"If Dolan puts the Knicks for sale, I will be the first one in line" - Magic sets sights on control of iconic NY franchise originally appeared on Basketball Network.
Magic Johnson has long been associated with the Los Angeles Lakers, admitting it would be hard to fathom him taking control of another team. However, Earvin shockingly revealed what is the one franchise he wouldn't mind owning.

"If Dolan puts the [New York] Knicks for sale, I will be the first one in line," Johnson said when he appeared on ESPN.
It was a surprising take by the 65-year-old, who has had ownership opportunities in the past. The Atlanta Hawks, Detroit Pistons, and Golden State Warriors were among the teams offered to Magic.
However, Johnson admitted that to this day, people still approach him for potential ownership opportunities. Each time, he stressed that his loyalty remains with Purple & Gold.
Magic's interest in the Knicks explained
Earvin cautioned that his interest in the New York Knicks is merely hypothetical. There have been no discussions between him and team owner James Dolan. Hence, it would be best not to jump to conclusions.

"That one you would really have to think about, in terms of being a minority owner of that team," Johnson said of the Knicks via the Associated Press. "But other than that, I would just stay with the Lakers, and even with my role now, just being a fan, I'm happy just doing that with the Lakers because, again, I bleed Purple & Gold."
Magic admitted that he would be open to seeing what is on the table if something is offered to him. And as far as his sudden interest in the New York franchise, Johnson shared that one reason was the fan base, especially this 2024-25 season.
"The Knicks are the Knicks. New York is New York. And I love the way the fans respond. This city was on fire," he added.

Why Magic could get his wish
Hypothetical or not, any discussion on a potential Knicks sale would be huge. Dolan once admitted that he didn't like owning teams, explaining that he found the economics of professional sports "kind of sleepy."

This explains why James has not made a concerted effort to make the Knicks competitive. Instead, the franchise has made significant strides through the efforts of people like Tom Thibodeau. Unfortunately, Thibs is no longer around, fired after NY's ouster in the Eastern Conference finals.
With Dolan half-heartedly caring about the Knicks' plight, perhaps exploring talks with Johnson or some other interested investors would make sense. Magic loves the sport so much that his passion could turn New York's fortunes around.
Also, his interest in hooking up with the Knicks is nothing new. When Earvin was still actively playing, the 6-foot-9 point guard also considered moving to The Big Apple in 1992. However, seeing how New York already had two guards, Mark Jackson and Greg Anthony, it never came to fruition.
Hence, Johnson's links with the Knicks are well-documented. Given his dedication to winning, Seeing Magic take over would be something. However, personnel and players need to beware, too. Earvin has high standards when it comes to winning; meaning heads will roll if he is not satisfied with how the team is performing.

The Athletic NBA Daily's 2025 NBA Draft preview

The 2025 NBA Draft kicks off at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York, on June 25. The Dallas Mavericks hold the No. 1 overall pick after winning the lottery and are set to draft Cooper Flagg. Dylan Harper, the six-foot-five guard from Rutgers, is projected to go No. 2 to the San Antonio Spurs. But after that, the draft becomes much harder to predict. Advertisement On the latest episode of 'The Athletic NBA Daily', Andrew Schlecht and Alex Speers were joined by The Athletic's Sam Vecenie to preview how the event might unfold. Watch the full episode below. They discussed how the top prospects from last year's class would rank among this year's current crop; the impact that name, image, and likeness (NIL) rights have had on the draft and particularly the depth into the second round; and how NIL has incentivized more international players to pursue the college route. Andrew, Alex and Sam also explored whether teams might look to trade away second-round picks due to the shallower pool of talent, which teams could be the most aggressive in trading up for V.J. Edgecombe or Ace Bailey, whether Edgecombe, Bailey, Kon Knueppel, or Tre Johnson have star potential, and also looked at the chances of the Spurs moving the No. 2 overall pick. Later in the show, the trio broke down how Sam's draft philosophy has evolved over the years, analyzed Jeremiah Fears' game and looked at the most polarizing players in this year's draft, compared Khaman Maluach to other recent seven-foot lottery picks with offensive question marks and looked at how Carter Bryant's game might translate to the NBA level. 'Tread Lightly!' Jets Star Considers Taunting Steelers Fans

