Google, TVA and Kairos Power launch advanced nuclear partnership

Google, Kairos Power and the Tennessee Valley Authority announced a landmark agreement Monday to deploy one of the first advanced nuclear power purchase agreements, aiming to meet surging electricity demands from artificial intelligence data centers. Under the deal, TVA will purchase up to 50 megawatts of electricity from Kairos Power's planned Hermes 2 reactor in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. The reactor will supply electricity to Google's data centers in Tennessee and Alabama, marking the first time a U.S. utility has signed a PPA for electricity from a Generation IV advanced reactor. 'This is a huge step towards future deployments. It demonstrates how a public power provider can team up with a tech developer and with a tech company,' said Scott Hunnewell, vice president of TVA's New Nuclear Program, in an interview. 'It really lays the architecture down to expand nuclear, to quickly develop the Kairos plants and for other people to follow our lead.' Advertisement 'Advanced reactor' is an umbrella term that typically refers to small modular reactors or Gen IV reactors, the latter of which use a substance other than water as a coolant. Hermes 2 would be both an SMR and a Gen IV.

India's SECI cancels two offshore wind tenders worth 4.5GW

The Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI) has cancelled two significant offshore wind energy tenders due to a lack of interest from developers. The tenders, including a 500MW project under the viability gap funding scheme and a 4,000MW sea-bed lease rights allocation, were both aimed at boosting India's offshore wind capacity. SECI had sought bids for a 500MW inter-state transmission system-connected offshore wind project in Gujarat, to be developed on a build-own-operate basis. The successful bidder would have signed a 25-year power purchase agreement (PPA) with the SECI and conducted necessary seabed surveys and development activities to achieve financial closure. Despite the initial anticipation, the response from developers was underwhelming, leading to the tenders' cancellation. Citing an individual close to the situation, the Economic Times mentioned that SECI might consider issuing a revised tender, but has not yet decided. The individual said: "There may be some changes. The idea is not off. "It (the project) has not been able to generate that sort of interest from developers. This is the first time there is an attempt to establish... and it is a complex technology while being capital intensive.' The tender for the 500MW offshore wind energy project was initially released in September 2024, with the final date for offline bid submissions set for 4 August 2025. The SECI serves as an implementing agency for the development of solar, wind and hybrid projects as part of fulfilling India's nationally determined contributions (NDCs). To achieve this, SECI releases tenders for the selection of renewable energy developers for the establishment of projects on a Pan-India or state-specific basis. The selection process for successful bidders is carried out via a tariff-based competitive e-bidding procedure. "India's SECI cancels two offshore wind tenders worth 4.5GW" was originally created and published by Energy Monitor, a GlobalData owned brand.
