Greeneville native Ja'Kobi Gillespie commits to Tennessee after helping Maryland to Sweet 16

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WATE) — Tennessee Basketball picked up its first commitment out of the portal for the 2025-26 season. Maryland transfer Ja'Kobi Gillespie announced on his Instagram that he has committed to the Vols.
Gillispie spent one season at Maryland, averaging 14.7 points per game and 4.8 assists as the Terrapins made their first Sweet 16 appearance since 2016. The Greeneville, Tennessee native is an elite 3-point shooter. He made 87 triples on 40.7% percent shooting.

Before Maryland, Gillispie spent two seasons at Belmont. He broke out during his sophomore season averaging 17.2 points per game and led the Missouri Valley Conference with 2.2 steals.
In 2021 and 2022, Gillespie led the Greene Devils to back-to-back state championships. In his senior year, he was named 2022 Tennessee 3A Mr. Basketball.

Three former Vols began the week in MLB: Jordan Beck (Colorado), Garrett Crochet (Boston) and Seth Halvorsen (Colorado). Chase Dollander made his return to Colorado after being placed on the 15-day injured list May 22, retroactive to May 19, due to right forearm tightness. Crochet played for Tennessee from 2018-20 and was selected by the White Sox in the 2020 MLB draft (No. 11 overall). He was traded to the Red Sox following the 2024 season. Beck was drafted by Colorado (No. 38 overall) in 2022 and played for the Vols from 2020-22. Halvorsen was selected by the Rockies in 2023 during the seventh round (No. 202 overall) after playing at Tennessee from 2022-23. Dollander was also drafted by the Rockies in 2023 with the No. 9 overall pick. Below are performances from former Vols during Week 11 of the 2025 MLB season. Jordan Beck Beck hit an infield single in the third inning and a RBI single in the fifth inning during the Rockies' second win over Miami June 3. He singled in his first two plate appearances on June 7. Beck ended the series with a pair of RBI doubles and scored one run on Sunday. The Vols have appeared in five consecutive super regionals and six consecutive regionals under eighth-year head coach Tony Vitello. First baseman Andrew Fischer completed his first season at Tennessee after transferring from Ole Miss. The 6-foot-1, 210-pound junior appeared in all 65 games for the Vols in 2025, including 65 starts. Fischer reached base in every contest during the 2025 season. He walked during the first inning of Tennessee's season finale at Arkansas, extending his on-base streak to 68 games. Dating to the last three contests at Ole Miss in 2024, Fischer's on base streak stands at 68 games following the 2025 campaign at Tennessee. His last collegiate game to not reach base was with the Rebels at LSU on May 16, 2024. Fischer also tied Chase Headley's 2005 single-season record for walks (63) in Tennessee's program history.