'Tread Lightly!' Jets Star Considers Taunting Steelers Fans originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The best corners are invisible on Sundays, doing their work out of the broadcast angle's frame, shadow-realming top receivers and leaving their fingerprints on their opponents' plans. Advertisement And yet, defensive backs are showmen. They boast after wildly inaccurate passes, lead their teammates to the end zone after turnovers, and crave the spotlight as much as their spiritual counterparts on the other side of the line of scrimmage. New York Jets corner Sauce Gardner is no different. As one of the top corners in the sport and an electric young talent, Gardner's quick start earned him that attention. And with a knack for getting just physical enough to impact the receiver without generating a penalty, he has no shortage of critics waiting for his next mistake. He welcomes that challenge, and he isn't afraid to put himself in the crosshairs of a fanbase. The New York faithful might remember Gardner parading with a Cheesehead after defeating the Green Bay Packers. Gardner already has his eyes on Week 1. Advertisement The Jets star is considering taunting Pittsburgh Steelers fans with a terrible towel gesture to open the season. "I don't know. Pittsburgh, you get a little in the trenches in there," Gardner said. "I might have to tread lightly, but we play (in New York). We on home court. I don't know, I've got to think about it." Pittsburgh dismantled New York in quarterback Russell Wilson's debut, 37-15. Now, Wilson is in East Rutherford, playing for the New York Giants. Even so, Week 1 will be full of storylines. The Steelers signed former Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers in June, providing what should be an upgrade over Wilson and Justin Fields a season ago. Of course, Fields will get his shot at revenge, too, having signed a two-year deal with the Jets early in free agency. Advertisement Gardner may be emboldened by a new-look offense, but Pittsburgh will be favored, even on the road. Playing at MetLife Stadium takes some of the punch away from any terrible towel-based taut, but the threat will put him on Steelers fans' radar. He'll have criticism waiting for him if he doesn't make good on his playful confidence. Related: How Much Are the Steelers Paying Aaron Rodgers? Former NBA Player Urges Grizzlies to Trade Ja Morant

Former NBA Player Urges Grizzlies to Trade Ja Morant originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Memphis Grizzlies on Sunday pulled off a trade that surprised the NBA. As the NBA Finals continued, the young Orlando Magic cracked open its championship window by acquiring guard Desmond Bane from the Grizzlies, in exchange for Cole Anthony, Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, four unprotected first-round picks and one pick swap. Advertisement The Bane trade signals that the Grizzlies are going in a different direction for the 2025-26 seasons. Following the in-season dismissal of longtime head coach Taylor Jenkins, Memphis reached the playoffs with a 48-34 record -- only to suffer a four-game sweep at the hands of the eventual Western Conference champion Oklahoma City Thunder. The Thunder appear poised for long-term success in the West, while the Houston Rockets, the Los Angeles Lakers and the San Antonio Spurs could soon enter title windows themselves. Against this backdrop, ESPN's Jay Williams believes the time is now for Memphis to deal Ja Morant, its controversial franchise point guard. "I saw Desmond Bane get traded for five first-round picks," the former NBA point guard Williams said Monday on "Get Up." "I wonder what the value for Ja Morant could be." Advertisement After a shoulder injury and a 25-game suspension limited him to nine games during the 2023-24 season, Morant guided the Grizzlies back to the playoffs this season while averaging 23.2 points and 7.3 assists per game. However, Morant played just 50 regular-season games; over the past three seasons, he has missed 126 of a possible 246 games. "The best way to build a culture is not based upon unpredictability," Williams said of Morant's frequent absences. Williams further cited Morant's lack of maturity -- including his incidents with firearms -- as a reason why the Grizzlies could opt to move Morant as he enters the final two years of his contract. And using the Bane return as a barometer, the Grizzlies could effectively reset their franchise by moving the two-time All-Star Morant. "I think his value is still high," Williams said. "He is box office. I think there are franchises out there that would give up a boatload of assets for Ja Morant."
