TV Review: NAUTILUS Episode 5, ‘Anguille Fumée'
I found Episode 4 of Nautilus underwhelming, but the team behind this AMC show comes back swinging with its fifth entry. In 'Anguille Fumée,' the show brings out its most tense episode yet in a locked-room horror mystery. This was like watching some of our favorite Star Trek horror episodes, but set in the deep in a submarine. Nautilus, Season 1 Episode 5, 'Anguille Fumée'
With so much of the episode taking place in the submarine itself, I felt we got to see more of the Nautilus crew in this episode. We still don't know any of their backstory, but more screen time with the supporting crew is always enjoyable. Their quirky personalities cut through all the tension.

Elsewhere with the East India Mercantile Company, the stakes rise as captured Nautilus crewmember Jagadish Ghosh (Chum Ehelepola) is in dire straits while being confronted by Captain Billy Millais (Luke Arnold).
The creative team has been dropping hints throughout the show that there's more to Millais than he can let on. And Arnold has been quietly capturing this intrigue in his performance. I am looking forward to seeing where they take his character.

'Anguille Fumée' is spectacularly tense. The ship is in danger; the crew is at their wits' end, and danger is at every step. They're in uncharted waters—literally and figuratively—and trust isn't high. Anything and everything can set off a fuse, and this Nautilus episode plays with that concept while leaning into classic horror imagery and story beats. The Accent Issue
An issue that hasn't cropped up before is the accents. I can't assess the other accents on Nautilus , but several characters speak Hindi, and one character speaks Bengali in this episode—the actors speaking Hindi are very obviously not native to India, because it's heavily-accented.

Nemo actor Shazad Latif is a British actor with Pakistani heritage. Shabana Azeez, who plays Nemo's wife Renouka, and Samara Wheeler, who plays their child Mya, are both Australian. They're playing Indian characters in an era where hardly anyone traveled, they shouldn't have anachronistic accents when speaking their mother tongues.
And the gentleman speaking Bengali—not an Indian character or actor—kudos for trying, but I couldn't understand a single word he said. I had to read the subtitles.

But the accent issue is a negligible problem on Nautilus . The actors are doing their best, possibly in languages they aren't familiar with. I can't fault them. I'm someone who grew up in India, and I speak regional languages with an accent because English is my first language. And I watch way too much TV, which has affected the way I speak. Nemo and Humility
We get a little more of Humility Lucas' (Georgia Flood) backstory. It's nothing we haven't seen and read in a ton of stories about women in the past who tried to break the mold. But for young viewers, they'll find Humility's chaffing and belligerence against a sexist world a mirror to their own fight against the patriarchy.

But an ongoing issue is that the creators of Nautilus are so intent on positioning Humility as the 'underestimated woman with brains' that they keep forgetting Nemo is the brains behind the ship's design. He would, therefore, know something about engineering and science.
Nemo spends far too much time stultified by the science, while Humility is always saving the moment with her scientific knowledge. The story and their connection would be far stronger if they worked together. They can disagree on their methods—which briefly happens in this episode—but they're always at odds, or underestimating each other. Five episodes into Nautilus , their dynamic seems to be standing in place.

If Nemo and Humility spend too much time tearing each other down, the eventual bond that the writers have undoubtedly written for them won't be believable.
But I have faith that the show will right that issue, if by doing nothing else but leaning into the chemistry that Latif and Flood have easily built over five episodes.

This is one of the best episodes of Nautilus yet, but, perhaps because it's so engrossing and enjoyable, the show's issues were amplified.
Nautilus airs every Sunday on AMC and AMC+.

