Ruben Amorim doubts emerge as Man Utd told reality – 'They'll probably sack him'
Former Liverpool and Bayern Munich midfielder Didi Hamann is doubtful that Ruben Amorim will walk away from Manchester United for free, claiming the club will have to sack him to get rid
Ruben Amorim has claimed he will walk away from Manchester United if the "board and the fans feel I'm not the right guy". But one ex- Premier League star has made clear he doesn't believe the Red Devils head coach.
Even more pressure has been piled on Amorim and the rest of the squad following their 1-0 loss to Tottenham Hotspur in the Europa League final on Wednesday. The Red Devils were favourites in Bilbao, but a scrappy Brennan Johnson goal on the stroke of half time sealed the deal for Spurs.
It handed Tottenham their first piece of silverware in 17 years, while for United, the loss means they will finish this season trophyless and without any European glory since 2017.
Post-match, Amorim told the media that he would walk away from the job at Old Trafford if the club's hierarchy and supporters show they believe he isn't in a place to take the team any further – but he still feels he is the man for the job.
The 40-year-old said: "But I will not quit again. I am confident in my job. As you see, I will not change anything in the way I do things.
"In this moment, I am not here to defend myself. It's not my style. I have nothing to show to the fans. In this moment [I need] a little bit of faith."
Despite this bold claim, former Liverpool star Didi Hamann isn't convinced by Amorim's words of belief and confidence. The ex-Germany international, who had stints at Anfield as well as with Manchester City and Newcastle United, is adamant that the Red Devils will have to sack Amorim and pay up his wages if they really want a change in leadership next season.
Speaking to BettingLounge.co.uk, Hamann said: "Walking out on Manchester United would mean Ruben Amorim forfeits three years of wages and I don't think we will see a manager do that.
"If they want to get rid of them, they're probably going to sack him."
Hamann also observed that the position the United players find themselves in is a tough one, and that the boss may be running out of messages of belief for a side that is winless in its last eight games.
He added: "The thing is you go there, you've got ideas, and things have to work pretty quick because then people believe you, people follow you.
"Now, if you get beat every week, sometimes you run out of things to say because you can't say to the lads: 'Listen lads, was a one-off, we're on the right path.' And you get beat again, what are you gonna say?
"If it happens five or six times, sometimes you just run out of things to say. I think that's the stage where it is now."
Since Amorim joined in November 2024, United have been dumped out of three separate cup competitions, dropped from 13th to 16th place in the Premier League, and been defeated in the Europa League final by fellow domestic strugglers Spurs.
While their results in recent times in Europe have shown hope, including 3-0 and 4-1 wins over Athletic Club, fans are growing restless with the lack of success and real signs of progress around a club that was once so dominant in English football.
Club captain Bruno Fernandes has backed Amorim to bring United back on top of the perch, as he said: "We just agreed that he's the right man. He has done a lot of good things. We know that the manager is looked at by the results. Obviously we see more than that as players.
"We know for everyone it will be about him bringing back the positivity in the club, trying to bring the club back to fight for trophies, fight for the big trophies. And we all agree that he's the right man."

How Jobe is morphing into Jude: Bellingham brothers are following same path thanks to plan mapped out by their police sergeant father and doting mother with younger sibling turning his back on Premier League
Bellingham. One of the biggest names in the footballing world right now. Jude is the first of the Bellingham fold that comes to mind, having gone from Birmingham to the Bernabeu and rising to global fame along the way. At just 21-years-old, Bellingham has now completed his second domestic season with Real Madrid, playing alongside the likes of Kylian Mbappe and Vinicius Jr. Bought for £88.5m by Los Blancos, Bellingham has been performing at superb levels both for club and country, continuing to be at the forefront of new England manager Thomas Tuchel 's plans. Yet, Jude is not the only Bellingham to be making a name for himself - with younger brother Jobe set to follow his older brother down a similar career path amid an impending move to German giants Borussia Dortmund. But, what is it that's lead to the striking similarities between the two? Well, Jobe and Jude have always maintained a close relationship, with family being a centrepiece for the Bellingham clan. Jobe's big brother Jude Bellingham previously played for Dortmund between 2020 and 2023 The brothers may steal the spotlight but the importance of their parents cannot be forgotten given just how essential they were in the early stages of their sons' careers. The Bellingham's ferried both Jobe and Jude to football matches growing up and the pair continue to have an active presence in the boys' lives. When Jude moved to Madrid, Mark, a former non-league striker, stayed at home with Jobe to support his development while mother Denise went to the Spanish capital. Denise, who works in human resources, manages her son's finances, allowing the pair to focus on their football. Jude even mentioned once that his mother, who resides with him in a shared flat in Madrid, makes his bed and cooks his meals. Mark has also had an important impact on the boys' life, being a key role model during their youth. A retired police sergeant for West Midlands Police, Mark introduced both Jude and Jobe to football and gave them tips on how to improve and how to deal with the pressures of football. With 700 goals in 900 appearances in the non-league, it is clear to see where the boys got their talent from, as Mark has been the catalyst for his boys falling in love with the sport. The family have always maintained a close relationship and helped shape their early careers Jude told the The Football Association: 'We talk about footballing heroes, and my dad was like my first. 'When you go and watch him play every week in non-league, you know it's not the Premier League or anything, but seeing the way that he played and the atmosphere, it made me fall in love with football so he was probably my first hero.' The Bellingham's consistently support eachother such as when Jude and his parents flew in to watch Jobe playing in the England Under-21s back in November 2024. Jobe has benefitted greatly from his parents' support just like Jude has, and the move to Borussia Dortmund marks a major step in his playing career. His family will be with him every step of the way as the 19-year-old ventures into a new country and new league, competing at the top for one of Germany's best teams. The 19-year-old will follow in Jude's footsteps and join Dortmund, signing on a five-year deal. Just as his brother did, Jobe started at boyhood club Birmingham, progressing through the academy to play for the senior team. He made 25 appearances for the Blues before Sunderland picked up the young starlet for less than £1.5m, which seems an absolute steal now. Stourbridge's finest became a spearhead of the Black Cats' midfield, making 90 appearances other two seasons, including propelling the side to a return to the Premier League after an eight-year wait. His outstanding performances in the Championship deservedly won him the EFL Young Player of the Season, an accolade his older brother won when he was at Birmingham. Who knows, pending the success of his spell with Borussia Dortmund, could Jobe and Jude play together under the lights of the Santiago Bernabeu? Only time will tell.

