
Dreaming of Dead People by Rosalind Belben review – rivals anything by Virginia Woolf
Dreaming of Dead People might best be described as an early example of autofiction: its narrator, Lavinia, is the same age as Belben was at the time of writing, and she recalls a similar childhood in Dorset, including a father who was a Royal Navy commander and who was killed when she was three. Belben has described the book as 'a study of the human figure', and given its parallels with her own life story and its raw and deeply personal style any reader could be forgiven for assuming that the figure is her own.
The book is divided into six very different sections, including a stay in Venice, a treatise on masturbation, a description of a beloved dog's euthanasia and a vivid erotic daydream involving Robin Hood. It is hard, at first, to understand how these parts relate to one another, for this uncompromising book offers few obvious clues, but on second reading they shift and merge, and the payoff for this extra mental and imaginative effort is a truthful and vivid portrait of a highly particularised human consciousness.
In the first section, At Torcello, Lavinia recalls a trip to the Venetian island in winter. She is there to see a Byzantine mosaic of the Virgin Mary and baby Jesus, an image of motherhood that will echo through the book. While she is on the island she meets an English family for whom she will later babysit during a power cut, her relationship to children and the idea of family coming slowly into focus.
Torcello and Venice itself are made strange by the things she notices, and by her attitude to them, both at the time and in recollection: a pregnant dog, a miserable rat, a canal's water, 'dull of eye'. 'In that sour and barren place, a spinster, who did not wish for the dry, un-rustling grass. I weep with mortification. Yet I was extremely happy.' Belben's angular syntax, frequent ellipses and unusual punctuation force the reader to slow down, think, and pay attention.
It becomes clear that Lavinia is full of regrets. Having nursed her mother through a long final illness, she has not had sex for 10 years and wonders if others now see her as 'not among the fuckers of this world'. She had assumed she would marry and have children, but nobody ever proposed; in today's world, of course, she would not consider herself 'a shrivelled person … an old maid' at 36, but things were different in the 1970s, something which makes her lack of shame all the more remarkable: 'I have woken sopping and swollen, with a devil to suppress between my legs.'
If this novel is as confessional as it seems, it is truly fearless: death, ageing, anorgasmia, loneliness, despair and madness are all here, jostling for attention, just as they do for many of us, for all we may seek to tune them out. Meanwhile, Lavinia learns to masturbate with an electric toothbrush.
The Robin Hood section is a change of gear so abrupt it risks whiplash. As a child Lavinia identified with the idea of a forest-dwelling outlaw ('the myth of the greenwood … a cosy, complete, limited life'), and loved books about children who live outdoors: BB's classic Brendon Chase and Arthur Ransome's Swallows and Amazons also form part of the fantasy. But this book is no fairy story, instead a sensuous, funny account of a sexual encounter between Hood and the wife of Sir Richard atte Lee, a figure from early medieval ballads. This is a vision of sexuality as pure, natural and incorruptible, a vital component in what today's pop psychologists might call Lavinia's 'love map'.
As the sections unfold, a succession of images and recollections relentlessly and obliquely illuminate one another in the manner of an Adam Curtis film. We glimpse Lavinia's relationship with her beloved but complicated mother ('something stiff and unyielding, fierce and loving') and learn more about her deep affinity for animals, particularly horses and dogs, both subjects of Belben's own later books; we understand her attitude to death, and to London; see the damage inflicted by her schooling, and witness her sustaining, at times ecstatic relationship with the natural world (her account of a trip to Scotland beats nearly all of today's nature writing into a cocked hat). She imagines the daughter she might have had, and names her 'Jessie', but dwells uneasily on the very different childhood she would doubtless have compared with her own: 'She would reckon a Forestry Commission plantation is a nice wood to walk in … she wouldn't have a clue about apples, how to pick them, how to store them: or pears.'
You can feel Lavinia/Belben thinking and imagining her way through something that she might otherwise have had the opportunity to understand in practice: the inevitable distance between generations and the inexorable pace of change. 'I am worried that Jessie won't read,' she writes [italics her own]. 'It would be my greatest dread.'
The last pages of Dreaming of Dead People dissolve into an impressionistic but carefully structured stream of consciousness, dwelling on ageing and mortality, loneliness and inner strength: extraordinary from any writer, but particularly from one in only her middle 30s. It is extremely beautiful, utterly convincing, and rivals anything by Virginia Woolf. 'There comes a time for making peace with oneself,' Belben writes, as Lavinia. 'Life as I have known it is ending. I am drying up … I am saying: here is a life, what do you make of it. And trying not to mind that you turn aside.'

