Indian boxers' training trip to the UK for the World Championships faces visa issues. Only four women boxers and a few coaches have reached as the rest await clearances in Patiala.
The Indian boxers' planned training trip to the UK ahead of the crucial World Championships has faced obstacles due to visa-related complications.
The squad was scheduled to travel on Sunday to participate in a multinational training camp in Sheffield, an essential preparation for the World Championships in Liverpool from September 4 to 14.
However, only four women boxers and a few coaching staff members have managed to secure visas and reach the UK.
The 10-member men's team and six women boxers are still awaiting their clearances and remain at the national camp in NIS Patiala.
Currently, the male boxers have only one coach available, as three others, including head coach Dharmendra Yadav, are already in Sheffield.
'Yes, the three of us have reached here but all the (male) boxers are still waiting for their visas," Yadav told PTI.
'We had to start sparring in the multinational camp from Wednesday but we cancelled it as we don't know when the visa will arrive and when the boxers will be able to reach here."
The Interim Committee, which is managing the day-to-day affairs of the Boxing Federation of India, said it's in 'constant touch" with Indian Embassy in the UK, Sports Ministry and the Sports Authority of India 'to help expedite the visa process".
'However, as the process is largely automated, interventions so far have not been able to resolve the delays," committee member Col Arun Malik said.
'That said, we have received 3 more visas, and 12 members of our 31-member contingent, including 4 women boxers, have already reached England.
'On our part, all logistical arrangements are ready, and the moment we have clarity, we will ensure that the remaining players travel to England without delay. We remain hopeful that the pending cases will be resolved soon, enabling the entire team to join the camp at the earliest," he added.
Which Boxers Have Managed To Reach UK?
Those who have reached Sheffield include two-time world champion Nikhat Zareen, Minakshi, Pooja Rani, and Nupur Sheoran.
Meanwhile, Olympic medallist Lovlina Borgohain, Commonwealth Games bronze-winner Jaismine Lamboria, and Asian Games medallist Narender Berwal, among others, are still in Patiala.
'Four (female) boxers have reached and 2 coaches are there in the UK. I have received my visa but I stayed back for the BFI elections," said women's head coach D Chandralal, who is a representative of the Kerala boxing state unit for the August 21 BFI elections.
'But I have given the plan to the coaches there and they will conduct training according to that. They have some sparring sessions scheduled. In the meantime after the elections I'll stay with the rest of the boxers," he added.
Sheffield, home to the Great Britain Boxing headquarters, is one of the sport's most prominent training hubs.
The multinational camp, running from August 17 to September 1, features teams from Ireland, France, Germany, Uzbekistan, the USA, and Poland, among others.
This edition of the World Championships will be the first to be held under the aegis of the new governing body, World Boxing.
It will feature competitions across 10 weight classes for both men and women, and, for the first time, male and female boxers will compete in Olympic-style events at the same championship.

Krishnamachari Srikkanth on India's 2025 Asia Cup squad: ‘There is no chance of winning the T20 World Cup with this bunch…'

India will look to defend their T20 World Cup crown next February. The showpiece event is co-hosted in both India and Sri Lanka, and before that, the side has an opportunity to test their strengths in weaknesses in the upcoming Asia Cup in the UAE. Former Indian chief selector Krishnamachari Srikkanth opined that while this set of players might end up winning the Asia Cup, they might not win the T20 World Cup coming up. 'We might win the Asia Cup with this team, but there is no chance of winning the T20 World Cup with this bunch. Are you going to take this team to the World Cup? Is this the preparation for the T20 World Cup, which is hardly six months away?' Srikkanth said on his YouTube channel. Srikkanth also questioned the Indian batting order. 'Who will bat at No. 5? Five has to be either Sanju Samson, Jitesh Sharma or Shivam Dube or Rinku Singh. Hardik Pandya usually bats at No. 5, so now, Patel Axar cannot bat at six. I can't understand how they picked Dube. Yashasvi Jaiswal have performed in international cricket and IPL as well. What does he do?' Gill returned to the shortest format for the national team since June 2024. The India Test captain recently guided the team in against England in the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy where they tied the series 2-2. Shreyas Iyer and Yashasvi Jaiswal, however, missed out while Kuldeep Yadav came back into the team after missing the England T20I series at the beginning of the year. Big-hitter Rinku Singh as well as pace star Jasprit Bumrah was also included. However, chief selector Ajit Agarkar said that this won't be the final selection for the T20 World Cup 2026. 'We have had a nice break…We are trying to look after him: Agarkar said on Bumrah's workload management. Talking about Jaiswal, who was a standby, Agarkar said, 'he will have to wait.' 'We have lovely players around with amazing skills which makes my job easier,' Surya said. Full squad: Surya Kumar Yadav (C), Shubman Gill (VC), Abhishek Sharma, Tilak Varma, Hardik Pandya, Shivam Dube, Axar Patel, Jitesh Sharma (WK), Jasprit Bumrah, Arshdeep Singh, Varun Chakaravarthy, Kuldeep Yadav, Sanju Samson (WK), Harshit Rana, Rinku Singh Standbys: Prasidh Krishna, Washington Sundar, Riyan Parag, Dhruv Jurel and Yashasvi Jaiswal.

