Conor McGregor's BKFC faces ban as Australian leader slams 'brutal' sport
Conor McGregor has been dealt a huge blow after an Australian politician revealed he is leading calls for bare knuckle fighting to be permanently banned in the country.
The Bare Knuckle Fighting Championship, co-owned by McGregor, was set to make its Australian debut in Perth this July. However, the WA Combat Sports Commission has rejected the application. In response to this development, Australian Opposition Leader Basil Zempilas is urging the State Government to completely outlaw the sport, asserting it has no place in Western Australia.
"It was very clear that a significant majority of Western Australians did not want this brutal sport to be coming to Perth," He continued: "It should not have taken this long, and there are still lots of questions," said Zempilas. He further added: "We don't know what criteria was not met, or how the decision was reached. We don't know whether there were discussions between the Minister and the Commission, and it would appear the door is still open."
Zempilas is convinced that a ban is the only appropriate measure to prevent future applications. "That's what we want. Clearly that's what the people of Western Australia want," the 53-year-old said. "It sets a bad example, there is very little demand. And it took the long way and a confusing way to get there, but I'm pleased that the common sense decision was ultimately reached."
Last year, the former dual-weight UFC champion and his company "McGregor Sports and Entertainment" became part-owners of BKFC, which has since seen a stunning growth, staging events worldwide with McGregor often in attendance. However, not everyone is thrilled about the bare-knuckle fighting promotion.
However, not everyone appears to be onboard with the promotion. Zempilas' comments were echoed by Prime Minister Anthony Albanese. Speaking to Triple M, Albanese said: "A bit of common sense - you've got to look after people's health a bit and maybe save people from themselves. I just think we've got to be much more conscious about health issues." When asked directly about bare knuckle fighting, the Prime Minister replied: "It's a bit crazy!"
BKFC President David Feldman had previously insisted that the event would still go ahead. The lineup was set to feature ex-UFC heavyweight Ben Rothwell against Aussie powerhouse Alex 'Godly Strong' Simon, and 'Rowdy' Bec Rawlings slated to face Jade Masson-Wong.The event was set to take place at RAC Arena on July 19, but with calls for a ban heating up, it seems very likely that the BKFC will struggle to host an event in Australia.
Recently, McGregor vowed to compete in BKFC despite the controversy. "Yes. Yes. The warrior spirit burns strong inside me," he said at a BKFC press conference in Italy earlier this year. "For sure. If you think I'm up here giving these speeches and leading these men into battle and I won't step in there myself, think again. For sure. Conor McGregor will fight in Bare Knuckle Fighting Championship – mark my words."
"I would wish to be the Bare Knuckle world champion. That is a significant belt to hold in your career. Nobody from boxing to mixed martial arts can speak nothing bad on a Bare Knuckle Fighting Championship world champion. So for sure, I'd be coming in looking for the world title.
"There are many bouts, showcase bouts you could say. Michael Perry, Mike Perry. You could say Jeremy Stephens. You could say a rematch against Eddie Alvarez. You could say many matches. But the lightweight title, who is the champion right now, lightweight or welterweight? Let's see. I'm open. We'll see when it comes."

