Air India ends Imphal operations, AI Express to take over

Time of India5 hours ago

Guwahati: Amid operational difficulties and technical issues causing significant delays at Guwahati airport over two days, Air India ceased full-service operations from Imphal International Airport in the northeast from Monday.
Officials indicated this was a strategic decision.
While AAI senior officials noted increased precautionary aircraft inspections across the country, including the northeast, aviation sector sources clarified that Air India's withdrawal from Imphal stemmed from strategic considerations rather than security or technical issues. An aviation industry source said services ended on Monday due to route optimisation.
The source added that Air India's budget carrier, Air India Express, intends to operate these previously served routes from Imphal International Airport.
"In non-metro cities like Imphal, Air India Express offers more suitable fares that match the budget of the flyers. Air India Express is planning to gradually take over those routes on which Air India services were discontinued from Imphal. But the introduction of flights by Air India Express will be based on market demands," a source in Air India Express told TOI.

The official clarified that the withdrawal of Air India from Imphal is not linked to any security-related issues following the Ahmedabad plane crash.
The northeast operations for both airlines faced challenges recently. A technical fault in a Kolkata-bound Air India Express aircraft on Saturday night led to about 18-hour delay for passengers, causing operational issues at Guwahati Airport. Subsequently, a Guwahati-Hyderabad flight was cancelled at 11 pm on Sunday due to operational constraints, prompting passenger protests at the airport.
"On June 15, Guwahati-Hyderabad - scheduled departure was at 13:40, which was revised to 23:00 and later cancelled due to operational reasons. Multiple options were given to guests. Guests who chose to go by the next day's flights were provided with hotel accommodation in Guwahati. Meals were also served to all guests," Air India Express said in response to a query by TOI. It stated that on Monday, the additional flight on Guwahati-Hyderabad departed at 12:40 pm.
"The regular service on Guwahati-Hyderabad departed on time today at its usual time of 13:40. The aircraft was a Boeing 737-8," it added.
The Imphal International Airport authorities penned an emotional note on Sunday evening, calling it "Farewell to a Legacy: Final Moments of Air India at Imphal International Airport." "As it took its final departure, an era of Air India operations at Imphal came to a close," read the note on its social media page.
"These poignant final moments capture the heartfelt farewell as the 'Big Brother' bid adieu to Imphal International Airport after years of dedicated service.
With a legacy rooted in reliability, resilience, and a deep connection with the people of Manipur, Air India's departure truly marks the end of an era," it added.
In the picture, an emotional Air India employee was seen waving goodbye, tears gently rolling down, while the "Big Brother" — Air India — cast one last look at the upcoming new terminal building and ATS complex, as if offering a silent blessing. "As the aircraft taxied out, the younger brother, AIX (Air India Express), stood by quietly, watching with a heavy heart and a solemn promise — to carry forward the legacy and provide the best possible service.
With a final wave of blessing, the Big Brother ascended into the skies — his departure etched forever in the hearts of all who witnessed it," read the post.

