UPDATE on Smart IDs for naturalised citizens

For the longest time, Smart IDs for naturalised citizens were simply not available. Almost unconstitutionally, anyone who'd become a lawful permanent resident in South Africa was effectively barred from obtaining one.
However, one-month ago, on Sunday 11 May 2025, Home Affairs Minister Dr. Leon Schreiber announced Smart IDs for naturalised citizens were finally going ahead. It is understood that more than 1.4-million lawful permanent residents are now eligible for the latest ID. Government has long touted the enhanced security of the Smart ID card. And yet millions were unable to access it, until now. Image: File
Frankly, we were appalled that such a situation even existed. In the past we were regularly contacted by readers on our WhatsApp line. Despite having all the same constitutionally enshrined rights, naturalised citizens were being discriminated against for decades. To become a naturalised South African citizen, you must first hold permanent residency for at least five years.
However, the good news is that Smart IDs for naturalised citizens are now available to anyone eligible through the e-Home Affairs platform. The application cost is R140. 'This is a major milestone on the digital transformation journey of Home Affairs. It is a victory for social inclusion and national security. These citizens and lawful residents were previously excluded from the Smart ID and restricted to the vulnerable green ID book,' said Dr. Schreiber Dr. Leon Schreiber's reforms at Home Affairs have been impressive in just over one year since taking office. Technology and IT system issues were the reason for unavailability of Smarts IDs for naturalised citizens prior, reports BusinessTech . Due to the vagaries of the old Home Affairs' paper-based system, only certain residents could access Smart IDs on an invite-only basis. This was because all processing had to be done manually.
Worse still, naturalised citizens were only permitted to visit a handful of outdated Home Affairs offices that still supported the issuing of old green ID booklets. Embarrassingly for previous leadership, Smart IDs have been around since 2013. And green ID booklets were purported to be phased out somewhere between 2018 and 2022. And yet, they still remain in use, despite government's own concerns about fraud and identity theft.

HOW government ineptitude wiped out R127 billion in TWO months

In unprecedented circumstances for the South African government, the country's predicted GDP fell by R127 billion between March and May 2025. How can anyone forget that Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana under GNU needed three stabs at tabling a fiscal budget in 2025? Initially, the Finance Minister's first Budget Speech was cancelled on 19 February 2025. Until he finally delivered his first address on 12 March 2025. In it, the Minister pegged South Africa's economic growth at an average of 1.8% over three years. Nearly 45% of residents receives some form of SASSA grant, which many argue is creating unsustainable dependency on social welfare. Image: File However, government saw that budget framework overturned in the court proceedings over the controversial VAT increases. And the process needed to begin again. Therefore, on 21 May 2025, Godongwana delivered an updated 2025 Budget. and in it GDP growth had weakened to 1.6% over three years. That 0.2% may not sound like a lot less, but over three years it represents R127 billion, reports Daily Investor . 'Global growth has faltered, and South Africa's economic outlook has also weakened, with GDP expected to grow by only 1.4% in 2025. Since the 2025 Budget Review publication in March, greater uncertainty and trade fragmentation have contributed to a weaker economic outlook,' justified Minister Godongwana. Is GNU helping or hindering South Africa, in light of the 2025 fiscal budget fiasco? Image: File However, on the face of it, aren't' economic circumstances improving? Eskom's power supply to the country is better than ever and fuel prices have been dropping all year. The trade feud with the United States government looks to be in check (for now) and there have been interest rate cuts across the board. So, why the sustained bleak outlook? Critically, the government spends the most money each year on two things: Servicing debt and social welfare. Neither of which create jobs to bring any money back into government coffers. Likewise, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) recently cut its economic growth forecast for South Africa to just 1%. Way lower than the anticipated 1.6%. And if the South African economy only grows by 1%, as the IMF predicts, even this subdued budget will have a big hole. As such, if government is forced to borrow yet more money, the already high debt-to-GDP ratio will only worsen … Let us know by leaving a comment below, or send a WhatsApp to 060 011 021 1. Activists detained in Egypt ahead of Gaza humanitarian march

The PAGAD delegation to Egypt was detained for 11 hours in Cairo, Egypt. Image: File A PAGAD (People Against Gangsterism and Drugs) delegation was detained for 11 hours and were at risk of deportation as they made their way to the Global March to Gaza. They are part of the thousands of activists who travelled to Egypt's Rafah Border Crossing to the strip on Friday to demand the entry of humanitarian aid. National Coordinator Haroon Orrie was detained along with six others. PAGAD's spokesperson, Cassiem Parker, said: 'The seven went through normal immigration procedure and then were told that they were being detained and might be deported. 'Their luggage was taken from them and was kept in a holding area from 3am to 2pm, Egypt time. 'They were kept with several hundred other people from other countries coming into Cairo. At 2pm, they were told that they could continue but were not given any reason for their detention. 'They have subsequently said there are reports of raids on hotels, etc.' ANC regional spokesperson, Muhammad Khalid Sayed, said they note the information around the PAGAD delegation. 'We want to commend them for embarking on this global march to Gaza. It is in line with the South African stance of solidarity with the people of Palestine. "But we are extremely concerned with the news that has come to us, and we hope that our authorities in Egypt make every effort to assist in having this particular matter resolved.' GOOD Secretary-General Brett Herron said: 'The GOOD Party condemns the detention of members of the South African-based organisation PAGAD by Egyptian authorities, reportedly ahead of their planned participation in the Global March to Gaza. 'The delegation, whose mission was one of solidarity and peace, is now being threatened with deportation. This action is a grave violation of their rights and part of a disturbing pattern of silencing international civil society voices standing up for the people of Gaza. 'At the same time, observers and political figures are being welcomed with open arms on highly curated, one-sided visits to Israel, including MPs from South Africa. 'We cannot ignore the hypocrisy that those attempting to bear witness to suffering and express solidarity with a besieged population are blocked, detained, or deported, while those cosying up to the occupying power face no such barriers."
