Pakistan to kickstart post-Hajj flight operations today to bring back pilgrims

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan will kickstart its post-flight Hajj operations to bring thousands of pilgrims back to the country from today, Tuesday, state-run media reported, adding that they would continue till July 10. Pakistan concluded its 33-day pre-Hajj flight operation last month, transporting more than 115,000 pilgrims to Saudi Arabia under both the government and private schemes for the annual Islamic pilgrimage. This year's Hajj pilgrimage took place from June 4 to June 9, drawing millions of pilgrims to the holy cities of Makkah and Madinah. Pakistan was among several countries managing large-scale contingents during the annual religious gathering. 'Post-Hajj flight operation to bring back Pakistani pilgrims is starting from Tuesday,' state broadcaster Radio Pakistan reported on Monday, quoting Secretary Religious Affairs Dr. Syed Ata ur Rehman. Sharing details, Rehman said Pakistan International Airlines' flight PK-732 carrying 307 pilgrims will leave Jeddah for Islamabad. 'Similarly, the first post-Hajj flight from Madinah PK-7030 will depart for Lahore on Thursday,' Radio Pakistan said. 'The national flag carrier will airlift 307 pilgrims.' The Pakistani official said the flight operation would continue till July 10 during which a total of over 88,000 pilgrims under the government scheme will be transported to Pakistan via 362 flights. 'Meanwhile, Dr. Syed Ata ur Rehman highlighted that elaborate arrangements have been made for smooth transportation of the pilgrims back to their homeland,' the state broadcaster said. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Monday thanked Saudi King Salman and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman for the Kingdom's 'exceptional organization' of Hajj 2025. On behalf of over 115,000 Pakistani pilgrims as well as on my own behalf, I extend my warmest felicitations and heartfelt gratitude to The Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques His Majesty King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, and to my dear brother, His Royal Highness Crown Prince… — Shehbaz Sharif (@CMShehbaz) June 9, 2025 'Thank you for making this spiritual experience more comfortable and memorable for all those who performed Hajj this year,' Sharif wrote on social media platform X.

Pakistan, UK discuss strengthening cooperation in railways sector

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan's Railways Minister Hanif Abbasi and British High Commissioner Jane Marriott on Wednesday discussed bilateral cooperation between the two nations with a special focus on railways, state-run media reported. Pakistan's railway sector faces several challenges such as an aging infrastructure, outdated tracks, locomotives and signal systems. Poor maintenance and a lack of modern safety measures often contribute to train derailments and accidents. Notable tragedies include the 2005 Ghotki train disaster, which killed over 130 people and a 2021 train collision that left at least 65 people dead. As opposed to that, the UK has one of the densest railway networks in Europe with almost all major towns and cities connected by rail. 'Pakistan and the United Kingdom have emphasized joint measures to further strengthen their bilateral trade and economic relations, with special focus on the railways sector,' state-run media reported following Abbasi's meeting with Marriot in Islamabad. State broadcaster Radio Pakistan said Abbasi called for 'a comprehensive strategy' between Pakistan and the United Kingdom to develop and modernize the former's railway sector. 'He said Pakistan is ready to fully benefit from UK's expertise in modernizing the railways infrastructure in the country and improving performance of this sector,' Radio Pakistan said. Abbasi said the two countries would continue to work together on mutual interest railways projects that will benefit their economies and improve public transportation. Pakistan has recently attempted to improve its railway infrastructure to ensure economic growth and development. In March, Pakistan and United Arab Emirates (UAE) officials agreed to expand bilateral cooperation between the two countries in the railways sector. Abbasi had said Pakistan Railways is continuously working to improve its services through long-term agreements with domestic and international suppliers, emphasizing that Islamabad offers a business-friendly environment and presents significant opportunities for investors.

Pakistan urges Hajj pilgrims to follow Saudi directives on sacrifice, stoning of the devil

ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Hajj Mission Makkah has advised the country's pilgrims to follow the directives issued by Saudi Arabia concerning the stoning of the devil or 'Rami Al-Jamarat' and animal sacrifice rituals during the annual Islamic pilgrimage, state-run media reported on Monday. Hajj pilgrims take part in the symbolic stoning of the devil, which is among the final rites of the pilgrimage. Pilgrims throw pebbles at three pillars in Mina, performing the ritual during the three days of the Hajj starting on the 10th of Dhul Hijjah. State broadcaster Radio Pakistan reported that each Maktab will have designated timings for the act of stoning the devil on the 10th of Dhul Hijjah. 'Every 'Nazim' [administrator] is bound to ensure that the intending pilgrims perform this ritual as per their allocated time slot,' Radio Pakistan said. 'Therefore, all pilgrims are advised to proceed in groups under the supervision of their 'Nazim' as per schedule.' The state broadcaster also reported that the Saudi authorities have set the time for sacrificing animals for Pakistani Hujjaj on the night between the 10th and 11th of Dhul Hijjah at 12:30 am. 'Hence, all pilgrims are urged to complete the 'Rami' of the first day before midnight,' it said. 'Pakistani Mission has strongly urged the Hujjaj to strictly follow these instructions to avoid any untoward situation.' During the Hajj pilgrimage, which concludes this year on Monday, June 9, pilgrims are required to sacrifice an animal. Nearly 89,000 Pakistanis have traveled to Saudi Arabia under the government's Hajj scheme and over 23,620 Pakistanis are performing the Hajj through private tour operators.
