowledge, and that's where you maximize the value.

The Ozempic boom could be bad news for restaurants as more than half of GLP-1 users report cutting back on dining out, report finds
GLP-1 users taking drugs like Ozempic and Wegovy are spending less on eating at restaurants and on take-out dinners, according to a new report from Bloomberg Intelligence. Changing eating habits add to a growing number of headwinds the hospitality industry is facing as a result of slow pandemic recovery and tariff-induced economic uncertainty. As restaurants grapple with how diners are responding to economic uncertainty, they may also have to contend with consumer pull-backs as a result of the rise of drugs like Ozempic and Wegovy. GLP-1 users are significantly cutting back on dining in and ordering takeout, according to a report published this week by Bloomberg Intelligence. A survey of 1,000 GLP-1 users in the U.S. found 54% of respondents said they dined out 'significantly less' or 'less' frequently since starting the medication. Nearly the same percentage reported ordering less take-out. Respondents instead are choosing to eat at home, with 70% of them reporting they're cooking at home 'significantly more' or 'more' frequently since taking GLP-1 drugs, and about half reported purchasing more groceries. GLP-1 drugs, with the ability to help some users lose weight quickly, have skyrocketed in popularity. About 4% of Americans are taking some form of GLP-1 drug for weight-loss or to treat type 2 diabetes, a 600% increase in usage from six years ago, according to May data from FAIR Health. The drugs increase insulin levels and decrease glucose levels, slowing how quickly food is digested and suppressing users' appetites. Suppressed hunger has led to some users cutting down portion sizes or needing to focus on eating nutrient-dense foods, which may deter them from dining in restaurants. Bloomberg Intelligence's research adds to growing evidence of GLP-1 users losing their appetite for dining out. A Morgan Stanley survey from April 2024 found nearly two-thirds of GLP-1 users said they spent less money at restaurants, while 31% said they cut back on groceries. The trends have led to some food companies making changes to products to account for GLP-1 users' changing appetites. In October 2024, Smoothie King added a line of high-protein and fiber products particularly for those on the medication. The year before, Nestle announced it would develop 'companion products' for GLP-1 users, should those consumers need to cut calories. GLP-1 drugmakers have taken note of some companies' anxiety. In February 2024, Lars Fruergaard Jørgensen, the CEO of Ozempic-maker Novo Nordisk, said he was fielding calls from 'scared' food company executives about the impact of the drug on the industry. The Bloomberg Intelligence report notes the dining out slowdown among GLP-1 users could be exacerbated by other economic pressures. The decrease in away-from-home dining was reported significantly across incomes, from those earning less than $50,000 to those with $150,000 or greater annual salaries, indicating a broader shift in dining trends. The report also posited that restaurants serving fewer healthy options like fast-food could be most impacted by changing eating habits. Indeed, it's not just evolving dining habits that the restaurant industry has had to contend with. The hospitality sector has had to navigate the impact of greater economic headwinds, including a widespread labor shortage that never quite recovered from the pandemic, as well as growing uncertainty about tariffs, which have led consumers confidence to plunge. Campbell's CEO Mick Beekhuizen said in an earnings call this week canned soup sales are soaring, likely a result of tighter food budgets and consumers deciding to cook at home instead of going out to eat. 'We started to see consumer sentiment softening in January,' he said. 'This continued throughout [the quarter] with consumers making more deliberate choices with their spending on food. A key outcome is a growing preference for home-cooked meals, leading to the highest levels of meals prepared at home since early 2020.' Hospitality industry experts have noted that Gen Z is also cutting back on their order sizes bysplitting appetizers, ordering kids' meals, and skipping out on alcohol to save money. Despite evidence that GLP-1 users are significantly cutting back on restaurant dining, some restaurateurs have shrugged off concerns about the drug's impact on business. Michael Osanloo, president and CEO of Portillo's Restaurant Group told Bloomberg TV last year GLP-1 use taking a bite out of the restaurant business could be a coastal problem, not one for the U.S. Midwest. 'It's totally overblown,' Osanloo said. 'I think it's a fun narrative to propose, but I don't see any impact on our business.' This story was originally featured on

India directs Turkish Airlines to maintain compliance after safety lapses
(Reuters) -India directed Turkish Airlines to ensure full compliance with aviation regulations following lapses found during inspections of the carrier's passenger and cargo flights at several cities, the country's civil aviation ministry said on Wednesday. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation conducted inspections of state-backed Turkish Airlines' passenger and cargo flights at four Indian cities from May 29 to June 2, the aviation ministry said in a statement. The aviation regulator found lapses during the inspections, including cargo containing "Dangerous Goods" that require DGCA permission for carriage of explosives across India. The goods were not mentioned in the declaration, the ministry said. Turkish Airlines did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for a comment. The inspection comes after India's IndiGo said last week it would terminate its leasing agreement with Turkish Airlines by August 31. The agreement came under public criticism in India after Turkey came out in support of Pakistan during the recent conflict between the two South Asian neighbours. "Further follow-up inspections will be conducted as necessary to ensure continuous safety oversight," the aviation ministry said. Cramer calls Wells Fargo's asset-cap removal a 'watershed moment,' raises price target on the stock
