Bancroft's winning experience 'boosts' Gloucestershire
Gloucestershire's new red-ball captain Cameron Bancroft has an experience of winning that can "boost" his team-mates, says head coach Mark Alleyne. The Australian was named Gloucestershire's new captain last month for the 2025 County Championship campaign.Bancroft, who has played in 10 Test matches for Australia, has won three Sheffield Shield titles - the country's domestic first-class competition - with Western Australia."What he brings is experience of winning four-day competitions; over the last five, six years Western Australia have been prolific, so having someone who knows how to get over the line leading the group is another boost for the rest of the team," Alleyne told BBC Radio Bristol."They know he's been there, done it and there's nothing like that in sport. He sets a really good example, great professional, has the respect of everyone in the group and works well with the coaches."Gloucestershire finished seventh in Division Two in 2024, winning just two of their 14 matches - although six ended in draws.Alleyne, who is Gloucestershire's most decorated player, returned to the top job last season for a second spell. He said the team showed a "glimpse" of their potential in 2024. "We've got a group at the moment that the world's their oyster, these guys haven't reached potential yet," Alleyne said. "It's exciting in the batting and bowling groups and if you can put that together as a team, they can be really awesome. They showed a glimpse last year and I'm hoping that's just a start of what they can do."
'The players' ability is there to see'
At the end of last season, Alleyne said the campaign had been "massively disappointing" despite the club winning a first trophy in nine years when they claimed the T20 Blast title in September.Speaking before their opening County Championship match of 2025 away to Derbyshire starting on 4 April, Alleyne believes his squad can finish in the top two of the table and win promotion to Division One."We're good enough to finish in the top two out of eight teams in the competition, we're not going to hide away from it or try and dress it up any other way," he added. "That's what we really want this season and we'll be trying our best to make it happen."The players' ability is there for everyone to see but I now need to keep teasing a bit more performance out of them, which I think everyone is up for."

Conor McGregor's BKFC faces ban as Australian leader slams 'brutal' sport
The Irishman was confirmed as a part owner of Bare Knuckle Fighting Championship last year, but not everyone seems to be onboard with the promotion Conor McGregor has been dealt a huge blow after an Australian politician revealed he is leading calls for bare knuckle fighting to be permanently banned in the country. The Bare Knuckle Fighting Championship, co-owned by McGregor, was set to make its Australian debut in Perth this July. However, the WA Combat Sports Commission has rejected the application. In response to this development, Australian Opposition Leader Basil Zempilas is urging the State Government to completely outlaw the sport, asserting it has no place in Western Australia. "It was very clear that a significant majority of Western Australians did not want this brutal sport to be coming to Perth," He continued: "It should not have taken this long, and there are still lots of questions," said Zempilas. He further added: "We don't know what criteria was not met, or how the decision was reached. We don't know whether there were discussions between the Minister and the Commission, and it would appear the door is still open." Zempilas is convinced that a ban is the only appropriate measure to prevent future applications. "That's what we want. Clearly that's what the people of Western Australia want," the 53-year-old said. "It sets a bad example, there is very little demand. And it took the long way and a confusing way to get there, but I'm pleased that the common sense decision was ultimately reached." Last year, the former dual-weight UFC champion and his company "McGregor Sports and Entertainment" became part-owners of BKFC, which has since seen a stunning growth, staging events worldwide with McGregor often in attendance. However, not everyone is thrilled about the bare-knuckle fighting promotion. However, not everyone appears to be onboard with the promotion. Zempilas' comments were echoed by Prime Minister Anthony Albanese. Speaking to Triple M, Albanese said: "A bit of common sense - you've got to look after people's health a bit and maybe save people from themselves. I just think we've got to be much more conscious about health issues." When asked directly about bare knuckle fighting, the Prime Minister replied: "It's a bit crazy!" BKFC President David Feldman had previously insisted that the event would still go ahead. The lineup was set to feature ex-UFC heavyweight Ben Rothwell against Aussie powerhouse Alex 'Godly Strong' Simon, and 'Rowdy' Bec Rawlings slated to face Jade event was set to take place at RAC Arena on July 19, but with calls for a ban heating up, it seems very likely that the BKFC will struggle to host an event in Australia. Recently, McGregor vowed to compete in BKFC despite the controversy. "Yes. Yes. The warrior spirit burns strong inside me," he said at a BKFC press conference in Italy earlier this year. "For sure. If you think I'm up here giving these speeches and leading these men into battle and I won't step in there myself, think again. For sure. Conor McGregor will fight in Bare Knuckle Fighting Championship – mark my words." "I would wish to be the Bare Knuckle world champion. That is a significant belt to hold in your career. Nobody from boxing to mixed martial arts can speak nothing bad on a Bare Knuckle Fighting Championship world champion. So for sure, I'd be coming in looking for the world title. "There are many bouts, showcase bouts you could say. Michael Perry, Mike Perry. You could say Jeremy Stephens. You could say a rematch against Eddie Alvarez. You could say many matches. But the lightweight title, who is the champion right now, lightweight or welterweight? Let's see. I'm open. We'll see when it comes."

