Australian basketball first as man charged over online racist abuse
Basketball Australia did not identify the player targeted, but News Corp newspapers and national broadcaster ABC said it was former NBA star Montrezl Harrell, who is currently contracted to the Adelaide 36ers.
The American power forward, who was drafted by the Houston Rockets, made his name with the Los Angeles Clippers.
Basketball Australia said it was the first-ever successful arrest for such an offence and "a landmark moment".
"There are laws in place to govern appropriate behaviour towards athletes, and it's important the public understands that," said a spokesman for BA's Integrity Unit.
"Taking a stand sends a clear message of zero tolerance and helps drive the cultural change needed to create a safe sport and respectful environment for everyone."
The man was charged with using a carriage service -- such as a phone, email or social media -- to menace, harass and/or offend. He was bailed to appear before a Melbourne court on August 15.
The 36ers said in a statement that the player who received the message "is aware of the arrest and is comfortable with the way the matter has been handled".

Struggling Wales hire Tandy as new head coach
Tandy is tasked with reviving Wales' fortunes in time for the 2027 Rugby World Cup in Australia. Wales were on a record 18-match losing run before finally ending that dismal streak on July 12 with a 31-22 victory over Japan in Kobe. Tandy will become the permanent successor to Warren Gatland on September 1 following almost six years as Scotland's defence coach. The 45-year-old Welshman's first match in charge will be on November 9 against Argentina in Cardiff. Wales also face Japan, New Zealand and world champions South Africa in the November internationals. "Becoming head coach of my home country is a massive honour and a privilege," Tandy said. "I am looking forward to playing a role in the rebuilding phase of Welsh rugby and taking the national team back to competing with the best countries in the world. "I am excited about the potential of Welsh rugby and the group of young, hardworking players we have." Tandy was head coach of Ospreys between 2012 and 2018, which included winning the PRO12 title in his first season, before serving as defence coach for Australian side the Waratahs. The former flanker was also part of Gatland's backroom staff for the British and Irish Lions' tour of South Africa in 2021. Welsh Rugby Union chief executive Abi Tierney said: "This is a keystone appointment for us. Steve fits the bill in terms of the affinity he will be able to create with a young group of players with huge potential, but also the galvanising effect we know he can have on the whole rugby ecosystem as a proud Welshman." Gatland's second spell as Wales boss ended in February after a 22-15 defeat to Italy in the second round of the Six Nations. Matt Sherratt took over on a temporary basis and oversaw defeats by Ireland, Scotland and England before leading the two-match tour of Japan, which began on July 5 with a 24-19 loss in Kitakyushu before the losing streak was broken a week later.

Valetini 'good to go' in huge Wallabies boost for second Lions Test
Valetini is usually one of the first names on Australia coach Joe Schmidt's team sheet, but a calf niggle forced him to watch their 27-19 first Test defeat from the sidelines. His immense physicality, strong ball carrying and deft offloading was sorely missed as the Lions back row of Tadhg Beirne, Tom Curry and Jack Conan dominated in Brisbane. "I had a good week last week with training and came through all right so, yeah, I'll be available for selection," Valetini said ahead of Saturday's second Test in Melbourne, his home city. "I thought I would've been a shoo-in for the first Test, but sort of a smart idea just to have a week off and get through some more training, a bit of more loading through the calf. "It feels good to go." Valetini is set to return in front of more than 90,000 fans at the vast Melbourne Cricket Ground. "I don't really feel pressure or anything," Valetini said of a match that the Wallabies must win to keep hopes of securing the three-Test series alive. "I feel like it's just another game of rugby and something I've been playing ever since I was young." Valetini is expected slot back into side at the expense of Nick Champion de Crespigny, while towering lock Will Skelton is also in line for a return after also shaking off a calf issue. Winner of the John Eales Medal in 2023 and 2024, an accolade bestowed on the best Australian player each season by his peers, Valetini admitted he was gutted when initially struck down by injury. "I was pretty down when I got injured and knowing I was going to miss the first Test as well," he said. "I had to put all my focus through my recovery and getting through all my exercise and trying to get the body right for the next two Tests." The Wallabies were slow off the mark in Brisbane, bossed by a dominant Lions in the first-half. But they fought back after the break and veteran prop James Slipper said they took a lot of heart from that. "There was disappointment clearly from the result at the weekend," said the former Australia captain. "But the feeling is there's a belief in the group that we were able to fight back into that game after being a fair stack down at the start. "So we've taken a lot of confidence and belief from what we can do. "Game two, it's another Test match, we know what's coming and it's about our preparation now and taking that belief into the game," he added. © 2025 AFP

Owen Farrell to captain Lions against Beale's Pasifika
The tourists have won all six games in Australia so far, including a polished 27-19 victory over the Wallabies in the first Test at Brisbane on Saturday. But with the second Test at the cavernous Melbourne Cricket Ground on Saturday, coach Andy Farrell is not risking any injuries to his first-choice stars. None of the Brisbane starting side are in the matchday 23 for the clash at Melbourne's Docklands Stadium on Tuesday against an untested team spearheaded by Wallabies great Kurtley Beale. That has opened the door to a host of players looking to make a late case to play a part in the second Test, including former England captain Farrell. He came off the bench for a solid cameo against a combined Australia-New Zealand side after his surprise call-up to replace the injured Elliot Daly. The 33-year-old now gets the chance to start and impress his father, head coach Andy Farrell, enough to earn a bench spot for the second Test in what will be his 20th Lions appearance. "This fixture gives players another opportunity to put their hand up for selection for the final two Tests," said Andy Farrell. "The coaches' minds are open when it comes to selection, they have to be with so many players performing and pushing for places and we want that to continue for the remaining two Tests. "This group know the level of performance that we will require against a First Nations Pasifika team that is packed with talent and power." Farrell will partner Ireland's Jamie Osborne in the centre, with Scotland's Ben White at scrum-half and England's Fin Smith the playmaker at 10. Fullback Blair Kinghorn returns from injury and forms an all-Scotland back three alongside Darcy Graham and Duhan van Der Merwe. Up front, 102-Test veteran hooker George, who was called up last week as cover for the concussed Luke Cowan-Dickie, will pack down with Scotland's Pierre Schoeman and Irishman Finlay Bealham. Ireland's James Ryan is partnered in the second row by Scot Scott Cummings while in the back, Wales captain Jac Morgan lines up alongside Ireland's Josh van der Flier and England's Henry Pollock. British Lions XV (15-1): Blair Kinghorn; Darcy Graham, Jamie Osborne, Owen Farrell (capt), Duhan van Der Merwe; Fin Smith, Ben White; Henry Pollock, Josh van der Flier, Jac Morgan; Scott Cummins, James Ryan; Finlay Bealham, Jamie George, Pierre Schoeman