Wells Fargo is unshackled. That's according to Jim Cramer and Wall Street analysts, who are both forecasting more upside for the Club stock following the Federal Reserve's removal of the bank's $1.95 trillion asset cap Tuesday evening. The seven-year lid on Wells' balance sheet growth was precipitated by the bank's past misdeeds, such as its notorious fake accounts scandal in the 2010s. Bank of America and Morgan Stanley are among the Wall Street shops that became more optimistic Wells Fargo shares in response to the long-awaited development. Bank of America went to $90 a share from $83, while Morgan Stanley went to $87 from $77. Piper Sandler and Evercore ISI also upped their price targets. The Club is doing the same, hiking ours to $90 a share from $80. "I think this is a watershed moment" and a "pivotal milestone," Jim said Wednesday. With the nearly $2 trillion lid on its balance sheet gone, the bank can grow its deposit base further, invest more into high-growth lines of business and can lower costs that were previously poured into compliance and remediation efforts. On Wednesday, at least, the market reaction is somewhat subdued, with Wells Fargo shares up less than 1% to roughly $76 apiece. Investors had likely been pricing some of the good news, viewing the asset-cap removal as a "when, not if" event. Entering Wednesday's session, Wells Fargo's had significantly outperformed a group of banking peers since Election Day in November, as investors bet on an easier regulatory regime under President Donald Trump's second term. Wells Fargo also had numerous other scandal-related penalties lifted earlier this year. No matter the stock move Wednesday, Jim said investors need to remember that this is "a fundamental change" for the bank and CEO Charlie Scharf. The executive has wanted to "turbocharge" its growth, but he had "playing with shackles," Jim said. "The shackles are off." Wall Street analysts echoed similar sentiments. Bank of America, for example, described the event as a "positive catalyst, both fundamentally and for stock valuation." "We see potential for a new pool of investors who had been fatigued by the regulatory overhang to step-in given WFC's idiosyncratic growth story, room for efficiency gains in the consumer bank and potential for capital relief," the analysts, who reiterated their buy rating on the stock, wrote in a note to clients. Meanwhile, Morgan Stanley said the cap's removal will "spur a multi-year period of growth at Wells." Analysts cited more loan growth and an expansion into its capital markets business. "An unconstrained Wells will put balance sheet and capital to work in markets, supporting and financing client trading activity, driving higher markets-related NII and overall trading volumes," the analysts, who reiterated their buy-equivalent rating, said. WFC YTD mountain Wells Fargo (WFC) year-to-date performance All of this aligns with CEO Scharf's comments Wednesday in an exclusive interview with CNBC. The executive, who was hired in 2019 to clean up the bank, described the cap's removal as "hugely significant." He pointed to growth in customer deposits first and foremost because now the bank can expand its balance sheet. That's because by some estimates Wells Fargo has missed out on $400 billion worth of deposits over the past seven years due to the Fed-imposed regulatory punishment. It's more than just the deposit base, though, according to Scharf. "It's the ability to provide advice, provide investment services. If it's in corporate, it's the ability to help [clients] access public markets," he continued. "With the exception of the mortgage business, all have the opportunity to grow – both in terms of returns and in terms of rate of growth." Jim said Wells Fargo can also compete better among its Wall Street peers in the long run. "Before this cap, these banks were all kind of clustered. Since this cap, Wells has fallen so far behind," he said. "I think Charlie is going to go for JPMorgan, " Jim added, arguing that Wells Fargo can grab more share in businesses like commercial banking and credit cards. Asked specifically about going after JPMorgan, the CEO told Jim that Wells now has "the ability to compete differently moving forward," but "there's no one person we're targeting." Although none of these changes can happen overnight, management has been laying the groundwork for a turnaround in its businesses for years. Case in point: Wells Fargo has made a slew of senior level hires in its corporate and investment banking division. The expansion into Wall Street dealmaking and capital markets diversifies Wells Fargo's revenues further, so that the firm doesn't rely so heavily on interest-based incomes that are at the mercy of the Fed's monetary policy moves. And although Wells will definitely save on expenses in remediation efforts, the bank still plans to invest into compliance. "Yesterday versus today, the only thing that's different is the perception of Wells Fargo, which is incredibly important because we've always been perceived as being in the penalty box," Scharf said. He continued, "This is not the kind of environment where you come out guns ablazing on no light switch that's going to go off today versus yesterday."
