Fallen Hamburg Return To Bundesliga After Seven-Year Absence
Fallen German giants Hamburg won automatic promotion to the Bundesliga after a seven-year absence with a 6-1 home thumping of lowly Ulm on Saturday. As the full-time whistle went, fans in the 57,000-strong Volksparkstadion stormed the pitch to celebrate with the players. One of only three German clubs to win the European Cup, the precursor to the Champions League, and a six-time league champion, Hamburg were relegated for the first time in their history in 2018. Coming into the game needing a victory to guarantee promotion, Hamburg fell behind after seven minutes when Ulm's Tom Gaal scored, but hit back three minutes later through Ludovit Reis.
After Ulm missed a 36th-minute penalty, Hamburg calmed their nerves with two quick goals before half-time through Ransford-Yeboah Koenigsdoerffer and Davie Selke.
Ulm conceded an own goal from Philipp Strompf early in the second half before Koenigsdoerffer added another. Daniel Elfadli scored with four minutes remaining to put Hamburg on course for the top flight after 2,555 days.
Despite resources which dwarf many top-flight teams, Hamburg were unable to return to the top division, finishing fourth three times and third twice.
The return was piloted by rookie coach Merlin Polzin, 34, who was born in the city and grew up as a Hamburg fan.
"We've suffered some really tough setbacks as a team, but we've always bounced back," Polzin said before the match.
"That gives me a very, very good feeling and confidence that we can make tonight a very special evening."
The victory took Hamburg one point clear of Cologne atop the Bundesliga 2 table. Cologne, relegated last season, need at least a point in their final match next week to join Hamburg in the top flight.
Also on Saturday, Holstein Kiel and Bochum were confirmed relegated from the top division.
Ulm's defeat seals their relegation to the third tier alongside Jahn Regensburg.

Inter Milan gamble on novice Chivu after end of Inzaghi era
Inter Milan have chosen Cristian Chivu to lead the Serie A club into a new era, confirming the former Romania defender as Simone Inzaghi's replacement ahead of the upcoming Club World Cup. Still reeling from humiliation at the hands of Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League final, Inter have gambled on novice Chivu after failing to get Cesc Fabregas from Como. "Inter Milan is pleased to welcome Cristian Chivu as the new head coach of the first team. The coach has signed a contract with Inter until 30 June 2027," Inter said in a statement. Chivu has agreed a deal with Inter worth a reported 2.5 million euros a season, taking charge of one of Europe's biggest clubs only a few months after beginning his senior coaching career with Parma. Parma confirmed Chivu's departure earlier on Monday, setting up his arrival at Inter where he won three Serie A titles and the 2010 Champions League as a player. Chivu was part of the iconic Inter team which won the treble under Jose Mourinho 15 years ago, a feat which the San Siro club tried and spectacularly failed to repeat this season. In total Chivu played 169 times over six seasons with Inter, and he also knows Serie A well due to the four seasons he spent at rivals Roma before moving north in 2007. The 44-year-old replaced Fabio Pechia in February and guided Parma to Serie A safety in his first job in football of any form since leaving Inter's youth set-up last summer. "I thank the club, staff, players and fans for having believed in me and our project," said Chivu on Instagram. "Together we overcame obstacles and wrote a page which will remain in my heart." Chivu's first match in charge of Inter will be against Monterrey in the Club World Cup next week, in the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California. He will lead a group of players who looked dead on their feet during their 5-0 hammering against PSG in the Champions League final late last month. Inzaghi left Inter in the wake of the Italians' thumping in Munich, taking the job at Saudi Pro League club Al Hilal who are also participating the Club World Cup. He had made light of serious financial problems in turning Inter into one of Europe's best teams in his four seasons at the Milan giants, but his final campaign ended in a bitter fashion and with no trophies. Inter had looked a decent bet for the Serie A, Champions League and Italian Cup treble when they booked a place in the semi-finals of Europe's top club competition by knocking out Bayern Munich. At that point Inter were three points clear at the top of Serie A, but they ended up conceding the Scudetto to Napoli on the final day of the season and were knocked out of the Italian Cup by AC Milan. New Delhi [India], June 9 (ANI): While the official announcement for the inaugural edition of the Shooting League of India has already created a buzz in the country, international athletes are equally excited to witness a new format of the sport emerging from India. Hundreds of talents, including several Olympic medal winners and legends of the sport, have already expressed their interest in the league. USA's Mary Tucker, who won the silver medal at the Tokyo Olympics in mixed 10m air rifle team, explains why she was drawn to apply for the SLI. The 23-year-old has competed earlier for the University of Kentucky and West Virginia University in the NCAA competitions, and played for Saltendorf in the Bundesliga in Germany. She said she enjoys competing in tournaments with team formats. 