Stolen World War II landing gear returned to memorial after campaign

Landing gear from a World War II bomber stolen from a memorial to 15 RAF airmen killed in a crash in the Cooley Mountains in Co Louth in 1942 has been returned after a social media campaign by a local community group.
The heavy steel parts were removed from the site earlier this month and are believed to have been dragged down a mountain trail by a quad.
They were part of a memorial marking the site where a US Consolidated Liberator bomber crashed in dense fog with 19 crew onboard on 16 March 1942.
The plane had been en route from Egypt to England but got lost because of bad weather.
According to Sligo-based historian Dennis Burke, 13 of those on board were experienced pilots, navigators and wireless operators who were to crew other liberators to be flown back to North Africa for use in bombing missions.
Those on board were a mix of English, Scottish, American, Canadian and a lone New Zealander.
The plane circled Dublin several times and was then along the Irish coastline and over Dundalk, before banking left in dense fog towards the Cooley Mountains en route to an RAF base in Warrenpoint in Co Down.
The right wing of the huge aircraft hit a mound and crashed on Sliabh na gCloch, the mountain of stone, with 15 killed.
A letter from one of the four survivors to the family of one of those killed described the conditions as the worst he had experienced in three years of flying, saying "it was almost impossible to see our own wing tips."
Local people erected a small memorial plaque at the site in 1992 to mark the 50th anniversary of the crash.
Three years ago, a more substantial memorial was erected to mark the 80th anniversary.
It is mounted on a crankshaft from one of the four engines that powered the plane.
The memorial contains a model of the Consolidated Liberator bomber, items found at the site of the crash, and the names of those who were killed.
It was erected close to the landing gear that bore the three wheels of the aircraft which had laid for the past 83 years near where it exploded on impact.
The site was not widely known but over the years by word of mouth the wreckage had become a popular stopping point for walking groups and was regarded as part of the memorial.
However, earlier this month the three steel parts were removed. It is presumed the intention was to sell the high-grade steel for scrap.
Members of a local group that erected the memorial were alerted around 5pm on Thursday when one of them, Derek Roddy, took a friend for a walk up the mountain to visit the site.
Local Garda sergeant John Brady advised the group to take to social media to highlight the theft.
"We were told this local monument had been desecrated and removed from the mountain so the first thing we did was try and spread the word to get it back where it belongs," explains Michael Muckian of Cooley Peninsula Community Alert.
"People were angry because this is something that is so special to so many people and was removed from the mountain and to some people it's just scrap, but to us it's history. We had to let people know that if they saw this it had been stolen."
The tactic worked.
A Facebook post stating "Sacred Memorial Now At Risk" and containing the story of the crash, with an appeal for help in recovering the wreckage, was viewed by more than 420,000 people.
Within hours the group was able to establish that the landing gear had been stolen on either 13 or 14 August
At 7am on Friday morning, just 14 hours after the alert had been issued, Garda Sergeant John Brady phoned Derek Roddy and told him it had been found dumped at the bottom of the trail. They believe it was dragged down when stolen.
"It just shows you what social media and community spirit can do," said Michael Muckian.
"We were even contacted by people in America because there is a huge interest in the history of the Liberator aircraft and it is Memorial Weekend there; people were really shocked and angry.
"But it has ended well and there is a lot of relief."
Derek Roddy summoned family members and friends to remove the heavy parts yesterday afternoon.
They included his father Noel, a retired engineer who erected the first memorial with two friends and helped with the second.
"They wanted to set up a memorial so it would be remembered as a place where 15 young men passed away," he explains.
"Over many years every single piece of that plane disappeared from the mountain, except the landing gear which for some reason was left and it became a local go-to place and the most common question people in the area would get asked by walkers was how to get to the crash site.
"When the new memorial was erected three years ago the number of people visiting increased."
Derek is in regular contact with the 98-year-old sister of one of wireless operator Thomas Pattison, the crew member who wrote the letter describing what happened.
His words are included inscribed on the memorial. Derek has also helped relatives of two of the crew visit the site in recent years.
The plan is to return the landing gear to the crash site and to anchor it in a way that will mean it can never be removed again.
"You sort of got the sense like people see this as a sacred area now and a memorial to fifteen men, young men, who lost their lives and it was just lovely to see it being left at peace and being respected," Derek said.
Derek added that "it was really, really disheartening to see that someone was seeing these pieces as maybe just scrap to be sold."
"It is part of the history of this place. It's great to have the landing gear back and we have to make sure this can't happen again."
The group last night posted another message, this time thanking gardaí and everyone who shared information about the search.
"This was never about blame," the message states.

