Tennessee basketball target makes transfer decision The NCAA transfer portal spring window for basketball student-athletes closes Tuesday. A Tennessee transfer target guard announced his commitment to USC on the final day of the spring window. Maryland guard Rodney Rice committed to the Trojans after entering the NCAA transfer portal on March 31. He was at Maryland during the 2024-25 campaign after playing for Virginia Tech from 2022-24. As a sophomore with the Terrapins in the 2024-25 season, Rice was teammates with Ja'Kobi Gillespie. Gillespie committed to the Vols and head coach Rick Barnes on April 4. He also played at Belmont from 2022-25. He is from Greeneville High School in Greeneville, Tennessee and earned 2022 Tennessee 3A Mr. Basketball honors. During Gillespie's collegiate career, the latest Vols' roster addition has appeared in 93 games, including 68 starts. Rick Barnes details how Vols are 'quite fortunate' to have Ja'Kobi Gillespie Maryland transfer guard Ja'Kobi Gillespie committed to Tennessee following the end of the 2025 basketball season. The 6-foot-1, 186-pound Gillespie also played at Belmont from 2022-25. He played one season at Maryland. Gillespie has appeared in 93 games, including 68 starts, during his collegiate career, averaging 13.6 points, 2.8 rebounds, 4.2 assists and 1.9 steals per contest. "We are thrilled to welcome Ja'Kobi to Rocky Top, a place he and his wonderful family know well as East Tennessee natives who bleed orange," Tennessee head coach Rick Barnes said. "Ja'Kobi is a high-character young man who fits our program and truly wants to be a Volunteer. A dynamic point guard who can really shoot the ball from deep and get his teammates involved, Ja'Kobi is a fearless competitor with a high basketball IQ. We expect him to help lead our team from day one and we feel quite fortunate to have him as a part of our program." Gillespie is from Greeneville High School in Greeneville, Tennessee. Greeneville native Ja'Kobi Gillespie commits to Tennessee after helping Maryland to Sweet 16
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WATE) — Tennessee Basketball picked up its first commitment out of the portal for the 2025-26 season. Maryland transfer Ja'Kobi Gillespie announced on his Instagram that he has committed to the Vols. Gillispie spent one season at Maryland, averaging 14.7 points per game and 4.8 assists as the Terrapins made their first Sweet 16 appearance since 2016. The Greeneville, Tennessee native is an elite 3-point shooter. He made 87 triples on 40.7% percent shooting. Lady Vols guard Avery Strickland enters transfer portal after two years on Rocky Top Before Maryland, Gillispie spent two seasons at Belmont. He broke out during his sophomore season averaging 17.2 points per game and led the Missouri Valley Conference with 2.2 steals. In 2021 and 2022, Gillespie led the Greene Devils to back-to-back state championships. In his senior year, he was named 2022 Tennessee 3A Mr. Basketball. has Gillespie ranked as the top transfer in the portal.
