Anbumani says he will steer PMK, calls his father ‘family deity'

The Hindu31-05-2025
For the second day in a row, PMK president Anbumani Ramadoss on Saturday addressed office-bearers of PMK and reiterated that his father and party founder S. Ramadoss continues to be the party's 'family deity', acknowledged his vision and hardwork in building the party, but made it clear that he will be the president and that the party would be steered by him in the future.
Speaking to the office-bearers from PMK strongholds such as Dharmapuri, Salem, Erode, Namakkal and Kallakurichi districts, Dr. Anbumani urged them to undertake a membership drive in the next three weeks and said that that he would soon take out a yatra across Tamil Nadu to 'reclaim rights of the Tamil people'.
'After the membership drive, we also have plans regarding caste census. I will also undertake a yatra by foot for which I will announce the details soon. There is a lot of work to be done. You are the party; the PMK is not owned by a single person,' he told them. 'You are the reason why the Vanniyar youth conference was a big success. We are all in the same team. I will never think that you are my subordinates. You are all my colleagues,' he added.
Dr. Anbumani said he would soon resolve the issues within the party and reassured office-bearers that 'nobody can remove or change anyone' in the party without his concurrence and signature. 'I have been appointed by the party general council as per laws and it has been acknowledged by the Election Commission. Only the party president should make appointments and sign on appointments. I understand how sad you are all, but you also know how bad I feel about what is happening within the party. Our strength is our youth... and many of you are here to do good for the community. PMK should rule the State,' he said.
PMK general secretary Vadivel Ravanan, treasurer Thilagabama, Vanniyar Sangam State secretary Karthik, and MLAs S.P. Venkateswaran, S. Sadashivam and C. Sivakumar were also present.
On the other hand, Pennagaram MLA and former president G.K. Mani said every cadre of the PMK wished that Dr. Anbumani and Dr. Ramadoss met to resolve the issues. 'If they meet and talk, it would give a lot of energy to the cadre. I had urged Dr. Ramadoss not to change the office-bearers, but he decided to anyway. We are talking continuously with both leaders to resolve this issue.'
Mr. Mani added, 'Some say I am the reason for the split...or that someone else or some other political party is the reason...these things cannot be accepted. Dr. Ramadoss has been politics for 45 years. Dr. Anbumani has been a union minister and achieved a lot. Do they have to be told what to do? Nobody else is responsible. This is happening due to unforeseen circumstances.'
Mr. Mani said Dr. Ramadoss was in 'great mental stress'. 'I have told Dr. Ramadoss several times. I have taken two decisions — to leave everything and go somewhere or I shouldn't be alive. I am saying this because I am so distressed at what is happening in the party,' he said.

Matters pending before judiciary can't be discussed in Parliament: Rijiju on SIR debate

NEW DELHI: Matters pending before the judiciary cannot be discussed on the floor of the House, the govt asserted on Wednesday in Lok Sabha in response to continued demand from opposition parties for a discussion on the SIR exercise in Bihar. Addressing the House, parliamentary affairs minister Kiren Rijuju said the functioning of autonomous institutions, such as the Election Commission, cannot be discussed in Parliament. Rijiju cited a 1988 ruling by then LS speaker Bal Ram Jhakar that under the existing constitutional provisions, the House cannot comment upon the actions of EC. "On the issue of special intensive revision of electoral rolls in Bihar for which they (opposition members) are disturbing the House from first day of the session, we all know that the matter is under consideration of SC and as such it is sub judice, and hence, a discussion cannot be held on the subject," he said.

EC to opposition: Get 'wrongfully excluded' to file claims

NEW DELHI: Brushing aside the allegation by opposition MPs Asaduddin Owaisi and Randeep Surjewala that the special intensive revision of electoral roll in Bihar is an exercise in disenfranchising minorities and precarious communities, the Election Commission on Wednesday asked them to get all such electors to file their claims and objections before Sept 1. "Mr Owaisi and Mr Surjewala should ensure that their state units and booth level agents (BLAs) facilitate those they complain have been wrongfully excluded to file their claims with the ERO to add them back in the electoral roll. Interestingly, even as the national party leaders have been complaining of alleged irregularities and imperfections in the roll, not a single claim or objection was filed by any of the 1.6 lakh party BLAs in the field, between publication of the roll on Aug 1 and 9 am on Wednesday," said an EC official. On the other hand, 3,659 individual electors directly filed their claims and objections during this period. Another 19,186 newly-eligible electors have also filed pleas for fresh enrolment through Form 6, along with the mandatory declaration. EC on Wednesday said it is revising the Bihar roll as per the Constitution and the extant laws, and with full transparency. "Citizens are also aware that revision of electoral roll is mandatory before every election as per Section 21(2)(a) of the Representation of the People Act, 1950, and Rule 25 of the Registration of Electors Rules 1960," said the poll panel. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Overpaying for Car Insurance? EC said lists of electors reported by BLOs as dead, permanently shifted, having two votes and who could not be contacted after at least three visits of BLOs were shared with all political parties and their BLAs on or before July 20, giving them ample time to report any wrongful additions or deletions.