One of the first things they teach you in Irish class is 'How are you?' and 'Where do you come from?'; sentences which help you illustrate your identity as you communicate in a new language. Last autumn, after celebrating five years of leaving everything behind and moving to Ireland, I decided it was time that I would learn Irish. This would have been my fifth language, and I knew it would help me integrate into Irish society further. If having a thick Cork accent was not enough, I now wanted to learn Irish, be able to order a pint of Guinness or Beamish at the bar as gaeilge, and finally try to understand a conversation that is being shared in Irish. My alma mater was offering Irish classes for adults at different levels, from beginners to intermediate, and I felt this was the perfect place to dip my toes in and learn. Learning a new language can be daunting at times; there are moments when you may feel lost and confused, but I knew I was enjoying every second of my two-hour-long evening classes, including the scheduled tea break. But I did not expect that these classes would end up with a trip to a Gaeltacht in West Kerry. It was there that I fell deeply in love with the Irish language, and the culture. It was a bleak May weekend, the rolling hills of the Kingdom covered with thick fog as we made our way West, entering the Gaeltacht. Dingle Bay was hidden away under the dense cloud as we drove along winding roads, salty air kissing our cheeks as we drove with the car windows down. We were 13 people from the adult course, staying in the village of Ballyferriter, a single street of four pubs, no shop and battering winds that push you back as you walk against them. During the weekend, a seanchaí told his family story. He told us about the history of West Kerry, how he only knew how to make the sign of the cross in Irish, and called the former minister of education Donogh O'Malley, who made secondary education free, his hero. At the pubs in the village, I ordered rounds of pints, asked how much a Guinness cost (€5.50), in Irish. I also met some of the Irish Rugby sevens team who were travelling around West Kerry. I love Ireland with my whole heart. But, Ballyferriter made me fall deeply in love with the Irish language and the people. I sang Siúil a Rúin to a crowd in pub number two before being asked to give another tune. We sat drinking pints, chatting away and listening to stories before we were told to leave the pub well after closing time. We sheltered under the rain in Tigh Áine, near Dun Chaoin, eating our lunch as we stared out at the Atlantic Ocean. We spent time in the Blasket Island centre – reading and listening in Irish. The words of Muiris Ó Súilleabháin were etched into the wall at the centre. They will forever sit with me: '… 'But if you are not an Irishman', said he again, 'what are you?' 'A Blasket man, my boy, ' says I.' My heart was full of grá as I left West Kerry, knowing fully well that I would come back to see warm hearts and newfound friends who offered me the opportunity to milk their cows. Migrants like me have been taking it upon themselves to learn the Irish language, and according to a recent study from the University of Galway, offering migrants the opportunity to learn the Irish language could help with integration in some rural communities across the country. World could ‘fall far short' of meeting food needs by 2050

Former US special envoy for global food security and leading advocate for global seed conservation and crop diversity, Dr. Cary Fowler has expressed concerns about how global food systems are positioned to feed the world population going forward. At the World Seed Congress (WSC) organised by the International Federation (ISF), which recently took place in Istanbul, Turkey, Agriland asked Dr. Fowler how he believes the world is currently positioned to feed its growing population. Dr. Fowler won the 2024 World Food Prize and was also a key architect in the development of the World Seed Vault in Svalbard. In his keynote address to the WSC, he said: 'Back in October [2024], my office at the US Department of State brought together a small group of Nobel laureates and World Food Prize laureates. 'We drafted a statement saying that we were going to fall far short of meeting food need and food demand by 2050 and we really need to now make a long-term commitment to make transformative, bold moonshot research and development in order to have the kind of transformative developments in food production that will be necessary to feed people by 2050. 'So yes, I'm worried about how we're positioned to feed the world at this point,' he told Agriland. Dr. Cary Fowler delivering the keynote address at the World Seed Congress Dr. Fowler said: 'Today, there at least 750 million people on earth who are food insecure. We define that as not having access to sufficient food for basic human needs. 'There are three billion people on earth than can not afford an adequate diet and, I think most tragically, there are 60 million children under the age of five who are physically and cognitively stunted – and are so because of inadequate food intake and more importantly, inadequate nutrition. 'I urge you to think about what our world is going to look like and what governments in countries are going to look like if we have a third of the children in many countries – in Africa for instance – who are growing up physically and cognitively stunted. That's not a world we want to live in in the future. 'We don't just have a problem with food insecurity, we have a problem with nutrition insecurity and we aren't really thinking about those in the same way,' Dr. Fowler added. The American agriculturalist listed six headwinds he believes are facing food security in the future: Climate; Soil; Water; Conflict; Trade; Research and development. Dr. Fowler also noted that said that April was the second-hottest April ever recorded on earth. However, he added: 'More interestingly, it was the 555th consecutive month in which the global average temperature for the month exceeded the 20th century average. '555 consecutive months of what some people would call 'above average' temperatures.' He highlighted that there will also be a negative hit to food productivity in the future because of climate. Soil and water On soil, Dr. Fowler noted that the African Union has said as much as 50% of its current cropland may be unusable by the year 2050, while more than 75% of their land is already degraded'. He referred to a recent study showing that 14-17% of existing global cropland is affected by toxic metal pollution. 'That means 900 million to 1.4 billion people are living in regions of what they call heightened public health and ecological risk,' Dr. Fowler explained. On water, the agriculturalist said that 'agriculture globally takes about 70% of freshwater supplies', but also noted that this percentage is higher in his home country of the US. '21 of 37 major aquafers in the world are in a position of being depleted faster than they are replenishing,' Commenting on the ties between conflict and food security, he said: 'Food insecurity is a cause of conflict. It has been a cause of conflict for thousands of years. 'But on the other hand, conflict is a driver of food insecurity and if you look at where the hungry people are in the world today, 60% of them are living in countries that are experiencing conflict. 'So without solving the problem of food insecurity, we're not going to solve the problem of conflict in our world.' Future of agriculture On research and development, he highlighted that budgets for agricultural research and development – as well as basic scientific research – have been in decline for decades. Dr. Fowler said: 'It's really interesting to me because, if you look at the return on investment, it's 10-1, sometimes 30-1, and yet we've starved those budgets.' The agriculturalist also quoted Norman Borlaug – who won the Nobel prize in 1970 – who famously said during his laureate lecture: 'The Green Revolution has bought us 30 years of time'. The Green Revolution refers to the development of high-yielding plant varieties in the 1940s to the 1960s. It is widely acknowledged that these developments – especially in wheat and rice crops – increased food supplies and staved off widespread starvation in developing countries. Dr. Fowler said: 'That was in 1970. We've passed the 30-year mark. What we haven't done is to commit to any type of long-term initiative similar to Norman Borlaug's. 'So, if we want to meet food need by 2050, we can't wait until 2049, we need to be making these investments now.' In summarising the main points of his keynote presentation, Dr. Fowler said: 'Agriculture faces a historic culmination of challenges. 'I've never seen anything like the culmination of challenges that agriculture faces now. Any one of those challenges would be really serious but the culmination of them is something that we collectively are not taking seriously enough.' The World Seed Congress took place from Monday, May 19, to Wednesday, May 21 in Istanbul, Turkey. The event was organised by the International Seed Federation (ISF) and saw over 1,500 delegates from 70 countries attend. Agriland attended the event in association with a group of 11 journalists from nine countries, facilitated by the International Federation of Agricultural Journalists.

