Goldman's profit tops estimates as market turbulence powers record equities revenue
NEW YORK: Goldman Sachs' second-quarter profit exceeded Wall Street expectations, as turbulent markets raised revenue in its equities division to a record, and a pickup in dealmaking boosted investment banking. The results capture a growing trend of market turmoil boosting trading desks across Wall Street as investors rebalance their portfolios to manage tariff-related risks. Goldman's equities revenue rose 36% to $4.3 billion, higher than the $3.6 billion analysts were expecting, according to estimates compiled by LSEG. Fixed income, currencies, and commodities business hauled in $3.47 billion, 9% higher than a year ago. Financing revenue in both equities and FICC hit a record. While shifting tariff risks kept some companies on the sidelines, pent-up demand for dealmaking triggered a flurry of acquisitions. Still, trade policy uncertainty in recent weeks has revived concerns about how long the momentum would last. Goldman's peers JPMorgan Chase and Citigroup reported strong growth in investment banking fees, while Morgan Stanley and Bank of America posted declines. 'A narrowed range of outcomes on trade and the overall economy has helped CEO confidence and increased their willingness to transact. We've seen a pickup in momentum with both strategic and sponsor clients,' Goldman CEO David Solomon said. Goldman's investment banking fees stood at $2.19 billion, rising 26% from a year ago. Analysts were expecting a nearly 10% jump. The bank remained the top adviser by deal value on mergers and acquisitions globally in the second quarter, according to Dealogic data. It advised Holcim on the spinoff of its North American business Amrize, now valued at $28 billion. It also worked with Informatica, which was bought by Salesforce for about $8 billion. 'The well-above consensus rise in investment banking was (a surprise), with a lot of analysts snookered into thinking that macro uncertainty would hold back this line item more than it did,' said Stephen Biggar, director of financial services research at Argus Research. Advisory fees were significantly higher due to strength in the Americas and Europe, the Middle East, and Africa, the bank said.

India's Bandhan Bank quarterly profit slumps on higher bad loan provisions
Indian private lender Bandhan Bank reported a steeper-than-expected 65% drop in first-quarter profit on Friday, hit by a spike in bad loan provisions as its asset quality worsened. Profit for the quarter ended June fell to 3.72 billion rupees ($43.2 million), from 10.63 billion rupees a year ago. Analysts had expected it to log a profit of 3.83 billion rupees, according to data compiled by LSEG. Bandhan Bank, which transitioned from a microfinance lender to a universal bank in 2015, has grappled with higher bad loans in its micro-loan book over the last few quarters, forcing it to set aside more funds for potential bad loans. India to issue climate risk disclosure rules for banks in the next few months, sources say Provisions and contingencies in the quarter jumped to 11.47 billion rupees from 5.23 billion rupees in the same quarter a year ago. They were, however, lower than the 12.6 billion rupees in the prior quarter. Gross bad loans as a percentage of total loans, a measure of asset quality, rose to 4.96% in the quarter from 4.71% in the prior quarter. Fresh slippages, or bad loan additions, were at 15.5 billion rupees, sharply higher than 8.9 billion rupees in the year ago quarter. Oil extends gain on Iraq outages, tight market supports
SINGAPORE: Oil prices extended gainson Friday, underpinned by supply concerns following drone attacks on northern Iraqi oilfields and tight market fundamentals amid healthy summer demand. Brent crude futures climbed 29 cents, or 0.40%, to $69.81 a barrel as of 0451 GMT, U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude futures advanced 27 cents, or 0.42%, to $67.81 a barrel. Four days of drone attacks on oilfields in Iraqi Kurdistan that shut down half the region's output have supported prices, pushing both contracts up $1 on Thursday. Additionally, seasonal travel demand has propped up the market. In the first two weeks of July, global oil demand has averaged 105.2 million barrels per day (bpd), up by 600,000 bpd from a year earlier and largely in line with forecast, JPMorgan analysts said in a research note. 'Crude prices have been broadly stable this week, with no significant moves as the impact of OPEC+ supply increases has been offset by strong seasonal demand in the U.S.,' said LSEG's analyst Anh Pham. U.S. crude inventories fell a larger-than-expected last week as exports rose, government data on Wednesday showed. Demand in Asia also firmed as refineries came back from maintenance amid peak seasonal demand. Near-term oil fundamentals are likely to remain supportive, with the market set to remain fairly tight through this quarter, before becoming better supplied from the last three months of the year, ING analysts said in a note on Friday. Still, the uncertainty around U.S. tariff policy, which appears unlikely to be settled until after August 1, is weighing on the market. Plans by major oil producers to remove output cuts will also add to supply as the seasonal Northern Hemisphere summer demand ends. For this week, both Brent and WTI were down more than 1%. Oil output in the semi-autonomous Kurdistan region has been slashed from about 280,000 bpd to between 140,000 bpd and 150,000 bpd, two energy officials said. Officials pointed to Iran-backed militias as the likely source of attacks this week on the region's oilfields, although no group has claimed responsibility. Despite the attack, Iraq's federal government said on Thursday that Iraqi Kurdistan will resume oil exports through a pipeline to Turkey after a two-year halt.
