'PSG caused Liverpool the most problems this season'
Former Liverpool goalkeeper Sander Westerveld spoke to BBC Radio 5 Live Breakfast about the Reds' win in Paris and the quality Paris Saint-Germain showed. On PSG keeper Gianluigi Donnarumma being beaten late on by Harvey Elliott's finish, Westerveld said: "He got a hand to it and I think it touched the inside of the post. As a goalkeeper, you feel that you should have done a little bit more and gone with a stronger hand so I really felt sorry for him."Paris Saint-Germain must have been walking off the pitch feeling sorry for themselves. But they have an unbelievable side and they caused Liverpool the most problems this season."The home side had 27 shots in this match – the second-most on record (from 2003-04) for a side in a Champions League knockout match in which they both failed to score and lost, behind only PSG themselves v Borussia Dortmund in May 2024 (30)."They will play the same next week so Liverpool really has to step up and play differently because otherwise they can still beat Liverpool even 4-0 at Anfield," Westerveld added.

Darwin Nunez approves Liverpool transfer exit as star left ‘disappointed'
Liverpool have had a very busy summer transfer window so far having completed deals for Jeremie Frimpong and Florian Wirtz with exits now potentially on the agenda for the Reds Liverpool have shown no appetite of letting go of their Premier League crown next season. The Reds claimed the title with style last year and have already invested heavily ahead of next term. Liverpool 's first signing of the summer came in the form of Jeremie Frimpong from Bayer Leverkusen, who was followed to Anfield by former teammate Florian Wirtz. The Merseysiders have already announced a record deal for the latter. Young goalkeeper Armin Pecsi has also arrived at the club. But the signings might not stop there. Bournemouth star Milos Kerkez is on the verge of a move, while Crystal Palace star Marc Guehi is also right at the top of their shopping list. Amid the club's big spending, there could also be some exits from Anfield. A host of stars have already been linked with departures over the coming weeks. With that being said, take a look at the latest transfer news and rumours from Anfield. Nunez 'green lights' exit Liverpool striker Darwin Nunez has opened the door to a possible exit having given the go-ahead for talks with Napoli. The Uruguayan faces an uncertain future with the Reds having struggled for consistency. As per reports, Serie A champions Napoli are among the clubs who could move for him. And he has approved a potential move having had the club's project presented to him. While Nunez is up for a move to Italy, there is still a significant stumbling block in the way: Liverpool's demands. Napoli now have to find an agreement with the Reds, who are not keen on cashing in on the cheap. Konate 'disappointed' at offer Liverpool star Ibrahim Konate is reportedly 'disappointed' at Liverpool's first attempts to keep him at the club. The Frenchman defender has just a year remaining on his contract at Anfield amid links with Real Madrid. Liverpool are keen on retaining him but Konate is far from convinced by their new offer, with the structure of the proposal not getting his approval. It is suggested that Konate's representatives are pushing for higher wages. Liverpool have already been linked with signing a new defender this summer, with Crystal Palace star Marc Guehi at the top of their shortlist. Frimpong gives Wirtz verdict Jeremie Frimpong has hailed Liverpool's signing of Florian Wirtz, having expressed his intent to win trophies alongside the German. On the deal, the Dutch defender said:"Now that it's official, it's the best feeling. 'When I first came to Leverkusen, Flo was the one that took me in. Now we're doing it all over again – so it's good. I've been in Leverkusen for four and a half years, and I won everything. 'I won the Pokal. I won the Super Cup. I won the Bundesliga. So I wanted a new challenge. With Celtic, I won the treble. With Leverkusen, the double. So in Liverpool, I also want to win trophies." Tuesday's briefing: PSG avoid early Club World Cup exit but Atletico Madrid out
But Diego Simeone's Atletico Madrid are packing their bags after a 1-0 win over Botafogo did not prove enough to earn them a place in the last 16. Meanwhile, Brentford appear close to appointing their set-piece coach Keith Andrews as successor to Thomas Frank. M.V.P 👏🏆#FIFACWC — Paris Saint-Germain (@PSG_inside) June 23, 2025 Paris St Germain bounced back from their shock loss to Botafogo to beat Seattle Sounders 2-0 and reach the last 16 of the Club World Cup as Group B winners. Goals from Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and Achraf Hakimi proved enough for the European champions, who had gone into the game on the brink of a shock early exit from the tournament. Seattle, hosting the game at their own Lumen Stadium, missed a chance to take an early lead through Jesus Ferreira and also pressed late on, but otherwise PSG cruised home. PSG took the lead in the 35th minute when the ball broke to the edge of the box from a corner and Vitinha's shot took a heavy deflection off Kvaratskhelia on its way into the bottom corner. And they sealed their win in the 66th minute moments after Seattle had come close to an equaliser, a swift counter-attack ending in Bradley Barcola squaring the ball for Hakimi to sweep home his side's second. Fulltime in Pasadena. — Atlético de Madrid (@atletienglish) June 23, 2025 Atletico Madrid failed to do enough to progress in the Club World Cup despite claiming a late 1-0 win over Botafogo in Pasadena. Diego Simeone's side had bounced back from a 4-0 thrashing by Paris St Germain in their first Group B game to beat Seattle Sounders – but were still left needing to defeat the Brazilian champions by at least three goals to qualify for the last 16. Instead it was Botafogo who looked more likely to break the deadlock in the early stages with Atletico keeper Jan Oblak saving well to deny Jefferson Savarino and Igor Jesus. Substitute Antoine Griezmann found the net in the 87th minute when he swept home Julian Alvarez's low cross from the left but it was not enough and Botafogo will face the Group A runners-up at the next stage. Keith Andrews has emerged as the leading candidate to take over as Brentford's new head coach, the PA news agency understands. The Bees are continuing their recruitment process to find Thomas Frank's replacement after he left to take over at Premier League rivals Tottenham, and no definitive timescale has been set. Irishman Andrews, 44, joined Brentford last summer and while largely credited with the club's set-piece success, his role at the Gtech Community Stadium is all-encompassing. The former midfielder has built up a strong reputation following coaching roles with Sheffield United, MK Dons and the Republic of Ireland, where he was assistant manager to Stephen Kenny. Following Frank's departure, Brentford are expected to announce a restructure of the coaching set-up ahead of the new Premier League season, which begins at Nottingham Forest on August 16. The Portuguese side rebounded from an opening draw with Boca Juniors by hammering hapless Auckland City 6-0 and yet still stand on the brink of elimination. Defeat against the German giants is likely to let in Boca, who are highly likely to find the net multiple times against the outclassed New Zealanders, leaving the destiny of Group C on a knife-edge.