Liverpool star pushes for transfer exit ahead of imminent Florian Wirtz arrival
Liverpool are closing in on a club-record deal for Bayer Leverkusen star Florian Wirtz, but the German's arrival could spell the end for another of Arne Slot's players Federico Chiesa is set to push for a summer exit from Liverpool, with Florian Wirtz closing in on a move to Anfield. Chiesa joined the Reds last summer in a £10million deal from Juventus. But he has found his opportunities on Merseyside limited in the extreme. The Italian made just 14 appearances in all competitions, registering only two goals, with Arne Slot preferring Mohamed Salah and Cody Gakpo on the wings. Chiesa was handed just one Premier League start and even that only came in the penultimate game of the campaign, after Liverpool had wrapped up the title. The 27-year-old was generally seen as the sixth-choice attacking option by Slot. He could slip even further down the pecking order after Liverpool complete their business this summer. The Reds are pushing hard to sign Bayer Leverkusen star Wirtz in what would be a club record deal. They submitted an improved offer for the German on Saturday and an agreement is expected to be reached. That has placed Chiesa in a difficult position as bids to return to the Italy squad in time for next summer's World Cup. It is understood that with Wirtz on his way in, Chiesa is now looking to cut his stay with Liverpool short. The attacker's priority is on securing a move back to his native Italy. While he loves Liverpool as a club and city, his limited game time has become a serious issue. Several Serie A sides have already started talks and are seeking to be kept informed on any room for a deal. Chiesa's decision to seek an exit comes as somewhat of a U-turn from the 27-year-old. On Friday, he insisted he was happy on Merseyside and that he would be happy to remain with the Reds. He told Corriere dello Sport: 'The year is over. But it's an experience I would do again. Soon I will sit down at the table with the club, Fali (Ramadani, his agent) and my family to find the best solution. I wouldn't mind staying in Liverpool at all. "You accept the choices as a professional and you move on. In the first few months there were many difficulties, if you think that I arrived in Liverpool on August 26 and found myself catapulted to another planet, with other teammates, without having trained with them. "At the beginning I felt the frustration of the radical change and of being far behind the group, then there was the injury. Could I start to discuss the choices of Slot who has always been very respectful towards me, as well as the club? The desire to play was there, I put it aside, I understood the situation." The news regarding Chiesa comes as Liverpool submitted an improved bid for Wirtz. The new offer is for £100m to be paid to Leverkusen upfront, with an extra £13m in add-ons. That is an improvement on the original £109m bid Liverpool submitted, with the Reds having no intention of agreeing to the £126.4m price tag Leverkusen have slapped on the playmaker.

Florian Wirtz's staggering Liverpool salary demands as talks reach crucial stage
Florian Wirtz will become Liverpool's second-best paid player behind Mohamed Salah if he completes a record-breaking transfer from Bayer Leverkusen in the coming days Florian Wirtz is set to treble his wages if he seals a record transfer to Liverpool, with the Germany playmaker expecting to bank an eye-watering £355,000-per-week. The Premier League champions have submitted a third bid - £100m up front with £15m extra in add-ons - that Bayer Leverkusen look set to reject as they hold out for an estimated £124m up front. But talks remain active between the clubs and a report in Bild says that the Bundesliga player of the season will also become the Reds' second best-paid player if he rocks up at Anfield - behind Mohamed Salah 's £400,000 but ahead of Virgil van Dijk's £350,000. Wirtz, 22, has made it clear that Liverpool is the destination he wants and Manchester City have stepped back from their initial interest. Sporting director Richard Hughes is at the forefront of the negotiations and Wirtz is prepared to jet in for a medical next week after featuring for his national team against France in Sunday afternoon's UEFA Nations League third-place play-off. On Friday Leverkusen published images promoting their pre-season tour to Brazil - from July 14 to 24 - featuring an image of Wirtz. The club will use the training facilities of Flamengo while in Rio de Janeiro. But there is a growing expectation that he will be leaving the Bundesliga's second-placed team with Bild saying that the player has already agreed a contract until the summer of 2030 while talks around the fee continue. Liverpool have already completed the signing of full back Jeremie Frimpong - their replacement for Real Madrid-departing Trent Alexander-Arnold - from Leverkusen and are looking to seal a £45m deal for Bournemouth 's Milos Kerkez in the coming days. Arne Slot's squad is also likely to be bolstered with a new centre forward amid doubts around the future of Darwin Nunez. The Uruguayan has struggled to settle in two seasons at the club and remains linked with a switch to Atletico Madrid, whose head coach Diego Simeone is a major fan. Earlier this week former Reds striker Emile Heskey claimed that the club "have got to" strengthen at No9 ahead of next season's attempted defence of their Premier League title.
