Daily Tribune10-02-2025
Students from schools across the Kingdom of Bahrain have secured advanced rankings in the 2023 Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS), as announced by the International Association for the Evaluation of Educational Achievement (IEA), based in Amsterdam. Bahrain's achievement comes following the participation of all government and private schools in the kingdom as part of a broad international assessment.
Bahraini students ranked second in the Arab world in the Grade 4 Science assessment and third in the Grade 4 Mathematics assessment. Additionally, they secured fourth place in the Arab world in the Grade 8 Science assessment and third place in the Grade 8 Mathematics assessment.
On this occasion, Dr. Samah Mohammed Al-Ajawi, Assistant Undersecretary for Education Policies and Development and National Coordinator for International Studies, expressed her gratitude to all students who participated in the assessment, as well as to the teachers and specialists who supervised their preparation. She emphasized that the Ministry of Education is committed to enhancing educational practices in mathematics and science to keep pace with global advancements in these critical subjects within the STREAM approach.
Dr. Al-Ajawi further highlighted the ministry's strategic efforts to develop mathematics and science curricula and improve teaching methodologies to achieve even better international results in future assessments.
The TIMSS study aims to provide highly accurate, high-quality, and credible data and indicators on the teaching and learning of mathematics and science in government and private schools. These insights are instrumental in shaping educational policies and ensuring continuous improvements in the teaching of these subjects.

50,000-Year-Old Artifacts Unearthed In Al-Quraynah Town In Riyadh

The Heritage Commission has completed an archaeological survey and excavation project at an archaeological site in the town of Al-Quraynah, northwest of Riyadh. The project resulted in the discovery of numerous earthenware pieces and stone tools, some dating back 50,000 years to the Middle Stone Age. The survey and excavation work also revealed circular structures that closely resemble tombs dating back to the third and second millennium BC. They also identified an archaeological road extending from the valley to the top of the plateau at Al-Qurainah, all the way to Riyadh. This discovery is one of the fruits of the Al-Yamamah initiative launched by the Heritage Commission to redraw the archaeological map of the Riyadh region and surrounding areas. This initiative involves conducting precise surveys using advanced research techniques to document previously unexplored sites and analyze patterns of human settlement across different eras, reflecting the depth of the region's cultural and civilizational heritage. The survey and excavation process was conducted with the participation of a group of Saudi experts, as part of its efforts to survey and excavate national heritage sites, preserve them, and promote them, while leveraging this national heritage portfolio as an important cultural and economic resource for the Kingdom. The project sought to gather as much information as possible to enhance scientific studies on the Quraynah site to understand the site's cultural and historical sequence, as well as to identify architectural styles and construction methods, and to document archaeological findings that resulted from the project's work. The Heritage Commission indicated that its archaeological survey and excavation works across various regions of Saudi Arabia is a continuation of its efforts to preserve national heritage assets. It explained that the Kingdom's cultural heritage is an extension of the successive civilizations that settled on its lands throughout the ages. This reflects the Kingdom's richness in heritage, cultural, and historical resources.

Bahrain Skies To Dazzle With Rare Celestial Events

Astronomy enthusiasts in Bahrain are in for a spectacular treat, as multiple celestial phenomena are set to illuminate the night skies from the evening of Monday, August 11, until just before sunrise on Tuesday, August 12, 2025. The phenomena will be visible for 10 hours and 52 minutes, provided weather conditions allow for clear skies. Bahraini astronomer Ali Al-Hajri revealed that the rare astronomical sequence includes sightings of Mars, Saturn, the Moon, the Perseid meteor shower, and a striking conjunction of Venus and Jupiter — all in one night. The night will begin with the planet Mars appearing low on the western horizon shortly after sunset. Mars will be 95% illuminated and positioned at an altitude of 28 degrees, gradually descending as the evening progresses. The planet will be 325 million kilometers from Earth, and its light will take approximately 18 minutes and 4 seconds to reach observers. Later in the evening, stargazers will witness the Moon approaching Saturn in the eastern sky. Starting around 9:30 p.m., the two celestial bodies will be separated by approximately 10 degrees, drawing closer throughout the night. By sunrise on Tuesday, the Moon will be just 7 degrees and 27 minutes from Saturn. The Moon will be in a waning gibbous phase, 92.5% illuminated, and about 370,000 kilometers from Earth — its light reaching the planet in just over one second. Saturn, meanwhile, will be almost fully illuminated (99.9%) and located at a distance of 1.3 billion kilometers, with its light taking over one hour and 13 minutes to arrive.