'There was a lot of draw to go ahead and fill out the form for the Shooting League of India. I really like leagues. I have experience with the NCAA and with the Bundesliga, and I really like being on a team and having that atmosphere of being able to have spectators rooting for an entire team. I also really like the format of having top athletes and junior athletes competing together. I feel like that's a huge opportunity to develop shooting sports both within India and all around the world,' Tucker said as quoted from a press release by SLI. The ISSF has allocated the window between 20th November and 2nd December for the first season of the SLI, and the tournament will feature mixed team events in pistol (10m, 25m), rifle (10m, 50m 3 positions), and shotgun (Trap & Skeet), as decided by the NRAI Technical Committee. 'India is at a really high level in the sport, so it's really a good opportunity for the Indian athletes, I think, to compete with people from outside, but also it's a great opportunity for international athletes because we get to compete with the really high-level Indian shooters. I think it will be a really great opportunity as well to build a kind of fan base and hopefully get some more interest in the whole world,' she further added. Mary also expressed how having an experience of playing for several teams may give her an advantage in the upcoming league, and also delved deeper into the psychological aspects of representing a franchise. 'Those athletes who have shot in the NCAA or in the Bundesliga for many years could have a bit of an advantage because we do know what it's like to compete with the pressure of a team. It's very different, you're competing only for yourself or only for your country, versus if you're competing for a school or a city. Everybody from the city is behind you, and you really want to make them proud. You also have teammates, and you don't want to let them down. You have to learn how to deal with the pressure of that,' the US athlete said. On a personal front, Mary also said that she believes that the league will not only help in growing the popularity of the sport across the USA and other regions, but also help her individual game. 'The opportunity to travel more and train with other high-level athletes is going to help bring my level of shooting up. And there are going to be different types of opportunities and experiences that we will get with this league. It may put you in a situation that is super different or uncomfortable. And that will help a ton because we are going to be able to get used to those situations,' Tucker said. 'Additionally, I think showing the USA that it is possible to have a professional league with athletes from other countries would be a big step. We have teams at the college level but not at the professional level. And to show that the whole world is interested, but also US athletes are doing really well, will create a lot of buzz here, which would be great for us ahead of the 2028 LA Olympics. We will be able to fill up our spectators,' she added. Meanwhile, during her tours, Tucker has spent time with many Indian players and is eager to pair up with a few of them to further elevate her game and learn a few tricks. 'I definitely know a lot of the Indian shooters. I know Elavenil Valarivan very well, and it will be really interesting to see her grow. I think she is going to have a huge following. I also am really good friends with Anjum Moudgil, and I think she brings a lot of sports psychology stuff to it. I am really interested to see how she is going to use the platform to promote the youth and the mental health aspect, which is something that I will jump on if she starts doing that,' Mary signed off. Germany reassesses World Cup prospects after being taught lessons by France and Portugal
BERLIN — Two defeats and last place in a mini-tournament it expected to win have dealt Germany a cold dose of reality ahead of the 2026 World Cup. The Nations League final four in Germany was supposed to show Julian Nagelsmann's team can count itself among Europe's best, but a 2-1 loss to Portugal in Munich followed by a 2-0 defeat to France in Stuttgart instead revealed a gulf in class. It showed that tournament-winner Portugal, beaten finalist Spain – the European champion – and a talent-packed France team are among the favorites with defending champion Argentina to win soccer's biggest prize next year. Nagelsmann was keen to highlight the positives, noting that Germany dominated and created a host of chances in the first half against France on Sunday – but counterpart Didier Deschamps had already said what little importance he gave the third-place decider, and it was clear which side was more motivated in front of the Stuttgart fans. Kylian Mbappé scored before the break and set up Michael Olise for the second goal as Les Bleus shook off their apathy in the second half and might have scored more. 'If you look at the first half, honestly, they were not bothered about winning. But they still won,' Germany captain Joshua Kimmich said. Germany's forwards were simply not as clinical as France's.
