Chinese techies' exit likely to hamper India's smartphone export success
Yash Kumar Singhal New Delhi
Listen to This Article
Recent reports of Chinese engineers and technicians being asked to leave the manufacturing facilities of Apple's iPhone in India have raised fears about its effect on production and export capacity of made-in-India smartphones. This comes after Beijing verbally asked regulatory authorities and local governments to curb technology transfers and movement of technicians to other countries in a bid to prevent the companies from shifting their manufacturing base elsewhere. Earlier, India's commanding success at smartphone exports reached new heights in FY25, with exports worth $24.13 billion in FY25 – 55 per cent more than what it exported in FY24.

China's Xinjiang-Tibet railway line all set to Chug Along
Synopsis China is preparing to build the Xinjiang-Tibet railway near Ladakh. This project will run close to the Line of Actual Control. The railway company will handle construction and tourism. This plan has been in development for many years. It is one of China's major projects. India and China are currently in talks to ease border tensions. China's Xinjiang-Tibet railway line all set to Chug Along (representative image) After decades of feasibility work, China is set to start construction on the strategic Xinjiang-Tibet railway line - along India's northern borders in Ladakh - with the establishment of a dedicated entity for the purpose, Xinjiang Tibet Railway Co. Ltd, over the past week. The planned link is likely to cross the Aksai Chin and run close to the G219 highway, not far from the Line of Actual Control. Border infrastructure has been a point of serious concern, leading to standoff and skirmishes. This comes at a time when India and China are in talks to de-escalate tensions along LAC. More talks are slated in the runup to the SCO summit later this month. The new company's mandates are construction, manufacturing of railway transportation equipment, real estate development and operations, besides developing tourist facilities. Just like the mega dam on the upper reaches of Brahmaputra (Yarlung Tsangpo), for which a state-owned enterprise China Yajiang Group was floated and where construction started last month, the Xinjiang Tibet Railway Co Ltd will be wholly owned by China State Railway Group Ltd. The company has been set up with registered capital of 95 billion yuan (nearly $13.2b) and one Ma Yinjun as its legal representative, in filings reported from China's National Enterprise Credit Information Publicity system. Plan in the works The railway plan has been in the works for nearly two decades. It was first mentioned in 2006-08 around the time the first rail line to Lhasa was operationalised. The link was to be part of a network connecting Lhasa to the Chinese mainland, Yunnan and Chengdu to the East and Xinjiang in the West. But the Xinjiang link has been on paper for a while largely due to the extensive feasibility studies needed for the project, which will traverse through very harsh terrain, sub-zero and permafrost conditions. In 2018, a section of the Xinjiang-Tibet Railway was included in the 2021-30 Railway Network Development Plan for Tibet Autonomous Region.'One of 45 major projects'In May 2022, a tender was awarded for the Hotan-Shigatse railway survey and design project by China State Railway Group. In April 2025, the Chinese transport ministry in a press conference identified the Xinjiang-Tibet railway line as one of the 45 major projects, where construction was to be started within the year. Apple $100 Billion US Investment Boost: Apple quarterly results, stock market reaction, share performance and challenges ahead
Apple $100 Billion US Investment Boost is available with Apple quarterly results, stock market reaction, share performance and challenges ahead. Apple has announced a $100 billion increase in its US investment plans, bringing its total commitment to $600 billion over four years. The announcement came after CEO Tim Cook's visit to the White House, where new tariffs on semiconductor imports were revealed. The move could shield Apple from these tariffs and strengthen its domestic manufacturing footprint. The expanded plan will create 20,000 new jobs directly and support hundreds of thousands indirectly across its supply chain. Companies committing to domestic production, such as Apple, will be exempt. The move follows earlier tariff increases on Indian imports, affecting Apple's overseas production hubs. Live Events Apple has long relied on manufacturing in China, India and Vietnam. The new plan will keep high-value manufacturing in the US, while final assembly will remain overseas for now. This arrangement appears acceptable to the administration. Apple's Stock Market Reaction and Share Performance Apple's stock rose 12% last week, marking its best week since 2020. The announcement of the investment and improved quarterly results boosted investor sentiment. However, the stock is still down about 6% year-to-date. Despite recent gains, Apple lags rivals in AI adoption, which remains a concern for investors. Analysts say the investment move could improve Apple's political standing and stabilize its supply chain. Apple Quarterly Results Boost Confidence In the June quarter, Apple posted $94 billion in revenue, up 10% year-on-year. iPhone sales grew 13%, driven by demand ahead of potential price hikes. The launch of the affordable iPhone 16e also supported sales. Services revenue reached $27.4 billion, up 13% from last year. This segment now delivers margins above 70%, compared to 30–40% for hardware. Growth in services has slowed since the pandemic, and regulatory challenges could impact revenue in the future. Also Read: Vladimir Putin's Propaganda: This 'Nazi State' may witness possible Russian military invasion soon Apple Challenges Ahead High labor costs, a shortage of skilled manufacturing workers, and reliance on overseas suppliers pose challenges to large-scale US assembly. Apple's plan focuses on critical component manufacturing in the US while maintaining overseas final assembly to balance costs. Regulatory risks include possible changes to Apple's search contract with Google and rules requiring alternative payment systems in the App Store. Apple's AI strategy remains less defined compared to rivals like Microsoft and Meta. Apple Outlook Apple's increased U.S. investment may shield it from tariffs, strengthen supplier networks, and support political relations. Whether these moves will sustain share price growth will depend on its ability to navigate regulatory challenges and advance in AI technologies. FAQs Why did Apple increase its US investment by $100 billion? Apple aims to expand domestic manufacturing, avoid new semiconductor tariffs , strengthen supply chains, and create jobs while improving its political standing with the US administration. How will Apple's American Manufacturing Program work? The program will focus on U.S.-based chip production, supplier partnerships, and creating advanced manufacturing capacity across 24 factories in 12 states, producing over 19 billion chips in 2025.