Opposition pulls out former Rajya Sabha Chairman Dhankhar's remarks to counter government over SIR debate

Countering the government's arguments against holding a debate on the ongoing special intensive revision of Bihar electoral rolls, the Opposition on Wednesday (August 6, 2025) cited former Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar's remarks in the Upper House that the Parliament is entitled to discuss everything. It also referred to previous instances when debates were held on electoral reforms and functioning of the Election Commission. The government has cited a ruling by former Lok Sabha Speaker Balram Jakhar that the functioning of an autonomous body such as the Election Commission cannot be deliberated in the House. Parliament Monsoon Session Day 12 highlights Congress president and Leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge wrote a letter to Deputy Chairman Harivansh where he quoted Mr. Dhankhar's remarks of July 21, 2023. The former Chairman had said that the Parliament is 'entitled to discuss everything under the planet with one restriction…' This restriction relates to the conduct of any judge of the Supreme Court or of a High Court in the discharge of his ties '... except upon a motion for presenting an address to the President praying for the removal of the judge...' Mr. Kharge claimed that the former Chairman had ruled that 'the concept of sub judice is totally misconceived'. 'You will undoubtedly appreciate that the Chair is a continuing entity. You yourself have quoted rulings given by the Chair over the past many years in support of some of your decisions. It is clear from this ruling of the Chair that the Rajya Sabha is entitled to discuss the issue of revision of electoral rolls, which is of fundamental importance in our democracy,' Mr. Kharge said in his letter. The debate on the issue becomes urgent, because it is the first time such an exercise is being undertaken by the Election Commission and it is expected to be extended to West Bengal, Assam, and other States. The Opposition MPs have been repeatedly asking for an urgent discussion in the House from the first day of the current session, he said. 'I, therefore, on my own behalf and behalf of the Opposition parties in Rajya Sabha, am writing to request you to immediately allow a discussion on this issue that is of paramount concern to crores of voters, especially those belonging to the weaker sections of the society,' Mr. Kharge said. The Chair in the Rajya Sabha is a continuing entity in spite of the comings to and the goings from it - both scheduled and unscheduled. Yesterday, the Deputy Chairman gave a ruling that because the Lok Sabha Speaker had said so on Dec 14, 1988, any matter concerning the Election… — Jairam Ramesh (@Jairam_Ramesh) August 6, 2025 Press conference The Opposition INDIA bloc parties also addressed a press conference at Vijay Chowk reiterating their demand for a debate on SIR exercise. The Aam Aadmi Party, which recently declared that it was no longer part of the bloc, was also part of the press conference. At the press conference, Mr. Kharge claimed that minorities, Dalits, and adivasis were facing the risk of losing their voting rights. 'INDIA bloc parties want discussion in Parliament on special intensive revision of (SIR) electoral rolls in Bihar but the government is unwilling,' the Congress president said. 'We have been urging the Speaker, Chairman, and the government again and again that the voting rights of people should not be stolen.... That is what is happening in the SIR exercise,' he said. Trinamool Congress leader Sagarika Ghose said they will continue protests inside and outside Parliament over the SIR issue. DMK leader Tiruchi Siva said they will take the message to the people on what is happening in Parliament. 'Having full trust in this temple of democracy, we are insisting on a debate on SIR. On that basis, the EC, by way of revising electoral rolls, is disqualifying many from having voting rights,' he said. John Brittas of the CPI(M) said, 'Voters list is the cornerstone of a democracy, if it is manipulated, the very essence of democracy will be corrupted. Anything that concerns the democracy of a country needs to be debated in Parliament.' AAP leader Sandeep Pathak noted that half of the Monsoon Session had been washed out and the blame lay at the government's door as it has been shying away from such an important debate. He said it was impossible to procure the documents needed for the SIR in the timeline set by the poll officials. Previous instances Earlier, Gaurav Gogoi, the Deputy Leader of the Congress in the Lok Sabha, in a post on X, listed out previous instances when electoral reforms and functioning of the Election Commission were debated in Parliament — in 1961, the Rajya Sabha held a debate on amendments to the Conduct of Elections Rules; in 1991, the Upper House debated the urgent need to amend the existing election laws; in 2015 a Calling Attention Motion was moved by Rajya Sabha LoP Ghulam Nabi Azad on proxy and e-postal voting for NRIs; and in 2019, a short-duration discussion was held on electoral reforms. 'There is ample precedent. The government must not delay the long overdue and essential discussion on electoral reforms,' Mr. Gogoi said. The Opposition has said that the government should allow for a debate on electoral reforms in Parliament.
