Giancarlo Stanton is back in the Yankees' lineup while Aaron Judge's status remains unchanged
Stanton will play right field in one of the two games against the Tampa Bay Rays, but Aaron Judge is not expected to appear in the outfield in either.
There is no set timetable for Judge's return to the field. He was scheduled to test his right elbow with long toss on Tuesday.
'I don't know yet,' Boone said. 'What I've said is I'm waiting on the trainers to say, 'thumbs up.' He's expected to long toss again today, so I don't expect it here in Tampa. Could it be Boston? Maybe. I just don't know yet.'
Boone added that Judge may not regain full throwing strength this season.
'I don't think we're going to see him throwing like he normally does at any point this year, but that's OK,' Boone said. 'We've got to feel like he can go out there and protect himself.'
The Yankees are coming off a three-game sweep of the St. Louis Cardinals and hold a three-game lead for the final American League wild-card spot. Offensively, they will be satisfied if Judge can simply remain productive at the plate. Since being activated from the injured list on Aug. 5, Judge has been limited to designated hitter duties. He entered the week batting .333 with 39 home runs, 91 RBIs and a 1.134 OPS, all among the league leaders. His home run Sunday was his first extra-base hit since returning.
Judge's inability to play the field has reduced the team's flexibility. Stanton is batting .299 with 12 home runs, 34 RBIs and a .953 OPS this season, but his long injury history makes any outfield assignment a risk. He did not debut until mid-June because of tendinitis in both elbows. After playing three straight games in the outfield last week, he missed three consecutive games with soreness. He has declined to specify where the discomfort occurred.

Iowa's Mark Gronowski ready for season, eager for contact as Hawkeyes hope for improved QB play
IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Quarterbacks aren't supposed to get hit in practice, but Mark Gronowski wouldn't mind getting tackled a few times before the season. 'I'm a guy that loves contact,' Iowa's first-year quarterback said. 'I love getting hit to start off games. Just get the feel of it, especially to start the season off. I haven't been hit all offseason, all fall camp, as we try to protect the quarterbacks, but I'll put my body on the line when we need to.' It's probably not wise, though, for Gronowski to take too many shots. The South Dakota State transfer is the central figure in an offense that is starved for better quarterback production. 'To me, ever since Spencer got hurt in November of '22, it's been a bumpy road,' Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz said, referring to Spencer Petras. 'Nobody's fault, it's just the way it's been.' The Hawkeyes used three quarterbacks as injuries mounted last season, and they ranked 129th in passing. It's why Iowa went out and got Gronowski. 'I mean, personally, I love the pressure, because, really, you've got to look at it as more of an opportunity,' Gronowski said. 'Everyone in the community, everyone on this team, has really been looking for that QB success, has been looking for that offensive success. And we got a lot of great guys and a lot of great weapons that we have the opportunity to do that.' Gronowski threw for 10,308 yards and won 49 games in his four seasons at South Dakota State. He led the Jackrabbits to Football Championship Subdivision championships in 2022 and 2023 and won the Walter Payton Award in 2023 as the top FCS offensive player. Offensive coordinator Tim Lester calls Gronowski a 'steady Eddie.' 'It's very evident why he's won as much as he's won as you watch him go through the good and the bad, and how it never affects his mindset,' Lester said. Gronowski entered the transfer portal rather than enter the NFL draft because of a shoulder injury requiring offseason surgery. He missed spring practice to recover. 'I feel so fresh,' he said. 'The arm feels fresh. It's as good as I felt so far.' Running men Replacing running back Kaleb Johnson might be a three-man job. Johnson, a third-round draft pick of the Pittsburgh Steelers, ran for 1,537 yards last season and a program-record 21 rushing touchdowns. The top returning rushers are Kamari Moulton (473 yards) and Jaziun Patterson (309), and Terrell Washington Jr. also is in the mix. 'We can use the talents of each of them,' Lester said. 'Some of them are great route runners, some of them have unbelievable hands, some are big and can bull over people.' Middle of the defense The departures of Jay Higgins and Nick Jackson, who combined for 215 tackles, leave a hole at linebacker. Karson Sharar, Jaxon Rexroth and Jaden Harrell are first in line for the three spots. Defensive coordinator Phil Parker said he likes the depth, with Jayden Montgomery, Cam Buffington and Preston Ries also competing for playing time. Chasing history Ferentz is two wins from passing Ohio State's Woody Hayes as the Big Ten's winningest coach. Ferentz has 204 wins at Iowa heading into his 27th year. He noted that Iowa lost 18 of its first 20 games over his first two seasons. 'Yeah,' he said, 'the odds were probably against 20-plus years at that point.' Huskers about to take off if Matt Rhule's third season goes according to form of his previous stops
LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — It's Year 3 of the Matt Rhule era at Nebraska, the one the program has been pointing to since his hiring. The third season is where Rhule's previous college teams have made their biggest jumps, and the stage is set for the same to happen for the Cornhuskers. Dylan Raiola will be in his second year as the starting quarterback and his first full season with offensive coordinator Dana Holgorsen. Veteran defensive coordinator John Butler enters his first full season running a unit ranked in the top 20 last year. The schedule is favorable. 'I believe we can do something special this year,' Raiola said. 'We'll find out pretty soon.' Rhule in 2023 took over a proud program a quarter-century removed from its heyday under Tom Osborne. The Huskers had won no more than five games in six straight seasons before Rhule arrived. His first team went 5-7 with five one-score losses. His second team ended a seven-year bowl drought and finished 7-6 with five more losses by eight points or less. At Temple, Rhule was 2-10 and 6-6 before going 10-4 in 2015 for the first of two straight double-digit win seasons. At Baylor, he was 1-11 and 7-6 before going 11-3 in 2019 with a Sugar Bowl appearance. 'You just look at what he's done in the past,' Raiola said, 'and all you can do is trust his process and see it works.' The Australian freshman alternates between kicking right- and left-footed. A natural left-footed kicker, he grew up playing Australian rules football and went through the Prokick Australia program. Wilson said he had always tinkered with right-footed kicking but didn't get serious about it until three years ago when he had a minor injury to his left foot. A Prokick coach asked him to kick a couple balls with his right, and he nailed both. Switch punting can provide an edge because the ball spins differently depending on which foot it comes off, making it more difficult to field. Love of the game Linebacker Javin Wright is a rare seventh-year player who is expected to be a major contributor. After enduring a run of health issues, he's all in for this season. He was able to trade in his No. 33 jersey for No. 0. Single-digit jerseys are awarded by vote of the team to players who show the most toughness and leadership. 'Javin's playing on borrowed time,' Rhule said. 'He had it taken from him. He's playing for the joy and passion of playing, so that's infectious to those guys.'
