Nagai–Kankesanthurai ferry completes one year, carries over 20,000 passengers
The service is operated by Subham Ferry, a subsidiary of Subham Group, using the vessel Sivagangai. Chairperson Sundarraj Ponnusamy said passenger numbers have grown steadily, boosting tourism, trade, and cultural ties between the two countries.
In its first year, 10,825 passengers sailed from Nagapattinam to KKS and 9,816 from KKS to Nagapattinam. The highest single-day bookings were on Aug 13, when 152 people travelled from India, and on Oct 29, 2024, when 141 passengers came from Sri Lanka.
On Saturday, Subham Ferry and the crew marked the start of the second year by distributing sweets and souvenirs to passengers at Nagapattinam Port. The company has announced a special package for students, offering a three-day tour in India or Sri Lanka along with a round-trip ticket for ₹9,999.
The Nagapattinam–KKS link was relaunched in Oct 2023 after a 40-year gap, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi flagging off the service virtually. Initially run briefly by the Shipping Corporation of India, it was taken over by Subham Group in Aug 2024. The Sivagangai resumed operations in February this year after a short suspension.
With passenger demand rising, the ferry now operates six days a week, up from three. "We aim to increase trips to over 200 next year and expect passenger numbers to cross 30,000," Ponnusamy said.

PM Modi To Inaugurate 2 Highway Projects In Big Push To Declog Delhi
New Delhi: In a major infrastructure push to ease traffic congestion and reduce travel time across Delhi and several other cities in the National Capital Region, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will shortly inaugurate two major projects -- the Urban Extension Road-II and Dwarka Expressway. The two projects, with a combined cost of Rs 11,000 crore, reflect Prime Minister Modi's vision of "creating world-class infrastructure that enhances ease of living and ensures seamless mobility", the Prime Minister's Office has said ahead of the inauguration event at Rohini today. Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini and Union Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari are also at the event. The Urban Extension Road - II, a six-lane expressway over 75 km long, begins at NH 44, passes through Rohini, Mundka, Najafgarh, Dwarka and ends at Delhi-Gurugram Expressway on NH-48 near Mahipalpur. It forms a semi-circle on Delhi's western side. The Prime Minister today opened the Alipur-Dichaon Kalan stretch of Urban Extension Road-II with new links to Bahadurgarh and Sonipat. This stretch, the construction of which cost Rs 5,580 crore, will ease traffic on Delhi's Inner and Outer Ring Roads and choke points like Mukarba Chowk, Dhaula Kuan and NH-09. "The new spurs will give direct access to Bahadurgarh and Sonipat, improve industrial connectivity, cut city traffic, and speed up goods movement in the NCR," the PMO said. According to officials, the new link will reduce travel time from Indira Gandhi International Airport to various points in southwest and northwest Delhi by 40 to 60 per cent. The other project the Prime Minister opened today is a 10.1-km Delhi section of Dwarka Expressway. Developed for Rs 5,360 crore, this section will boost connectivity to Yashobhoomi, Delhi Metro's Blue and Orange lines, the upcoming Bijwasan railway station and Dwarka cluster Bus Depot. There are two sections of this stretch: a 5.9-km stretch from Shiv Murti intersection to Road Under Bridge at Dwarka Sector-21, and a 4.2-km section from Dwarka Sector-21 to the Delhi-Haryana Border and providing connectivity between the Dwarka Expressway and Urban Extension Road-II. In March last year, the Prime Minister inaugurated the 19-km Haryana section of the Dwarka Expressway.

Cars, SUVs, Two-Wheelers Could Attract GST Cut Soon
The government of India is planning a significant relief for prospective car and two-wheeler buyers in the country. The GOI is looking forward to bringing a new GST regime, creating distinctions in the tax rates. Looking at the current scenario, the small cars attract 28 per cent GST plus small cess rates of 1-3 per cent. Meanwhile, the SUVs attract up to 50 percent tax, including GST and cess rates. However, the government is planning to propose a bill that might reduce the GST rates for cars and two-wheelers in India. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in his Independence Day speech, hinted at the plans. Apart from cars, SUVs, and two-wheelers, the government is also planning to reduce the tax rates for air conditioners and construction materials. The Merit category will feature goods and products with GST rates up to 5 percent. Meanwhile, the Standard GST category will attract 18 percent GST. While the exact details have not been announced yet, the government is planning to introduce the new GST regime by Diwali this year. This move by the Central Government is expected to benefit all sectors of the Indian automotive industry. With the reduced GST rates, the manufacturing and components prices might also get a push, and lead to high manufacturing rates. The one category that might receive immediate benefit is the small cars under Rs 10 lakh and the entry-level motorcycles. However, the electric cars are liley to continue with 5 percent GST rates, also the GST rates on luxury cars might remain the same.

Delhi traffic advisory for Rohini ahead of highway inauguration
The Delhi Traffic Police has issued a traffic advisory for Sunday, August 17, due to the inauguration of two major highway projects by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Rohini. These projects include the Delhi section of the Dwarka Expressway and the Alipur–Dichaon Kalan stretch of the Urban Extension Road-II (UER-II). Developed at a cost of nearly 11,000 crore, these projects aim to improve connectivity, reduce congestion, and decrease travel time throughout the national capital and surrounding regions. However, commuters should be prepared for traffic restrictions in several will be affected in Tikri Border, Peeragarhi, and Rohini from 6 AM to 2 PM. According to the advisory, commercial vehicles will not be permitted on Rohtak Road between Tikri Border and Peeragarhi in both directions. For those travelling from Tikri Border to Peeragarhi, an alternative route is suggested via Jharoda–Najafgarh–Nangloi Urban Extension Road-II (UER-II) will remain closed for the day, along with Rohtak Road and its connecting roads. Other affected stretches include Bhagwan Mahavir Road, Bawana Road, Kanjhawala Road, Kanjhawala Link Road, and Badsha Dahiya Rohini, vehicles will not be permitted on roads coming from the Ring Road towards the area. Divergent points include Madhuban Chowk, Outer Ring Road crossings at K.N. Katju Marg and Rohini Jail Road, Deepali Chowk, Jaipur Golden Hospital Crossing, and Mahadev Chowk. Residents of Rohini have been advised to use alternative routes such as K.N. Katju Marg and Rohini Jail commercial vehicles, different points include Tikri Border, Ghevra More, Mundka Red Light, Nangloi Chowk, Bakkarwala More, Jharoda Road under Bahadurgarh Flyover Toll, and Jharoda Nala under Bahadurgarh Flyover, leading to traffic police advisory urges commuters to plan their travel in advance and consider alternative routes or public transport to avoid inconvenience. Metro services have been suggested as the best option for those travelling in the affected the inauguration of the Dwarka Expressway (Delhi section) and UER-II, the projects are expected to bring a major boost to connectivity in Delhi-NCR, ease traffic congestion, and benefit daily commuters in the long run.- Ends advertisement
