Fishermen Luke Beard and Jason Rosenfeld caught and released a shark Tuesday off the coast of Cape Hatteras on Tuesday.

'The biggest priority is keeping the fish safe and get a good release on all fish that we catch,' Beard said. 'I was about in tears after we released that fish, because it's emotional, yeah, that you never know if you're ever going to be able to do that in your lifetime.'
The fishermen adhered to state law by releasing the shark without removing it from the water, ensuring the animal's safety and compliance with regulations.
'We are extremely passionate about these animals,' Rosenfield said.
According to the fishermen, the shark was estimated to be between 12 and 13 feet long and weighed more than a thousand pounds.

Beard reelected to Ward 3, Nolan secures first term in Ward 5
TUPELO — Voters returned Ward 3 Councilman Travis Beard to office in a low-turnout general election Tuesday night, along with electing freshman Republican Bentley Nolan to replace Ward 5 Councilman Buddy Palmer, to bring Tupelo's municipal election cycle to an end. The final tallies for the All-American City's municipal elections resolved quickly with two decisive victories, closing an election cycle that began in January and ended with a single new face on the council. Beard, a Republican who just secured his third full-term in office, defeated his Democrat opponent Shirley Hendrix, owner of R&B Specialty Printing, by garnering 192 votes (68%) to Hendrix's 139 votes (32%). Nolan, who manages Nolan Brothers Motor Sales, defeated Democrat Candria Lewis. Nolan received 292 votes (88%) to Lewis' 39 votes (10%). He will replace Palmer, who is retiring, on July 1 when all candidates will be sworn in. There were four write-in votes. Nolan previously defeated two candidates in the April 1 primary and April 23 runoff election to secure his seat as the Republican nominee. Beard and Nolan join the other candidates who either won in the primary election or ran unopposed. They include Republican Ward 1 Councilman Chad Mims, Republican Ward 2 Councilman Lynn Bryan, Democrat Ward 4 Councilwoman Nettie Davis, Republican Ward 6 Councilwoman Janet Gaston, Democrat Ward 7 Councilwoman Rosie Jones and Republican Mayor Todd Jordan. Mims and Gaston ran unopposed, while Bryan, Davis, Jones and Jordan had no opponents from opposing parties, leading to victories during the April 1 primary election.

Test-Driving The 2025 Mazda CX-80: Is It Dog Friendly?
Mazda CX-80 and dogs The Mazda CX-80 is the brand's largest model in the UK, and buyers can choose from a PHEV or a 3.3-litre diesel, like the one tested here. However, before we proceed, note that this review is aimed at dog owners. If you seek an in-depth Mazda CX-80 review, check out this link. Up first is two-year-old 27kg Shepkita, Chloe. My wife and I rescued this precious soul when she was just eight months old. She came from a bad background and fears sudden movements, loud noises and vans. She's incredibly cheeky, alarmingly chomps through snacks and enjoys the odd TV remote. Similarly, she adores other dogs and is slowly learning that not everyone is bad. Dog two is two-year-old 20kg Siberian Husky, Freya. Like her sister, Freya was adopted from a shelter. We don't know much about her past, but like most huskies, she enjoys arguing. Chloe and Freya She's deeply affectionate towards humans and screams when she spots other dogs. She's also a sucker for carrots, loves being carried around and enjoys intensely staring at people with her blue eyes. Both dogs enjoy walkies and cuddles, but did they like the Mazda CX-80? Popping the electronic boot lid reveals a large load area complete with cupholders, air conditioning vents, and USB-C ports, although your doggo probably won't use the latter, but please send me a video if they do. Pulling each tab on both seat backs folds the third row flat; you'd struggle to fit a Chihuahua in the boot with these in place, but with them folded, boot space rises from 258 litres to 566 litres. Sliding the second-row forward, and this grows to 687 litres. Mazda CX-80 rear vent We humans need a break from being dog staff, but my wife and I can't go on holiday without knowing our girls are being properly cared for, and this meant visiting a local kennel to induct both dogs for a test day. Luckily, both fitted comfortably in the Mazda's boot with room to spare, but remember this is a seven-seat family hauler, and if you own horse-sized dogs, you're better off with a Land Rover Discovery. Mazda CX-80 boot with dog Land Rover also offers a ramp accessory to assist dogs in getting in and out of the boot, something Mazda doesn't provide, but we had no issues getting our dogs over the CX-80's short bumper and onto its flat boot floor. Our biggest issue was the sensor under the rear bumper, which operates the electronic boot lid. When attempting to load or unload our doggos, the lid would often automatically close because we'd accidentally triggered the zealous sensor, resulting in us shouting for help in the middle of a busy town while being slowly engulfed by the Mazda. Second-row riders should be more than comfortable. Our Husky, Freya, enjoys riding in the back seat, meaning our Shepkita, Chloe, could sprawl across the Mazda's vast boot floor. The seats were comfortable, and both dogs could be secured via the CX-80's boot harness points or second-row Isofix points. Mazda CX-80 rear seats In some cars, Freya has accidentally turned on the rear heated seats via her paw or nose. We've also found her gasping for air because she's nudged the temperature button, resulting in Sahara winds. However, disabling the rear climate control panel in the Mazda is easily achieved via a button up front. The Kia Sorento and Skoda Kodiaq has over 800 litres of boot storage, but only the Sorento comes with a third-row cooling vent. Medium to large dogs shouldn't have access issues thanks to the Mazda CX-80's high boot floor, low bumper and large boot lid. Likewise, the rear doors open at 90 degrees, meaning dogs who enjoy being in the second row shouldn't have any access woes. And, if your dogs are overzealous with climbing in and out, you can buy Mazda's optional trunk liner or boot mat with rear bumper protection. The CX-80 is one of the best dog-friendly cars I've tested, and despite our loaner being a diesel, the cabin remained quiet during modest acceleration (I recorded 66dB at 70mph). The Mazda CX-80 is priced from £49,780 ($67,314).

