Sultan Nazrin calls for preventive action after crash kills 15 UPSI students
IPOH, June 9 — The Sultan of Perak, Sultan Nazrin Shah has decreed that preventive measures must be implemented due to the recent frequency of fatal road accidents.
Datuk Pengelola Bijaya Diraja to Sultan Nazrin, Meor Hezbullah Meor Abd Malik, stated in a press release that His Royal Highness also commanded that the accident which claimed the lives of 15 Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) students on the East-West Highway (JRTB) early this morning serve as a lesson.
Among the directives is to identify existing weaknesses for improvement, especially in terms of law and regulation enforcement, so that tragic accidents like this can be prevented from recurring.
'While it is a fact that life and death are determined by the Almighty, His Royal Highness is of the view that Allah SWT urges humans to strive and make efforts to protect themselves from threats, calamities, dangers, and disasters,' he said.
Meor Hezbullah added that Sultan Nazrin also expressed his deepest sympathy and condolences to the families of the victims who lost their beloved family members at such a young age.
He said His Royal Highness prayed that the parents and families of the victims be granted strength and fortitude to face this heavy trial and prayed that the souls of those who perished be showered with divine mercy and placed among the righteous.
Earlier, Sultan Nazrin and Raja Permaisuri Tuanku Zara Salim, who is also the Chancellor of UPSI, graciously arrived at the Raja Permaisuri Bainun Hospital (HRPB) here to console the families of victims and receive a briefing on the tragedy from the hospital management. — Bernama

Yusoff Rawther acquitted and discharged of drug trafficking, fake firearm charges
KUALA LUMPUR, June 12 — Former political aide Muhammed Yusoff Rawther was today acquitted and discharged by the High Court here of two charges involving drug trafficking and possession of a fake firearm without being called to enter his defence. Judge Datuk Muhammad Jamil Hussin ruled that the prosecution had failed to establish a prima facie case against the 32-year-old, according to a report published by Astro Awani today. Muhammed Yusoff was represented by lawyer Muhammad Rafique Rashid Ali, while Deputy Public Prosecutor Mohd Sabri Othman led the prosecution. The prosecution closed its case on April 28 after calling 13 witnesses during the trial, which began on April 7. Among those who testified were a narcotics investigation officer from the Dang Wangi District Police Headquarters and a chemist from the Chemistry Department of Malaysia. On September 12, 2024, Muhammed Yusoff was charged in the Magistrates' Court here with trafficking 305 grammes of cannabis in a vehicle in front of the Kuala Lumpur Police Contingent Headquarters surau at 10.15am on September 6, 2024. The charge was framed under Section 39B(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 and punishable under Section 39B(2) of the same Act, which carries a mandatory sentence of life imprisonment and no fewer than 12 strokes of the cane, upon conviction. He was also charged under Section 36(1) of the Arms Act 1960 for possession of two imitation pistols by the roadside near a condominium along Jalan Bukit Kiara at about 9.25am the same day. The offence carries a maximum sentence of one year in prison or a fine of up to RM5,000, or both. On November 12, 2024, the Magistrates' Court allowed the drug trafficking case to be transferred to the High Court.

Armed MACC tactical squad seen entering Tan Sri's home in sukuk fund probe linked to Klang Valley highway project
KUALA LUMPUR, June 12 — The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission's (MACC) tactical squad was seen entering the residence of a 'Tan Sri' in Bandar Tasik Selatan this morning, as part of investigations into the alleged misappropriation of sukuk funds for a Klang Valley highway project. Four vehicles from MACC's Anti-Corruption Tactical Squad (ACTS), including two white vans, a Nissan Grand Livina, and a Honda City, arrived at the property at around 10.50am, with officers visibly armed, according to a report published in The Star today. Earlier at 8.45am, a white Toyota Vios carrying MACC officers was also seen entering the premises, where part of the entrance had been sealed off by private auxiliary police with cones and barriers. Members of the media were barred from approaching the area. The latest development follows a six-hour session yesterday during which the Tan Sri's statement was recorded between 9am and 3.07pm. MACC chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki previously confirmed that the highway concessionaire involved is considered a key witness in the case. As part of the ongoing probe, 45 individuals who had earlier provided statements were recalled for further questioning. On June 3, MACC revealed it had seized assets valued at approximately RM143 million, believed to be linked to the misuse of sukuk funds meant for the infrastructure project. Authorities are also tracking down luxury assets associated with the Tan Sri, including vehicles and properties reportedly located in London and Switzerland.

Bus company owner quizzed over crash that killed 15 UPSI students
GERIK: The owner of the bus company involved in the tragic crash that claimed 15 lives, while transporting students from Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI), has had his statement recorded by police. Acting district police chief Deputy Superintendent Muhammad Firdaus Abdullah said the man, in his 50s, was called in to assist with the investigation at the Gerik district police headquarters at 10.30pm last night. "We took about an hour and 30 minutes to record his statement," he said when contacted today. Yesterday, it was reported that all permits held by the tour bus company involved in the fatal crash in Gerik were revoked with immediate effect following multiple breaches of permit conditions. Transport Minister Anthony Loke said the company had committed two major violations: leasing its operating permit to a third party and failing to activate the vehicle's GPS tracking system. Loke said the permit holder, who is based in Kedah, had l eased the permit to an operator in Kelantan for RM500 a month. On Monday, the bus, carrying 42 UPSI students, was travelling from Jertih, Terengganu, to the university's main campus when it collided with a Perodua Alza at Km53 of the East-West Highway. Thirteen students died at the scene, while two others were pronounced dead in hospital.