Despite AAI ban, biz jets fly out of Begumpet airport

1 2 Hyderabad: Despite a total ban on commercial operations, the Begumpet airport in the heart of Hyderabad seems to be making way for several high-profile Hyderabadis to take off from the facility aboard private choppers. According to documents available with TOI, over half a dozen business jets ferrying three to six passengers each flew in and out of the airport between June 12 and now. Most of the destinations were within the two Telugu states of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh. This information, coming in days after the horrific Air India aircraft (Boeing 787) crash in Ahmedabad, has raised serious safety concerns especially since the Begumpet facility is nestled within a densely populated pocket of Hyderabad. As part of the concession agreement signed between the Union ministry of civil aviation and the Hyderabad International Airport Ltd in 2008, when the GMR airport was developed at Shamshabad, known as the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA), all commercial activity was suspended at the old facility. Incidentally, only weeks ago on June 2, the Airports Authority of India, had issued a circular on implementation of the SOP for handling aircraft operations at Begumpet airport. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Here's What A Walk-In Shower Should Cost Kohler Showers Learn More Undo (A copy is with TOI). Among other guidelines it asked the city facility to ensure only aircraft belonging to defence forces, police, govt dignitaries, and some other non-commercial services are allowed to operate out of its premises. It reiterated the ban on non-scheduled operators (NSOPs) – or commercial aircraft – and allowed authorities a week's time to ensure it was implemented. "Yet, in the last few days there has been hectic activity of such choppers from Begumpet. They have been ferrying prominent industrialists, corporate honchos and Tollywood A-listers, along with family members, for various private events," said a source in the know of things. When TOI verified the call signs (unique identifiers used for radio communication between pilots and air traffic control) of these business jets with the updated list of NSOPs available with the Directorate General of Civil Aviation, it found that all of them featured on it. "This only confirms that commercial activity is being allowed from Begumpet despite AAI orders," said the source alleging that these operators are signing false undertakings, claiming that they are non-commercial flights, to use the city airport, and yet stay under the radar. "The airport and ATC here has just enough capacity and skilled workforce to handle VIP movement. To add to its burden with commercial operations is not only unlawful but also risky. Also, because there have been multiple instances of bird hits around the facility," alleged an aviation expert familiar with the facility. "We have been following all protocols and guidelines. These allegations have no basis. The aircraft that are permitted to operate out of the Begumpet facility are only allowed here," said an official from Begumpet airport, refusing to be quoted.

Turbulence in the skies: Air India diverts two flights due to tech glitches

Problems for Air India don't seem to be ending, as India's oldest airline had to divert two flights on Monday due to technical issues. The incidents occurred just four days after flight AI 171 crashed in Ahmedabad, killing 270 people, including former Chief Minister of Gujarat Vijay Rupani. Two aircraft diverted on June 16 On June 16, Air India flight AI 315 from Hong Kong to Delhi turned back approximately 90 minutes after takeoff. Pilots detected a fault onboard and chose to return to Hong Kong International Airport. The aircraft was a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner — the same model that crashed on June 12. A few hours later, Delhi–Ranchi flight AI 9695 returned to the national capital after experiencing a mid-air technical issue. The aircraft had taken off from Indira Gandhi International Airport at 4:25 pm and was scheduled to land at Birsa Munda Airport at 6:20 pm. According to NDTV, the decision to return was made purely as a safety precaution. Earlier, on June 13, Air India flight AI 379 from Phuket to Delhi carrying 156 passengers was forced to return during its cruise phase due to a bomb threat. The aircraft landed safely, and security checks were conducted before passengers were cleared. These incidents are unfolding under increased technical scrutiny mandated by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA). The regulator has enforced fleet-wide safety checks, particularly on Dreamliners, as a precautionary measure following the Ahmedabad crash. Geopolitical tensions impacting air routes In addition to technical setbacks, flight operations across several carriers — including Air India — have been impacted by the temporary closure of Iranian airspace. The move followed Israeli airstrikes on Iran beginning June 13, 2025. 'Due to the emerging situation in Iran and parts of the Middle East, the subsequent closure of airspace, and in view of the safety of our passengers, some of our flights are operating on alternative extended routes,' Air India stated on X. Long-haul services between India and North America or Europe — such as those bound for New York, London, Toronto, and Frankfurt — were either rerouted via cities like Vienna, Jeddah, Sharjah, or returned mid-air to their origin. Passengers have been advised to regularly monitor flight status amid ongoing disruptions. DGCA mandates Boeing 787 inspections Following the AI 171 crash, the DGCA has ordered a fleet-wide inspection of all Boeing 787-8 and 787-9 aircraft operated by Air India. These checks are being conducted proactively to ensure airworthiness and are not linked to confirmed mechanical failures. On June 15, a Delhi–Zurich flight was delayed to accommodate a mandatory inspection, even though no specific fault was identified. The move reflects heightened regulatory vigilance following the recent tragedy. Monsoon rains add to delays Heavy rainfall and waterlogging in Mumbai have caused additional delays in domestic and international flight operations. Several passengers took to X to report postponements and congestion at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport. 'Heavy rainfall may impact flight operations to and from Mumbai,' Air India posted on X, advising travellers to check their flight status in advance.