Ben Doak has handed Scotland head coach Steve Clarke a timely boost by netting for Liverpool in a dazzing pre-season display against Athletic Bilbao. The 19-year-old winger is fit again after injury and was handed a start in the first of two friendlies which were staged back-to-back at Anfield on Monday night against the Spanish side. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad The opening match, featuring a mix of first-team stars and youngsters, saw the Reds claim a 4-1 victory with Doak on the scoresheet and also having a major hand in another goal. The second match also saw the hosts emerge victorious 3-2 thanks to Mo Salah and a Cody Gakpo double. Ben Doak celebrates scoring for Liverpool in the friendly win over Athletic Bilbao at Anfield. (Photo by) | Getty Images In match one, Liverpool went two goals up inside five minutes as another emerging talent - 16-year-old England youth Rio Ngumoha - opened the scoring before Doak provided the cross for Ngumoha to nod down for Darwin Nunez to add a second. Doak twice went close to adding a third, being denied by the woodwork from a tight angle before a sensational half-volley from 25 yards drew a diving save from Bilbao goalkeeper Alex Padilla. But the former Celtic youth got his goal three minutes before half-time as he burst past his marker in the box before firing an effort across goal which Padilla only succeeded in diverting into the net when it appeared to be going wide. The teenager has impressed for Scotland since being handed the first of his six caps in September last year and was sorely missed in the Nations League play-off loss to Greece in March as well as the defeat to Iceland in June. He spent last season on loan at Middlesbrough in the Championship where he had a big impact with three goals and seven assists in 24 appearances prior to suffering a thigh injury in February which ended his season prematurely and ruled him out of the last two Scotland camps. Doak will now be raring to go for the upcoming internationals but where he is playing his club football by the time the crucial fixtures come around remains to be seen. Kyogo out of sync at Birmingham as Chris Davies makes honest admission on ex Celtic hero
The £10million Japan striker hasn't hit the ground running and could start the season on the bench for Blues Ex-Celtic hero Kyogo could start the Championship campaign on the bench after being dropped for Birmingham's final pre-season warm-up. The Japanese striker ended his six-month nightmare at Rennes by joining the Blues in a £10million switch earlier this summer. But Kyogo hasn't hit the ground running at St Andrew's. The former Hoops goal machine was left out of the starting XI against Nottingham Forest on Saturday and his replacement, Jay Stansfield, netted the winner as Blues rounded off their summer programme with a 1-0 win. Kyogo made a 30-minute cameo in the second-half but had few opportunities and looked out of sync with his new teammates. Boss Chris Davies says the 30-year-old's clever off-the-ball runs aren't being spotted and admits more work is needed in the training ground. He said: "We analyse every minute of every game and try to highlight things, and he does make very, very good runs and a lot of them. "There are times where he's not been seen or found, but I want him to continue to run and continue to play with that energy. "You can see that he's quick. There was one where he pressed the goalkeeper and you could see his change of pace. "It is all still new for Kyogo coming into a new country, a new league and a new team, but you could see quite clearly what qualities he does have with the movement and the speed, and he's a very good finisher, although we haven't created too many chances for him in pre-season." Newly-promoted Birmingham kick off their quest for Premier League promotion in this weekend's curtain-raiser at home to Ipswich Town. And big-money signing Kyogo looks set to start the season on the bench - a far from ideal start at his new club after being frozen out at Rennes. Sparkly fizzy, and on the rocks. With Irish lemon and lime, also! For adding. ICE COLD! 'Our Coca Cola factory is just 5 minutes away on the long mile road, walking distance, from the black forge inn! ''GIVE THAT BOY A CAN OF COKE!' You are going to LOVE IT! The unique, true, IRISH EXPERIENCE!' Alongside the social media message, Conor included an AI image of himself and Trump dressed as medieval knights around a table of meat and potatoes. In the image, Trump is drinking a can of Coca Cola. The fighter's pub was recently set on fire, with authorities treating the blaze as criminal damage. Meanwhile last week the ex-MMA star lost his attempt to overturn a jury's order that he compensate a woman who accused him of raping her. The court rejected the appeal in its entirety. Nikita Hand alleged that Conor sexually assaulted her on December 9, 2018. He was found liable in November and three Dublin judges rejected all five grounds of the MMA fighter's appeal. Conor was ordered to pay nearly €250,000 ($290,000), plus costs after Hand accused him of raping her at a hotel in Dublin in 2018. He denied the allegation and said he had 'fully consensual sex'. He also denied causing bruising to the plaintiff. Conor was not present for last week's decision, with Hand claiming she had been 'retraumatized' by the appeal. She said: 'To every survivor out there, I know how hard it is but please don't be silenced. You deserve to be heard. You also deserve justice.' Trump hosted the Irish MMA star and his family in the Oval Office on St Patrick's Day, with McGregor even vowing to raise concerns over immigration in Ireland with the president. The star, who also attended Trump's inauguration in January, praised the president's 'inspiring' work ethic.