Friday's line-up for Wilderness Festival includes Air, Orbital, Berlioz, Bear's Den, Georgia, Craig Charles, Rosie Lowe, and Nubiyan Twist. The festival takes place from July 31st to August 3rd and it presented by luxury car brand, Audi. The event combines music, arts, wellbeing sessions, artisanship, late-night parties, outdoor activities and culinary experiences in the Oxfordshire countryside. Since its inception in 2011, Wilderness has become a popular music festival and has been attended by stars including Sophie Turner and Florence Pugh. It has been described as Britain's poshest festival as it has featured lavish amenities including yurts, mindfulness classes and champagne picnics over the years.

Next Bond movie will be written by Oscar nominated filmmaker behind iconic TV show
THE brains behind smash hit show Peaky Blinders has been signed up to write the next James Bond film – and he is promising to make it 'better, stronger and bolder'. Diehard fans of the suave spy had feared Bond would lose its identity after Amazon bought the franchise for $1billion in February. 2 2 But with 65-year-old Brummie Steven Knight at the helm, 007 expert Matthew Field says it is proof its British heritage will be preserved. He told The Sun: 'Amazon could easily have hired an A-list US writer but they chose Knight, a truly great British writer, who understands Bond's importance. 'He has a solid pedigree in film and TV that spans more than 25 years so it will be really exciting to see his world of Bond for a whole new generation of fans.' It is a job that Steven, who also wrote SAS: Rogue Heroes and co-created Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?, says was always on his bucket list. Mega signing The youngest of seven children, he was raised by dad George, a blacksmith, and mum Ida, a bookie's runner. He has spoken about how gangster series Peaky Blinders, set in 1920s Small Heath, near Solihull in his home city, was inspired by tales of his dad's gangster uncles and his mum's work. The BBC drama ran for six series from 2013 to 2022, helping to attract record numbers of tourists to England's second city. The final outing became the BBC iPlayer's most streamed series of the year and the show is credited with seeing a resurgence in popularity for the names Arthur and Aida. The industrial revolution-inspired show featured Sir Lenny Henry, UB40, Duran Duran, Ozzy Osbourne and a 33ft mechanical bull. Two years earlier, he received a CBE for services to drama and the community in Birmingham. He said he planned to celebrate 'Tommy Shelby-style' in reference to the main Peaky Blinders character and his love of whisky and cigarettes. Now the creative force behind Bond, he told BBC Radio 5 Live: 'I'm hoping that, being a Bond fan for so many years, it'll be imbued into me and I'll be able to produce something that's the same but different, and better, stronger and bolder.'

THERE was no more glorious time for showbiz than the late Nineties – just ask Katie Price and Kerry Katona. They've been queens of the scene for nearly 30 years, forged in the fire of the Chinawhite club, lads' mags and cheesy pop. 6 6 So while big nights together might now involve a takeaway and a crime documentary, they hanker after those halcyon days when being famous was fun, and showbiz parties didn't mean dodging influencers there solely to capture their 'content'. Kerry, 44, said: 'That's when pop stars and celebrities were proper celebrities! It's not like that now. 'I think me and Kate are like the two originals who are left.' Katie, 47, adds: 'I think we are. You're just sitting there and thinking, who's still going? There isn't anyone from back in those days. But that was the best time of my life!' Kerry chimes in: 'And mine. But there's no picture of me falling out of a nightclub!' Katie laughs: 'There was of me.' After they burst into the spotlight in the late 1990s, the two have remained best pals, sticking together through six husbands, ten kids, all the scandal and all the drama. They finish each other's sentences, I can't get a word in edgeways ('You won't need those questions, love,' Kerry trills) and they cackle, constantly. Grinning as she remembers those early days when she first made it big as The Sun's Page Three queen, Katie goes on: 'London is so different now. A Katie/Kerry sandwich 'We knew that back in the day, Chinawhite, Wednesday; Saturdays, Emporium; and Twice As Nice on a Sunday. Oh my God, I'm smiling because I look back at them days, the music, everything. Kerry Katona admits she 'didn't like' close pal Katie Price's Jordan alter-ego as she reveals she persuaded her to do OnlyFans 'It was just . . . you'd be excited to go out. Now I don't go to events unless I'm being paid to be there.' Kerry agrees: 'Unless you pay me to go, I wouldn't go.' And, believe it or not, they still get paid handsomely to do so. Despite more than their fair share of headlines, these girls remain showbiz royalty and can still book out a venue — which is what finds me snuggled up on a sofa, in a Katie and Kerry sandwich. The thing is, with me and Kerry, we didn't map out what our lives would be. We didn't know we'd still be here 30 years on Katie Price Kerry said: 'We are relatable. That's why we're still here, because we have been through sh*t. And there's not many people in this industry who are authentic. 