ICC Breaks Silence After Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma's Names Go Missing From ODI Rankings

The ICC rankings published on Wednesday created a flutter around the cricket world as the ODI list did not have the names of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma. Both the Indian cricket superstars have retired from Tests and T20Is. ODI is the only format that they are still active. In the midst of this, Kohli and Rohit's missing names started a speculation on social media that they might be on their way out from the ODI format too. However ICC has now clarified that it was a technical glitch that saw Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma's named missing from the ICC list. "A number of issues in this week's rankings are currently being investigated," the ICC told Wisden. Later, both the names were added. Rohit is currently ranked No. 2 while Kohli is no. 4. Meanwhile, India wrist spinner Kuldeep Yadav has slipped to third place in the latest ICC ODI rankings for bowlers released on Wednesday with South African tweaker Kehsav Maharaj reclaiming the top position. Maharaj regained the top position after helping his team beat Australia by 98 runs in the first ODI of their three-match series in Cairns. The 35-year-old left-arm spinner, who was named Player of the Match after grabbing five for 33, overtook Kuldeep and Sri Lanka's Maheesh Theekshana to the top spot, which he had earlier held briefly in November and December 2023. Apart from Kuldeep, Ravindra Jadeja is the only Indian bowler who is in the top 10 in the updated list. The Indian team has not played an ODI match since their title triumph in the Champions Trophy. West Indies fast bowler Jayden Seales was another one to make huge inroads in the bowling rankings after his superb haul of six for 18 in the final game of their three-match series against Pakistan, moving up 15 spots to 18th position. Pakistan leg-spinner Abrar Ahmed (up 15 places to joint-39th) and West Indies off-spinner Roston Chase (up five places to 58th) are others to move up the list.

Pole vault legend Duplantis named ‘Star Athlete' for World Athletics Ultimate Championship

Pole vault sensation Armand 'Mondo' Duplantis said he was excited to be part of the growth of athletics after the two-time Olympic champion was handed an ambassadorial role for next year's inaugural World Athletics Ultimate Championship. World Athletics announced last year it would hold the global championship as a grand conclusion to the 2026 season. It will then take place every two years. In a statement, World Athletics said Duplantis had been named 'Star Athlete' for the event. The governing body added that the pole vaulter would be among the 'key collaborators pursuing their cultural passions outside of athletics in music, fashion, art, and on-screen, who will promote the new global season-ending championship.' The event will take place in Budapest with a record $10 million in prize money on offer. Gold medallists will each receive $150,000 as part of what the sport's world governing body has described as the richest prize pot ever in the sport. Duplantis won his second world title in 2023 in Budapest. He also broke his own pole vault world record there for a 13th time on Tuesday, soaring 6.29 metres at the Hungarian Grand Prix. 'We're always looking for new ways to make sure that the spotlight shines on athletics and the Ultimate will light up Budapest,' the 25-year-old added. 'I have great memories of winning world gold two years ago and remember the incredible atmosphere inside the stadium that night. It would be a dream to break the world record in front of a packed crowd next year. 'This event is set to showcase our sport like never before and I can't wait to be a part of it.' The championship is scheduled to take place over three evenings next year from September 11 to September 13. Each session will last for less than three hours, in a bid to capture the attention of global television viewers. The programme will feature 26 individual events – 16 track and 10 field – and two relays, including the new mixed 4x100m.
