Australian basketball first as man charged over online racist abuse
Basketball Australia did not identify the player targeted, but News Corp newspapers and national broadcaster ABC said it was former NBA star Montrezl Harrell, who is currently contracted to the Adelaide 36ers.
The American power forward, who was drafted by the Houston Rockets, made his name with the Los Angeles Clippers.
Basketball Australia said it was the first-ever successful arrest for such an offence and "a landmark moment".
"There are laws in place to govern appropriate behaviour towards athletes, and it's important the public understands that," said a spokesman for BA's Integrity Unit.
"Taking a stand sends a clear message of zero tolerance and helps drive the cultural change needed to create a safe sport and respectful environment for everyone."
The man was charged with using a carriage service -- such as a phone, email or social media -- to menace, harass and/or offend. He was bailed to appear before a Melbourne court on August 15.
The 36ers said in a statement that the player who received the message "is aware of the arrest and is comfortable with the way the matter has been handled".

Steve fits the bill in terms of the affinity he will be able to create with a young group of players with huge potential, but also the galvanising effect we know he can have on the whole rugby ecosystem as a proud Welshman." Gatland's second spell as Wales boss ended in February after a 22-15 defeat to Italy in the second round of the Six Nations. Matt Sherratt took over on a temporary basis and oversaw defeats by Ireland, Scotland and England before leading the two-match tour of Japan, which began on July 5 with a 24-19 loss in Kitakyushu before the losing streak was broken a week later.

Valetini 'good to go' in huge Wallabies boost for second Lions Test
Valetini is usually one of the first names on Australia coach Joe Schmidt's team sheet, but a calf niggle forced him to watch their 27-19 first Test defeat from the sidelines. His immense physicality, strong ball carrying and deft offloading was sorely missed as the Lions back row of Tadhg Beirne, Tom Curry and Jack Conan dominated in Brisbane. "I had a good week last week with training and came through all right so, yeah, I'll be available for selection," Valetini said ahead of Saturday's second Test in Melbourne, his home city. "I thought I would've been a shoo-in for the first Test, but sort of a smart idea just to have a week off and get through some more training, a bit of more loading through the calf. "It feels good to go." Valetini is set to return in front of more than 90,000 fans at the vast Melbourne Cricket Ground. "I don't really feel pressure or anything," Valetini said of a match that the Wallabies must win to keep hopes of securing the three-Test series alive. "I feel like it's just another game of rugby and something I've been playing ever since I was young." Valetini is expected slot back into side at the expense of Nick Champion de Crespigny, while towering lock Will Skelton is also in line for a return after also shaking off a calf issue. But they fought back after the break and veteran prop James Slipper said they took a lot of heart from that. "But the feeling is there's a belief in the group that we were able to fight back into that game after being a fair stack down at the start. "So we've taken a lot of confidence and belief from what we can do.