Falkville double homicide suspect found competent to stand trial
May 30—A man charged in a 2023 double homicide in Falkville was ruled mentally competent to stand trial Wednesday in a Morgan County courtroom, though a trial date has not been set. Joshua Lamar Knighten, 38, appeared in Morgan County Circuit Judge Charles Elliott's courtroom with his attorneys James Burney and Brian White. He is charged with two counts of capital murder and one count of attempted murder. Elliott in August had issued an order for Knighten to have a mental exam at the request of the defendant. At Knighten's preliminary hearing in 2023, Morgan County sheriff's Investigator Caleb Brooks testified that during a forensic interview Knighten admitted he had not been able to afford his prescribed medication and reported that he "heard voices in his head." Knighten has been incarcerated in the Morgan County Jail without bond since his Feb. 5, 2023, arrest. On that date, deputies responded to a 911 call at a Falkville residence located at 53 SE Goodwin Road. When they arrived, they found Knighten lying on the ground and telling them he "did not mean to." "How many lives did I end tonight?" Knighten asked Morgan County sheriff's Cpl. Jacob Raburn as he was placed in a patrol vehicle, according to an affidavit by Brooks. Deputies found the body of Mitchell Ray Beard, 62, of Falkville, who Knighten had shot multiple times while Beard was inside his vehicle, according to the Morgan County Sheriff's Office. He was identified as 36-year-old Marcus Ken Reed, Beard's stepson. The Sheriff's Office said Reed was transported to Huntsville Hospital but died from his wounds two days later. Knighten also allegedly shot Sarah Conley, who left the scene before deputies arrived. She later showed up at the Falkville Police Department with several gunshot wounds. Investigators recovered a 9mm Glock-19 on the driveway and a Springfield XDM Elite 9mm pistol inside Knighten's residence. Both firearms have been listed by the Sheriff's Office as the murder weapons. According to the affidavit, Knighten made a 911 call and told dispatchers if no one at the residence would tell him who had been stealing from his uncle, "that they was ready to die." Two other people may have been present at the scene of the shootings. Harald Hommers, a Georgia resident, said shortly after the shooting that Reed's fiancée and her young daughter were also there during the incident. "My daughter and my granddaughter were luckily able to take cover and not be shot, but (the suspect) was shooting actively at them," Hommers said at the time. Authorities have not provided details about these other individuals, but Morgan County sheriff's spokesman Mike Swafford said other people were present. Knighten pleaded not guilty to all charges on Feb. 6, 2023. — or 256-340-2442.
