MA target better gold medal haul in Thailand
MA president Datuk Seri Shahidan Kassim said the association already have a specific target, which will be announced by Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh ahead of the biennial Games.
'The minister will speak on behalf of all Malaysian sports, including MA... we've already discussed the target during our meetings.
'Of course, on our part we want to do better than in 2023 — if we win less, that would be unacceptable,' he told a press conference at Wisma OCM here today.
For the record, the national athletics squad brought home five gold, three silver and 11 bronze medals at the 2023 SEA Games in Cambodia.
The five gold medals were contributed by Muhammad Irfan Shamsuddin in the men's discus throw, Andre Anura Anuar (men's triple jump), Umar Osman (men's 400 metres), Grace Wong (women's hammer throw), and Shereen Samson Vallabouy in the women's 400m.
Meanwhile, Shahidan also announced the list of athletes currently qualified under Category A, including sprint ace Muhammad Azeem Fahmi, Umar Osman, Andre Anura, Muhammad Irfan, Jonah Chang Rigan (shot put), and Wan Muhammad Fazri Wan Zahari (800m) for the men's team.
He said the four female athletes are Shereen, Grace, Queenie Ting Kung Ni (discus throw), and Nani Shahirah Maryata (shot put), while both the men's and women's 4x100m relay teams are being considered as potential Category A qualifiers.
'Category A means the athlete is among the top three in the ASEAN region. Athletes in Category A will be fully funded by the National Sports Council (NSC),' he said, adding that 20 athletes currently fall under Category B.
The 2025 SEA Games are scheduled to be held from December 9 to 20.
In addition, Shahidan stated that the NSC have agreed to appoint six new athletics coaches, namely Andrew Lulham, Jorge Luis Alfaro Quinones, Yunaika Crawford Rojer, Muhammad Hakimi Ismail, Mohd Robani Hassan and Lo Choon Sieng.

Marchand smashes 200 individual medley world record at world championships
OLYMPIC CHAMPION Leon Marchand said his decision to opt for a reduced schedule at the world championships in Singapore had paid off handsomely after the Frenchman smashed the 200 metres individual medley world record on Wednesday. Marchand won four individual gold medals at the Paris Olympics in 2024 but his efforts at his home Games left him exhausted and needing time to rest. He returned to action in Florida in May and arrived in Singapore with only the 200 and 400 medleys on his programme for individual events. The 23-year-old has slipped back into competition mode with ease and produced a stunning 1:52.69 in his 200 medley semi-final to shave nearly one-and-a-half seconds off Ryan Lochte's mark (1:54.00) set at the world championships in Shanghai in 2011. The Toulouse native shook his fist and punched the water in celebration, and later said the decision to come in with a lighter workload had been vindicated. 'It was probably the right decision,' Marchand said. 'I'm grateful for my coaches, all the staff behind me. It's been a pretty hard season for me, but I'm so happy to be here.' Marchand, who also holds the 400 IM world record, said he needed a moment to process his achievement on Wednesday before finally finding the words to describe his feelings. 'It's just an explosion of joy,' he added. 'I feel all the choices I made this year were the right ones and I want to thank everyone who's been supporting me. PETALING JAYA: Badminton legend Datuk Seri Lee Chong Wei has called for patience and support for national singles coaching director Kenneth Jonassen as he works to develop world-class singles players. Jonassen, who took up the role about eight months ago, came in with a strong reputation, having previously coached Olympic champion Viktor Axelsen and world No. 3 Anders Antonsen. Upon his appointment, he was entrusted with a major task, to groom a player capable of delivering Malaysia's first Olympic gold at the 2028 Los Angeles Games. However, he is already facing pressure as the current batch of men's and women's singles players in the national set-up have yet to deliver convincing results. Leong Jun Hao, for instance, has climbed slightly to No. 24 in the world rankings this week and has managed to upset a few top players, but his performances remain inconsistent and he has yet to achieve a breakthrough this year. The situation is similar in the women's singles camp, which is currently led by national No. 1 K. Letshanaa. Chong Wei, however, has stepped up in defence of the Danish coach, saying Jonassen has a clear vision and good ideas for improving the singles department but the process will take time. Ideally, Chong Wei believes Jonassen should be given a full Olympic cycle to implement his training programme and show whether it can produce the desired results. 'I've met him and we discussed how we can help our top singles players. He has some very good ideas. 'But we need to give him time — not a month, not even a year. He should be given at least one full cycle. 'That means four years. Only then can he implement his plans and hopefully deliver the results we want. He's only been here for less than six months. 'It's like raising a child — even learning to walk takes a year. Producing a world champion takes far longer,' said Chong Wei. Chong Wei shared his thoughts when met by reporters after being conferred the Darjah Gemilang Pangkuan Negeri (DGPN), which carries the title Datuk Seri, during the 2025 Penang State Awards ceremony held in conjunction with the 84th birthday celebration of Yang di-Pertua Negeri Tun Ramli Ngah Talib yesterday.
