ABU DHABI (WAM) Mubadala, the Abu Dhabi sovereign investor, and Abu Dhabi National Energy Company (TAQA), one of the largest listed integrated utilities in Europe, the Middle East and Africa, have completed the acquisition of a gas-fired power generation plant at the Talimarjan Power Complex in Uzbekistan.Mubadala and TAQA each hold a 40 per cent stake in the 875 MW TPP1 combined-cycle gas-fired plant through a newly established project company, Talimarjan Power Plant 1 LLC. Both TAQA and Mubadala also hold a 40% stake in the Talimarjan Operations & Maintenance LLC (O&M), which was established to operate the plant.Uzbekistan's JSC 'Talimarjan Issiqlik Elektr Stansiyasi' (TIES) holds the remaining 20 per cent stakes in both the project company and the O&M entity. This transaction supports investments into the privatisation of Uzbekistan's power sector. It follows a strategic partnership between the Governments of Uzbekistan and the United Arab Emirates whereby Mubadala and TAQA will bring their global power sector expertise to the local power market in Uzbekistan. The 875 MW TPP1 plant has a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with JSC 'Uzenergosotish' (UES) (successor power purchaser to JSC 'National Electric Grid of Uzbekistan') for 25 years and plays a critical part in meeting demand for electricity in Uzbekistan as the country continues to experience rapid population and economic growth.Hammad Rahman, Head of Asia Pacific Infrastructure at Mubadala, said, 'Mubadala is committed to supporting countries across the world to meet their energy needs while reducing carbon emissions. Efficient natural gas-fired powered plants such as TPP1 will play an important part in enabling the transition to cleaner sources of energy.Uzbekistan is recording a significant growth in demand for power, and Mubadala looks forward to working with TAQA and our local partner TIES to ensure communities and businesses across the country have access to reliable, affordable and secure power supply that supports progress and socioeconomic development.'Frank Possmeier, Chief Investment Officer, Generation at TAQA, said, 'TAQA is pleased to collaborate with Mubadala and TIES in acquiring this vital asset that plays a crucial role in Uzbekistan's journey towards a privatised energy sector. As a low carbon power and water champion, TAQA will leverage its extensive experience and expertise to help Uzbekistan meet its growing energy needs while continuing to invest in this critical sector. Our stake in TPP1 demonstrates progress in delivering on our 2030 targets which aim to grow our power generation capacity to 150 GW and strengthens our operation and maintenance capabilities which is also a pivotal element of our strategy. We are committed to enhancing efficiency and ensuring TPP1 runs as a world-class power plant as part of our expanding portfolio as we continue to provide power to the communities we serve.'The acquisition of the TPP1 project brings direct foreign investment into Uzbekistan's thriving energy sector and will also support local development of social infrastructure and knowledge sharing initiatives aimed at capacity building and sustainable community development.
TAQA's Generation business is targeting 150 GW of gross power generation by 2030, with around 100 GW of that capacity coming from renewable power sources through its leading stake in Masdar's renewable energy operations.

Mubadala Capital reportedly partnering Cain for luxury real estate investment

Abu Dhabi's Mubadala Capital is reported to be looking at deploying billions of dollars into global luxury real estate. According to a Bloomberg report, based on speaking to people familiar with the matter, Mubadala Capital is teaming up with Cain International for the new venture. The sources, who asked not to be identified, told Bloomberg that Mubadala Capital and Cain, a $13 billion asset manager, have each committed new capital to the partnership, which will seek to bolster and expand some of their existing portfolios, and make new investments into luxury property. Representatives for Mubadala Capital and Cain declined to comment. Cain is a partnership between Chief Executive Officer Jonathan Goldstein and billionaire Todd Boehly's Eldridge Industries. Goldstein spoke about the partnership with Mubadala Capital in a recent Bloomberg TV interview without disclosing details, and the firms are both investors in luxury hotel brand Aman Group. The alternative asset management firm had earlier this year sold a minority stake in itself to TWG Global, an investment firm led by Guggenheim Partners founder Mark Walter and financier Thomas Tull, in a deal that included a $10 billion syndicated investment in TWG. Last year in November, the Abu Dhabi asset management company also acquired Canadian mutual fund manager CI Financial, and is planning to take it private.

Egypt to tender new gas concession in Red Sea next month: Report

Egypt's Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources will issue a new tender for gas exploration in the Red Sea in September, according to a news report. The bidding comes after three oil companies, including Shell, Chevron, and Mubadala, relinquished their gas exploration concessions in the Red Sea earlier this year after seismic surveys in their concessions yielded uneconomic results, Ashraq News reported, citing a senior government official. Four major areas will be put up for bidding for global companies in the Red Sea, the report said. The government will offer incentives for bid winners. Cairo needs 6.2 billion cubic feet per day, while its daily production stands at 4 billion cubic feet. The government seeks to increase natural gas production to 5 billion cubic feet per day by year-end, the report said. (Writing by P Deol; Editing by Anoop Menon) (

UAE's Emirates Global Aluminium considers reviving its IPO plan

Emirates Global Aluminium (EGA) is considering moving ahead with an IPO after several years of hinting at the possibility, with the region's biggest aluminium producer tapping banks for proposals, according to a Bloomberg report. The listing that could raise several billion dollars, the same report added, naming Rothschild & Co. as advising the firm, according to people familiar with the development. EGA was formed in 2013 following the merger of state-owned companies Dubai Aluminium (Dubal) and Abu Dhabi's Emirates Aluminium. The new entity is jointly owned by Abu Dhabi's Mubadala Investment Co. and the Investment Corporation of Dubai, with plants in both emirates. The Bloomberg report said the listing venue has yet to be determined and remains 'a key question for the deal.' In a statement to Bloomberg, EGA said no decision has been made on a potential IPO, adding that the company is 'exploring potential requirements to ensure readiness, should the shareholders choose to proceed with an IPO in the future.' EGA shareholders have been mulling an IPO for years, with the company's CEO Abdulla Jassem Kalban telling reporters in 2018 that an IPO was on track for the second half of the year. In a 2023 interview with Bloomberg News, Mubadala CEO Khaldoon Al Mubarak said EGA could sell shares to the public 'maybe this year.' EGA has had a busy year with the announcement of its first new primary aluminium production plant in the US since 1980, a $4 billion project. The company has also faced setback in Africa as early as this week with Guinea revoking the bauxite concession awarded to a subsidiary of EGA and transferred it to a newly created state-backed firm, citing violations of its mining code, according to a decree.
