South Korea court to hold July 9 hearing on ex-leader Yoon's detention warrant
SEOUL : A Seoul court plans to hold a hearing on Wednesday to review a request by special prosecutors to detain former South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol, a court official said on Monday.
The special counsel team investigating Yoon's martial law declaration in December has filed a request to the Seoul Central District Court to detain Yoon on allegations of abuse of power and obstruction of justice.
Yoon has been accused of mobilising presidential guards to stop authorities from arresting him in January. He eventually was taken into custody but released from jail after 52 days on technical grounds.
The special prosecution that kicked off its investigation after new leader Lee Jae Myung was elected in June has been looking into additional charges against Yoon, who is already on trial for insurrection related to his short-lived martial law.
The detention warrant request was made on the grounds of the risk of him being a flight risk and concerns that he might interfere with witnesses linked to his case, local media reported, citing a special prosecutor' request.
Yoon's lawyers have rejected the allegations against him.

In a video on social media, Chang took further shots at an 'irresponsible politician' for stoking tensions during the Merdeka month. 'It's not only irresponsible, it is an act of bullying. Everyone knows who I am talking about.' His remarks appeared to be about Umno Youth chief Dr Akmal Saleh, who led a group to a hardware shop in Penang after its owner was reported to have accidentally hung the national flag upside down. 'We are a nation and society governed by the rule of law. If there is a problem, lodge a police report and let the authorities take action. 'You are not an enforcement agency. You cannot just bring a group of people to someone's shop, disrupt their business and bully them,' Chang said.

Fraudsters turn to TikTok and AI as scams hit Malaysia's youth hardest
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 16 — Fraud syndicates in Malaysia are exploiting social media and artificial intelligence (AI) to deploy sophisticated scams that blend child sexual exploitation, extortion and illegal content sales, with teenagers as their primary victims. Malaysian Cyber Consumers Association (MCCA) president Siraj Jalil said scam tactics have dramatically evolved over the past decade, from traditional Macau, romance and parcel scams to complex, multi-layered cybercrimes. He highlighted a scam involving 'sugar mummy' service offers on TikTok to lure teenagers, coercing them to share personal content classified as Child Sexual Exploitation Material (C-SET). Victims are then extorted for thousands of ringgit to avoid public exposure. 'Even after ransom payments, syndicates continue selling the compromising material on platforms like Telegram to paedophile communities,' Siraj told Bernama Radio today. He also warned social media merchants face new risks of being falsely accused when scammers duplicate their ads, deceive buyers and exploit buyer information to defraud the genuine sellers. When victims report fraud, the legitimate merchants' accounts may be frozen under suspicion, he added. Siraj also noted modern scams increasingly use AI-generated fake content, leaked data from major tech companies like Meta, and social engineering to study victim behaviour. To address these threats, the National Scam Response Centre (NSRC) now operates 24/7 with an expanded cybercrime mandate. He urged parents to closely monitor their children's online activity and called on the government to provide AI literacy education for the public. Negeri Sembilan civil servants told to fly Jalur Gemilang at home
The call to display the Jalur Gemilang is aimed at fostering patriotism in conjunction with the national month, Negeri Sembilan menteri besar Aminuddin Harun said. (Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : The Negeri Sembilan government has made it mandatory for department heads and civil servants in the state to fly the Jalur Gemilang and state flags at their homes until Sept 16. Menteri besar Aminuddin Harun said department heads, including those living outside of the state, are required to display the two flags at their homes. He said other civil servants must fly at least the Jalur Gemilang. Aminuddin said the state secretary's office had issued a circular on the matter two days ago to nearly 7,000 state civil servants in conjunction with this year's National Day celebrations. 'This is part of our efforts to foster patriotism in conjunction with the national month,' Bernama quoted him as saying after chairing a state executive council meeting at Wisma Negeri today. He also said all local governments have been told to be more creative in displaying flags to enliven this year's National Day celebrations. 'Don't just hang them or place them on poles. That's how it was 10 or 20 years ago. Let's change our approach and create a livelier atmosphere,' he said. He, however, said the display of the flags must be carried out respectfully and in honour of the symbol of the nation's sovereignty.