France shuts Israeli weapons booths at Paris Air Show; Israel calls move ‘outrageous'

Geopolitical tensions roiled the opening of the Paris Air Show on Monday as French authorities sealed off Israeli weapons industry booths amid the conflicts in Iran and Gaza, a move that Israel condemned as 'outrageous' read more US soldiers soldiers stand by a F-35 A jet fighter on display at the Paris Air Show, in Le Bourget, north of Paris, on Monday. AP Geopolitical tensions roiled the opening of the Paris Air Show on Monday as French authorities sealed off Israeli weapons industry booths amid the conflicts in Iran and Gaza, a move that Israel condemned as 'outrageous'. The decision added drama to the major aerospace industry event, which was already under the shadow of last week's deadly crash of Air India's Boeing 787 Dreamliner. Black walls were installed around the stands of five Israeli defence firms at the trade fair in Le Bourget, an airfield on the outskirts of Paris. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD The booths displayed 'offensive weapons' that could be used in Gaza – in violation of agreements with Israeli authorities, a French government source told AFP. The French government has not given its exact definition of 'offensive' or attack weapons. The companies – Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI), Rafael, Uvision, Elbit and Aeronautics – make drones and guided bombs and missiles. An Israeli exhibitor wrote a message in yellow chalk on one of the walls, saying the hidden defence systems 'are protecting the state of Israel these days. The French government, in the name of discrimination is trying to hide them from you!' French Prime Minister Francois Bayrou defended the decision during a press conference at the air show. 'The French government's position was very simple: no offensive weapons at the arms exposition,' he said. 'Defensive weapons were perfectly acceptable.' Conflicts loom large Bayrou cited the ongoing conflict in Gaza as the rationale behind the ban. 'Given the situation in Gaza… which is extremely serious from a humanitarian and security point of view, France was keen to make it clear that offensive weapons should not be present at this exposition,' Bayrou said. Israeli President Isaac Herzog said he was shocked by the 'outrageous' closure of the pavilions and said the situation should be 'immediately corrected'. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD 'Israeli companies have signed contracts with the organisers… it's like creating an Israeli ghetto,' he said on French television channel LCI. The Israeli defence ministry said in a statement that the 'outrageous and unprecedented decision reeks of policy-driven and commercial considerations'. 'The French are hiding behind supposedly political considerations to exclude Israeli offensive weapons from an international exhibition – weapons that compete with French industries,' it said. 'This is particularly striking given Israeli technologies' impressive and precise performance in Iran.' Israel launched surprise strikes on Iranian military and nuclear sites on Friday, killing top commanders and scientists, prompting Tehran to hit back with a barrage of missiles. The presence of Israeli firms at Le Bourget, though smaller than in the past, was already a source of tension before the start of the Paris Air Show, because of the conflict in Gaza. A French court last week rejected a bid by NGOs to ban Israeli companies from Le Bourget over concerns about 'international crimes'. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Local lawmakers from the Seine-Saint-Denis department hosting the event were absent during Bayrou's visit to the opening of the air show in protest over the Israeli presence. Amir Baram, a general in the Israeli defence ministry, called the French decision 'anti-Semitic', adding that Israel would challenge the move in French courts. French far-right leader Marine Le Pen also criticised the decision, calling it 'unacceptable discrimination, particularly in the current geopolitical context', in a post on X, adding that it 'damages once again our country's international image'. The show's organisers said that dialogue was underway 'to find a positive resolution'. Boeing 'focus on supporting customers' The row over Israel cast a shadow over a trade fair that is usually dominated by displays of the aerospace industry's latest flying wonders, and big orders for plane makers Airbus and Boeing. Airbus announced an order of 30 single-aisle A320neo jets and 10 A350F freighters by Saudi aircraft leasing firm AviLease. The European manufacturer also said that Riyadh Air was buying 25 long-range, wide-body A350-1000 jets. But Boeing chief executive Kelly Ortberg last week cancelled plans to attend the biennial event, to focus on the investigation of the Air India crash. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD 'Our focus is on supporting our customers, rather than announcing orders at this air show,' a Boeing spokeswoman told AFP on Monday. The London-bound Dreamliner crashed shortly after take-off in the western Indian city of Ahmedabad, killing 241 passengers and crew and another 38 people on the ground. One passenger survived.