Tottenham face huge Thomas Frank bill as Ange Postecoglou sack decision looms
EXCLUSIVE: Tottenham are weighing up the future of Ange Postecoglou, with Brentford manager Thomas Frank now emerging as the leading contender to replace the Australian boss Tottenham will face a staggering bill in excess of £10m to hire Thomas Frank. Brentford boss Frank is the leading contender to replace Ange Postecoglou, whose future is in grave doubt despite leading Tottenham to Europa League glory. Frank has two years left on his contract and a big buy-out clause was written into the deal when he signed his last deal in December 2022. The Danish boss is one of the most highly-rated managers in the Premier League and Brentford clearly do not want to lose him and the buy-out reflects his value to the club. There is also a belief that Frank gave a gentleman's agreement to stay for one more year at Brentford, although that would clearly be tested if anyone meets the buy-out clause which would allow him to go. Frank would have no shortage of offers not just from the Premier League if he decided to leave Brentford this summer but Tottenham would be a big opportunity. They won the Europa League, are back in the Champions League and have a world class stadium with money to spend. However, Tottenham boss Daniel Levy has yet to give a final decision on Postecoglou's future and sacking him and his staff would cost around £5m plus there is also a £2m bonus for the Aussie after he won the Europa League. The cost is mounting up for Tottenham amid a potentially big summer of change - and would grow even bigger if they decide to go for Frank. That may put off Levy as that would be a huge compensation and also a big 'transfer fee' in managerial terms. Tottenham are believed to have sounded out Frank while Fulham boss Marco Silva is also a candidate while Bournemouth are battling to keep Andoni Iraola. Postecoglou was appointed two years ago. There is a feeling that Tottenham's direction has been heavily influenced by his agent group Base. There has already been signs of a shake-up at the club with the departure of Levy's long term ally and trusted director Donna Cullen. Former Arsenal chief Vinai Venkatesham has also started work as Tottenham's new chief executive and Fabio Paratici looks set to return after serving a ban from a punishment from his time at Juventus. Last month, Frank appeared to brush off suggestions he could leave Brentford this summer. He said: 'Right now, of course, I am committed. I just lost to Fulham, our local rivals, so [I am] fuming in every aspect. So yes, I am committed like I have always been.' Postecoglou meanwhile has insisted he is preparing to remain in his post for the start of the new season. He said: "I'll be honest, I've been finding it really weird talking about my future when we've done something unprecedented. "I've had to answer the questions because no one else at the club is kind of in the position to do so, I guess. But I can't answer that question about me and my future, and part of me is kind of thinking, well, why have I been asked that question? But it is what it is. "And I've got no doubt, though, that this could be a real sort of defining moment for this club because wherever I've been, I've kind of made an impact where I've brought success to a club that hasn't had for a while."