Tailteann Cup: Kildare and Fermanagh join Limerick and Wicklow in quarter-finals

Kildare may have secured the home quarter-final that they wanted in the Tailteann Cup on Sunday afternoon, but Sligo's late rally at Dr Hyde Park highlighted some of the vulnerabilities of the competition favourites. It finished 4-19 to 1-24 in favour of Brian Flanagan's side, with Daniel Flynn once again proving his value as he hit 2-3, following up from his tally of 2-4 against Tipperary last time out. Playing with a strong breeze at their backs, Kildare responded to Cian Lally's early goal for Sligo by hitting three of their own in the first 15 minutes. Flynn hit the first, toe-poking in a rebound after Aidan Devaney saved his initial effort, then James McGrath powered forward to find the bottom corner of the net and Alex Beirne added a third. But a pair of two-pointers was a poor return on a day when kickouts from the town end were easily covering 80 metres of ground if needed. A half-time score of 3-11 to 1-7 was not an insurmountable lead, though it looked a lot more convincing when Flynn added his second goal and Kildare led by 15 points with 50 minutes played. READ MORE Eventually Sligo found their shooting boots. Niall Murphy was unmarkable close to goal, shooting 0-10 in total from nine kicks, while Pat Spillane came off the bench to shoot two doubles. The lead briefly went down to two points (4-17 to 1-24) but Lee Deignan and Alan McLoughlin both missed the target from distance, Cian Lally turned down another scorable effort from range, and Mark Dempsey made a crucial fingertip save to prevent Murphy from playing in O'Connor with just the goalkeeper to beat, all in the last five minutes. In Group 1's other game, Leitrim won their first game of 2025 against Tipperary in Mullingar, but as the last-ranked third place team, their season still came to an end. In a low-scoring first half, Cian Smith's two-pointer was the only score in the opening 15 minutes, and goals from Jack Flynn and Tom Prior pushed Leitrim 2-2 to 0-3 ahead at half-time. Longford were the only team already eliminated going into Sunday's games, but despite that they turned out in style against Carlow in Tullamore, shooting seven first-half two-pointers to go with Oran Kenny's goal. Matthew Carey racked up 0-15 in total, including five of those first-half doubles, in a 1-20 to 1-15 win that pushed Carlow into third spot in the group. Fermanagh confirmed their passage through to the last eight in Croke Park where they outscored Wexford 0-9 to 0-4 in the final quarter. Seán Nolan's goal had Wexford in front by five with 30 minutes played, but Fermanagh grew into the game with Conor Love (0-9) leading their attack. Fermanagh now join Kildare, Limerick and Wicklow in the quarter-finals as group winners. In the preliminary quarter-finals next weekend, the home teams will be Sligo, Wexford, Offaly and Westmeath.