'We weren't like nine-year-old little girls going, 'When I grow up, I want to get married three times, I want to have five children, to three different men' but that is life.' Katie adds: 'The thing is, with me and Kerry, we didn't map out what our lives would be. We didn't know we'd still be here 30 years on. And not many people we started out with are still here — so we must be here for a reason.' With another cackle, Kerry adds: 'I think it's because of our new tt jobs.' Their baggy tops can't hide the fact both are sporting fresh and perky new assets, but there was a time when both of the surgery-loving ladies were considered natural beauties. They met in the early days, but grew inseparable after their shared stint on I'm A Celebrity in 2004. It makes them each other's most successful relationship, I venture. Kerry said: 'We've got lots of love for each other. I know I could tell Kate anything and it wouldn't go anywhere else. 'I can go three months and not speak to Kate and just pick up where we left. Because that's the real thing. 'You don't have to be on a phone with each other 24 hours a day. That's a real friendship. There are things nobody knows anything about I have told Kate, and Kate has told me things, and it goes no further.' Kerry married Westlife star Brian McFadden in 2002, Mark Croft in 2007 and George Kay in 2014. Katie's first was Peter Andre in 2005 — with Kerry as a bridesmaid — then Alex Reid in 2010 and Kieran Hayler in 2013. Maybe they should just commit to each other, I muse. Kerry laughs: 'We said that! We might as well!' 6 Katie adds: 'We actually did say that. We said we could do a wedding programme where we're marrying each other.' It's probably no surprise that sources have suggested they'd once enjoyed a romantic relationship. The double act trill: 'What are those sources? HP and ketchup!' Kerry adds: 'Oh please. Seriously. Silly! But there's love there isn't there Kate?' Katie said: 'There's always going to be love there.' It's even easier to hang out now that their daughters, Katie's Princess and Kerry's Heidi, both 18, are also best mates. The 'momagers' have got big hopes for their girls — and scoff at any claims of nepotism. Kerry said: 'I'm desperate for Princess and Heidi to do the Jungle together. Imagine. 'I can see it in her eyes' Katie added: 'I always say Love Island. Heidi and Princess need to do it together.' Kerry said: 'The way I see it is, forget management, forget fame, what an amazing memory. What an amazing adventure. 'So I think if Heidi goes to Love Island for three months and has the best time then that's amazing. This is our family business. This is what we do as a family Kerry Katona 'Both me and Kate have done every reality show. 'We are the reality queens. We're part of TV history. When we did I'm A Celebrity, the ratings were the highest they ever had. And we're a part of that. 'Everyone talks about nepotism right, but everyone has a contact for somebody. They promise this production will be a little more sophisticated though — unless Jordan comes out to play. Kerry said: 'With Kate, I can see the alter ego change, when she goes from Kate to being Jordan I can see it in her eyes. 'Sometimes I have to go, get back in your box.' Katie said: 'She gets embarrassed! Like when we did adult panto, she can't bear it! You'd think that with her Only Fans, Kerry would be quite cool with it.' Both me and Kate, we've done the drugs, we've done the bankruptcy, we've done the divorces, we have lost so much. We are still here. No one's prepared to straighten each other's crown, and that's what me and Kate do for each other. That is what this tour is about.' With Kate, I can see the alter ego change, when she goes from Kate to being Jordan I can see it in her eyes Kerry Katona Katie adds: 'And how it's changed us as people. I don't like to say I'm glad I've gone through it, but it's made me who I am today, and that is a lot more happy. I'm in the best place I've ever been.' It wouldn't be a tour with these two without them belting out some ballads, and they've even promised some dancing. Maybe things haven't changed that much from nights in Chinawhite, after all. Katie said: 'The thing is, I don't know what it's like to have a nine- to-five job, getting on the train, working in an office. I have no idea what that life would be. I've been doing it from such a young age.' Kerry added: 'We do it 24 hours every day. We are badass boss bitches. We run our own sh*t and we are creating this ourselves.'