There's No New ‘Friday the 13th' Movie to Announce… Yet
If you had high hopes that the Jason Universe panel at San Diego Comic-Con would address 'the elephant in the room,' as Horror Inc. executive Rob Barsamian called it—well, it did indeed do that. But as of now, there's no concrete news to report about a new Friday the 13th film. Yet. 'After 45 years, we wanted another 45 years,' Barsamian said from the stage, referencing the fact that the original Friday the 13th was released in 1980. 'And we hear you loud and clear. We're doing everything we can to push the envelope and go in a lot of directions…we have a lot coming next. And it's just gonna keep coming and coming and coming. […] I know everyone wants that big elephant in the room, right, and we're going to get there. So we're just going to keep going until we give you what you want.' Later in the panel, Barsamian's son (and fellow Horror Inc. exec) Robbie echoed that sentiment. 'I can tell you that a new sequel movie [and a] new sequel game are at the top of our list. It's where most of our energy is going right now. And I can finally tell you we're in a position to deliver on that. We're not officially announcing with our partners today, [but] both are in the works and coming.' That's an encouraging update for fans who've been patiently waiting for the next Friday the 13th movie while the series untangled its complicated rights issues. But even without movie details to share, the Jason Universe folks still had plenty to announce. Horror Inc. CMO Sheri Conn emphasized the company wants 'to bring everyone's favorite slasher back into the spotlight. We've been working for the last few years really hard behind the scenes to bring new entertainment, gaming, theme park experiences, collectibles, collabs—bring it all back to life.' 'We really hope that you all feel like it's been worth the wait once you see what we've been cooking up,' she continued. 'We're working with partners who are also huge fans of Jason and the franchise, who share our vision of making sure that we honor what was so iconic [about Friday the 13th]…but also will help us expand and evolve our storytelling in lots of different ways.' To that end, panel attendees got a very quick peek at Peacock and A24's Crystal Lake prequel TV show, with a video message from showrunner Brad Caleb Kane. The show is still filming, so there wasn't much footage to show besides some behind-the-scenes shots, but he promised practical effects, gore galore, and a wider lens on Camp Crystal Lake and the surrounding town as well. SDCC attendees also got the first look at the trailer for Sweet Revenge, a 13-minute vignette created by Mike P. Nelson (who also has the Silent Night, Deadly Night remake coming up). Nelson was on the panel and is clearly a huge Friday the 13th nerd, which explains why the tone of this clip feels so perfectly calibrated. Here's the trailer, which went online after the panel: You can get a quick glimpse of Jason's previously revealed new mask in action there. It was designed by Greg Nicotero (The Walking Dead), and yes, it's still a hockey mask, but diehard horror heads might notice subtle differences in this version. The short film will be posted on the Jason Universe YouTube channel starting August 13—which is not a Friday, alas, but has a spooky ring to it anyway. Want more io9 news? Daryl Dixon Season 3: Release date, cast updates and what to expect next
Hey, Walking Dead fans! If you're as pumped as we are about The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon Season 3, you're in for a wild ride. After the heart-pounding finale of Season 2, subtitled The Book of Carol , the show is taking us on a fresh adventure with our favorite crossbow-wielding survivor, Daryl Dixon, and his ride-or-die bestie, Carol Peletier. Let's dive into everything we know so far about the release date, cast updates, and what's coming next in this epic spin-off. Buckle up, because this is gonna be good! Release Date: When Can We Watch Daryl Dixon Season 3? Mark your calendars, because The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon Season 3 is set to premiere on September 7, 2025, on AMC and AMC+ at 9 p.m. ET/PT. This keeps the show's tradition of September releases, following Season 1 in 2023 and Season 2 in 2024. Cast Updates: Who's Joining Daryl and Carol? Norman Reedus is back as the rugged, zombie-slaying Daryl Dixon, and Melissa McBride returns as the badass Carol Peletier. Their chemistry was the heart of Season 2, and we are thrilled they're both leading the charge from the start this time. After logistical issues kept Carol out of Season 1, it's awesome to see her back in full force. But here's where it gets exciting: Season 3 is bringing in some fresh faces, especially since the show's moving to Spain. A big name joining the cast is Stephen Merchant, known for The Office and Logan . The show's also welcoming a talented lineup of Spanish actors as series regulars, reflecting the new setting: Eduardo Noriega ( The Devil's Backbone ) as Antonio Óscar Jaenada ( Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides ) as Fede Alexandra Masangkay ( The Platform ) Plus, we've got recurring roles from up-and-comers like Candela Saitta ( Máxima ) and Hugo Arbués ( Through My Window ). Other new additions include Greta Fernández, Gonzalo Bouza, Hada Nieto, Yassmine Othman, Cuco Usín, Irina Björklund, Armando Buika, Javier Taboada, Boré Buika, Anna Gras, Claudio Bandini, Pedro Bachura, and Elena Sándell. This diverse cast promises a mix of allies, enemies, and maybe a few surprises. Sadly, we're saying goodbye to some familiar faces from the France arc, like Clémence Poésy (Isabelle) and Anne Charrier (Genet), since the story's shifting to Spain. It's bittersweet, but we are excited to meet the new characters shaping Daryl and Carol's journey. What to Expect: A New Adventure in Spain Season 3 is expected to pick up after the emotional and action-packed events of Season 2, where Daryl and Carol fought their way through France. Now, they're on the move again, heading from the Chunnel (that tunnel connecting France to England) to Spain, with a quick stop in London. The official logline teases that they're 'continuing their journey to somehow return home and to the ones they love.' But, as always, the road to home is never easy in The Walking Dead universe. The shift to Spain is a big deal. Showrunner David Zabel and executive producer Steve Squillante have hyped up Spain's unique vibe, from its rich culture to its diverse landscapes. Expect to see Daryl and Carol trekking through places like Madrid, Granada, and Belchite, facing new walkers and human threats. The teaser trailer (check it out on AMC's socials!) shows them navigating rugged terrain, with Daryl hinting at being 'ready to give up' before finding new purpose. The season's 'road show' format keeps things fresh, with Daryl and Carol constantly on the move. This isn't just about surviving walkers; it's about their bond and their desperate hope to get back to the US. Will they finally make it home? Or will Spain throw them some curveballs that complicate their plans? We are betting on the latter, because, you know, it's The Walking Dead . Ahmedabad Plane Crash
