STF intensifies crackdown on illegal immigrants in Odisha, warns of strict action
BHUBANESWAR: The Special Task Force (STF) of the Crime Branch has intensified surveillance on entry and movement of illegal immigrants in Odisha.
The agency has also warned of stringent action against such persons and middle-men involved in facilitating their unauthorised entry into the state.
'A close vigil is being kept on the movement of illegal immigrants from neighbouring Bangladesh and other countries. We are in constant touch with the state and central agencies for swift exchange of information related to such matters,' said STF DIG, Pinak Mishra.
Sources said STF and police of various coastal districts like Balasore, Bhadrak, Kendrapara and Jagatsinghpur have intensified intelligence gathering to thwart attempts of any unauthorised entry into the state.
Mishra's statement came after the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) set a 30-day deadline for states and UTs to verify the credentials of persons suspected to be illegal immigrants from Bangladesh and Myanmar, who claim to be citizens of India. After the said period, if their documents are not verified, they would face deportation.
On March 9 this year, STF had arrested 10 illegal Bangladeshi immigrants including six men, three women and a minor from Bhubaneswar railway station. They had reportedly crossed the border near Dhubri in Assam with the help of an agent. Acting on a tip-off, the agency conducted a raid and nabbed the Bangladeshis after they deboarded a train. During verification, they were unable to produce their passports, visas and travel documents.

Lured with hospital jobs, 3 Bangladeshi women trafficked to Mumbai and forced into sex trade
The Malvani police arrested a 53-year-old man Saturday and are currently searching for his three accomplices for allegedly trafficking three women from Bangladesh to Mumbai, misleading them with false promises of employment at a hospital, only to force them into the sex trade. The police rescued the three Bangladeshi women and sent them to a shelter home. Last month, they were allegedly brought to Mumbai by illegally crossing the international border between India and Bangladesh. The accused allegedly bribed some government officials at the border to facilitate their illegal entry into India. The police registered a suo motu FIR and arrested Mansar Ahmed Sheikh, a Malvani resident, and are looking for Mehandi Hassan, Sanjeev alias Bachchan, and Akash alias Shaheen. The group members also allegedly helped one of the three women in making an Aadhaar card in her name to conceal her Bangladeshi nationality, an officer said. The four accused have been booked under sections 143(3) [trafficking of person], 144(2) [Exploitation of a trafficked person], 336(3) [crime of forgery], and 3(5) [common intention] of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and sections 4 and 5 of the Illegal Trafficking (Prevention) Act. Minor girl killed after ‘sexual assault' in North East Delhi, probe on to nab accused
A minor girl was allegedly murdered after being sexually assaulted in North East Delhi Saturday evening, the Delhi Police said. According to the police, a call regarding the sexual assault of the minor was received at about 8.41 pm Saturday. 'Upon reaching the location, the police team found that a minor girl in an unconscious condition was present there,' Deputy Commissioner of Police (North East) Ashish Mishra said. The girl's father took the victim to the JPC Hospital, where the doctors declared her dead and a possible victim of sexual assault. 'Prima facie, the attending doctors at the hospital observed visible injuries on her face and alleged sexual assault,' DCP Mishra said. The crime and forensic team have now begun inspecting the crime scene to apprehend the accused. Meanwhile, a case has been registered under sections 103 (1) [murder], 66 [punishment for causing death or resulting in a persistent vegetative state of the victim], and 13 (2) [enhanced punishment for repeat offenders], of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), along with Section 6 (punishment for aggravated penetrative sexual assault) of the Pocso Act. In April this year, a 14-year-old boy from Uttarakhand, who was in Delhi to attend a sports event, was allegedly sexually assaulted by several other participants at a club in Outer North Delhi, the police had said. After the incident came to light, an 18-year-old was arrested, and five other minors were apprehended, the police added. In his statement to the police, the boy said that on April 22, he was stripped and assaulted by multiple boys participating in the event. Meanwhile, crime data shared by the Delhi Police shows that rape cases registered were 370 between January 1 to March 31 in 2025, down by 18.68 per cent compared to the same period in 2024, when it was 455. In 2023, the number of cases was 422 during the same period. Molestation cases for the first three months of 2025 also saw a dip of 14.63 per cent to 379 compared to 2024, when it was 444, and 30.71 per cent compared to 2023, when it was 547.
