Rick Barnes details how Vols are 'quite fortunate' to have Ja'Kobi Gillespie
Maryland transfer guard Ja'Kobi Gillespie committed to Tennessee following the end of the 2025 basketball season.
The 6-foot-1, 186-pound Gillespie also played at Belmont from 2022-25. He played one season at Maryland.
Gillespie has appeared in 93 games, including 68 starts, during his collegiate career, averaging 13.6 points, 2.8 rebounds, 4.2 assists and 1.9 steals per contest.
"We are thrilled to welcome Ja'Kobi to Rocky Top, a place he and his wonderful family know well as East Tennessee natives who bleed orange," Tennessee head coach Rick Barnes said. "Ja'Kobi is a high-character young man who fits our program and truly wants to be a Volunteer. A dynamic point guard who can really shoot the ball from deep and get his teammates involved, Ja'Kobi is a fearless competitor with a high basketball IQ. We expect him to help lead our team from day one and we feel quite fortunate to have him as a part of our program."
Gillespie is from Greeneville High School in Greeneville, Tennessee. He earned 2022 Tennessee 3A Mr. Basketball honors.

Then Cedric Mullin got the eighth started with an RBI double off Brenan Hanifee before scoring on a wild pitch. Ryan O'Hearn followed with a two-run double off Beau Brieske, before Westburg hooked Brieske's 1-0 offering around the left-field foul pole. Colt Keith provided the Tigers' run on an RBI double that struck high off the out-of-town scoreboard in right. Mize (6-2) struck out seven and walked two over 5 1/3 innings. Key moment After Keith's double cut it to 2-1, Detroit inserted Dillon Dingler to pinch hit with runners on second and third. Eflin induced Dingler into a sharp grounder to third, and Urías fired home in plenty of time for Adley Rutschman to tag out Wenceel Perez as the potential tying run. Key stat Eflin has now posted a 1.47 ERA in three career starts against the Tigers (18 1/3 IP, 3 ER). Up next Detroit's reigning AL Cy Young winner Tarik Skubal (6-2, 2.16 ERA) looks for his first consecutive wins since mid-April after allowing only one run across his last three starts (23 2/3 IP). Maryland center Derik Queen praised in 2025 NBA draft by ESPN analyst Derik Queen is a potential lottery pick in the 2025 NBA draft because of his skill set, and the former Maryland center recently earned high praise from ESPN analyst Paul Biancardi. Queen was the Big Ten Freshman of the Year, averaging 16.5 points, nine rebounds, 1.9 assists, 1.1 steals and 1.1 blocks in 36 games on 52.6% shooting from the field. He helped lead the Terrapins to their first Sweet 16 appearance since 2016. The 6-foot-10 standout is highly touted for his versatility on offense and ability to score in various ways. He is a tremendous competitor and demonstrated throughout the year his ability to impact games on defense, traits that earned him a high distinction from Biancardi. Queen, also an AP All-American honorable mention, set the program freshman scoring record (594 points) after registering 12 20-point games and 15 double-doubles, which led all first-year players. He ranked sixth in scoring average among Power Four freshmen. The 20-year-old competed in the combine last month, registering a 7-foot wingspan in the anthropometric measurement testing. He dazzled with that length with the Terrapins, another key trait that makes him an intriguing prospect at the next level. Queen had a tremendous rise up draft boards throughout the season and is on the verge of becoming a first-round pick, as a result. He projects to have a bright future ahead and should fit in well with teams drafting in the lottery on June 25.
